Day 1…Needful things for Quilters

12 Days of Christmas 1

I have had many requests to offer this specialย during the 12 days so here it isโ€ฆ..by popular demand

Day 1 Juki Sewing Machineย th

Now I know we pretty much all have a sewing machineโ€ฆor two or three or even moreโ€ฆBut I just have to talk about the sewing machine I use 99% of the timeโ€ฆIt is my #1 Needful thingโ€ฆMost of you probably have never heard of Jukiโ€ฆso let me just say they are not new to the marketโ€ฆJuki is well known in the garment industry and are mostly industrial machines. ย I think I have had a Juki for about 9 years nowโ€ฆI also own 2 Berninas, 1060 and a 1530, and a couple of featherweightsโ€ฆone black and one white. I confess this to you so you also know what I am comparing to and you all know I teach all across the country and have stitched on many machines.

I bought the Juki with the intention to use it as a second machine to have set up for machine quilting my little quilts, and also so I didnโ€™t have to change the walking foot from my regular foot on my Berninaโ€ฆthat would have been nice, right?โ€ฆJuki has entered the quilt world with a semi-industrial machine for quilters. ย Here are a few of the features that the Juki machines haveโ€ฆall metalโ€ฆno plastic bobbins, no plastic feet, ย comes with all sorts of feet including 2 free motion feet and a walking foot, a larger 9โ€ณ opening between the body and the arm, so machine quilting would be easier to handle. ย It has a nice extension table, this is nice for retreats, I have it embedded in my table usually. ย The machine ONLY stitches straight. ย Now this might be an issue for some, but I was only going to use this for machine quiltingโ€ฆThe fact that it only stitches straight is actually a plusโ€ฆnice tension all the time, single hole throat plate . ย It holds large cones as well as regular threadโ€ฆIt has an automatic thread cutter, automatic needle threader , knee lift and stitches 1500 stitches per minute or something like that, in other words it is FAST.

After stitching on this machine and using it. ย I did not want to stitch on anything else. ย It โ€œpiecesโ€ beautifullyโ€ฆI didnโ€™t have to hang on to my threads at the start, the feed dogs are nice and close together and ย fed my little pieces in nicely. ย Having the single hole meant my piecing wasnโ€™t sucked down into that oblong holeโ€ฆ and againโ€ฆI could stitch, cut my thread with my foot(or there is a button, but I like my hands free to hold on to my patches) knee lift my presser foot and be on to the next thingโ€ฆI especially love piecing triangle paper on the Juki for all the reasons I just statedโ€ฆNow I know being fast really should not be an issue, right? We want to be accurate! ย But let me tell you, if I am stitching strips, borders or you name itโ€ฆfast is handyโ€ฆI tried going back to my โ€œregularโ€ machine to piece onโ€ฆit was almost painful!!! Just shoot meโ€ฆI loan this machine at The Gathering, but it comes with a warningโ€ฆif you stitch with it you WILL be going home with it! ย I think only one person didnโ€™t buy one after she stitched on it for a weekendโ€ฆlolโ€ฆThey also have updated the Juki recentlyโ€ฆI have a TL98Q, now they make a TL2010 Q1, they have updated to an LED lightโ€ฆthey have added a Turtle and a Hare button, if you want to control how fast it can goโ€ฆand they changed the foot pedal, a bitโ€ฆI love my 98 and the features they added do not make a difference to meโ€ฆso I am keeping my 98.

Here is the only con to my Jukiโ€ฆit is heavyโ€ฆbut it is all metal! ย You canโ€™t have metal parts and it be light!โ€ฆI think of it like todayโ€™s featherweight-but it is not light. ย Anyone can work on a Jukiโ€ฆit is a basic machine, it has no computerโ€ฆit just needs to be oiled and used and it is happy!

So if you are ever in the market for a machine, please check out the Jukiโ€™s and you can read all the technical words I should have used to explain it. ย They now have a presence at the larger quilt shows and will soon come out with a long arm, that will be most reasonably priced. ย I do sell the Juki 2010Q1 at my storeโ€ฆI could sell other machines but remember what I said, I only sell what I useโ€ฆtherefore I sell the Jukiโ€™s. ย I am placing the Juki 2010Qi on sale now until the end of the year at a special of $899-(yesโ€ฆnot a typo) including shipping. ย This is a great deal. ย We will order more for this same price as long as you order before the end of the year. ย JUKIย ย  ย In 2014 they will go back to $999.00 still a great price when you think about what you all get with this machine! ย Please allow a few weeks for deliveryโ€ฆwe will not charge your card until we are shipping it.

