Wool Quilt in MN

Mary Chalmers's Wool Quilt

Well we have our first day in, in St. Cloud MN.  I did not get to see all of the quilts yet, but in the room were are in this was my favorite.  It is all wool.  It looks like mostly recycled wools from clothing scraps.  The quilt was embroidered heavily with perle cottons.  Great Job Mary!   She states she got the inspiration from a quilt in a magazine from 1988.  She later was in our booth buying hand dyed perle cottons…What do you think she is going to do with those now????  Below is a close up of the quilt.  As we were going to dinner tonight there were tornado warnings…then came the rain.   We managed to stay pretty dry.  I had almond crusted walleye at the White Horse Inn downtown.  It was to die for and I almost ate the whole thing…we are sewing now and the sun is shining with a fat rainbow forming outside our 5th story hotel room…all for now…LB

Lisa I believe I could stand and look at this quilt all day – simply gorgeous. When making a large wool quilt like this what do you suggest backing with with? batting? I am almost through with your Folk Art Album that I bought at Houston several years ago but have no idea what to use for the backing and batting. blessings, marlene

Wow!…Ok Lisa …I guess we are all expecting you to work your magic and design!
Just looking at it makes me want to run home and dig through the wool scraps and sew.
However, since the talent of design is not in me I will have to wait for you to create.
Enjoy the show and don’t work too hard.

That wool quilt is by far one of my favorites that
Mom has made over the years. It is warm, heavy – I do so like heavy, and incredibly beautiful. We had it laid out on the dining room table and tried a few things with it. We took a double mirror and put it next to one of the blocks and produced a reflection of the block 4 times – there is a Huge potential for doing this quilt over – Each block created a totally different feel and look. Mom has already said she won’t be doing that – however, that would be an easy way to get started on a wool quilt of your own.

I saw this at the show. This is a great piece of work and would have been worthy of Best of Show in my eyes. (Except, of course, it is not quilted.) The overall workmanship was excellent. I appreciate the oppotunity to see it in person.