If you purchased a Juki from last years 12 daysโ€ฆPLEASE write a comment about it! ย I will also pick more winners from the comments on this postโ€ฆso please comment you have a good chance at winning something!

With my new studio almost completeโ€ฆ2014 will be an exciting yearโ€ฆ.videos, stitch-a-longs and more great projects from Primitive Gatherings…

The winner from yesterday is:ย Susan JDecember 23, 2013 at 11:22 pm

I think this is a great tool-quick and fool-proof with the the chart and guide-wish I couldโ€™ve been at the party!

I absolutely love my Juki. Mine is 9 years old, and I would not be without it. Not only do I use it for quilting/sewing, but I have mended heavy horse blankets, bell boots (horse), boat covers, you name it, and it never skips a beat. Amazing. Just last weekend I repaired one of my leather boots with it! I also own 2 Berninas and a featherweight, so I know exactly what you’re talking about Lisa! Merry Christmas!!

I would love a workhorse…so many times my machine can’t handle what I am sewing. My biggest gripe is how I have to hold my threads when I start. Must try out this machine!

  7. Karen in breezy point Avatar

I purchased the Juki after reading Lisa’s review last year. I love it so much, that my Bernina stays packed up for retreats and the Juki gets used every day for piecing and small project quilting. You will not regret getting your hands on this machine-it is awesome

I love the Juki, it’s a workhorse and so easy. You just sit and sew, so you sew more. And it simply does not break. No error messages or surprises, so no unexpected downtime just when you want to finish a project. And, it’s a fine looking machine.

I have several machines. my DIL was getting into quiltig and had a very inexpensive machine. she was becoming frustrated. so being the good MIL, i gave her my juki…… oh how i miss that machine! But my DIL is going great guns on quilting and doing a fantastic job! AND is no longer frustrated, unless she has to rip something out! LOL… But truly, This juki machine is a dream……

I also bought my Juki for machine quilting but love it for piecing especially for half square triangles! Even with a “leader” my other machines suck the ends into the hole but the Juki is amazing. I find myself using it the most ! I have a Pfaff and a Featherweight too. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a friend that got a Juki 15 years ago and her goal was to see how fast it could go. She could finish string piecing a quilt almost before we started! What a temptation! I replaced a machine I had for 22 yrs a couple years ago from a local quilt shop. Will not name the brand but so not liking it. Not a workhorse and even when piecing my quilts it does not like to go over the pieced seams. Can be very frustrating…… I wish I had known about the Juki at the time I was replacing (priced the same). I’m already thinking of replacing a 2 yr old machine and I think you have SOLD me on Juki. Thanks much for all the needfuls. I keep a list of the items I want and why you suggest.

This is another one of those products I would never have known about if you had not shown it on your 12 Days of Needful Quilty stuffs… when you consider the prices of the more popular (quilt shop) brands of machines… this $899 for a solid metal workhorse is very reasonable… when my old machine breaks, I’ll definitely be purchasing one of these…

Thank you for all your time and knowledge that you put into these 12 Days postings… as well as all the teaching and sharing you do throughout the year! You keep designing… and we’ll keep stitching! ๐Ÿ™‚ A very Merry Christmas to you, your family and everyone at Primitive Gatherings!

  53. Sorchagirl Avatar

The Juki sounds like a good machine for those little quilts. I’ve avoided sewing any piece much smaller than the 2 1/2 inch since I find it difficult to keep the fabric aligned and the large space for quilts to the right of the needle would definitely be a plus! Thanks for all the great ‘needful’ things posts. I enjoy the projects. Merry Christmas, Lisa.

Wow – “IF ONLY” — the JUKI — sounds wonderful — don’t recall seeing one when at the Gathering; but then

After reading your Juki description, I’d love one. It sounds great for a “simpler” quilter like myself. I have a good basic (computerized) 12-yr. old Bernina which works fine for me, so I can’t treat myself to a new machine. Maybe some day :). Thanks for all the good information every day.

Lisa, I just had 4 men from the Juki corporation in my sewing room a couple of weeks ago asking questions about my experience with my sit-down quilting machine (HQ Sweet 16). I sense another product coming down the line. : )
You’ve done a great job selling me on the Juki you use, but I don’t think I could talk DH into another machine, since I have purchased 2 in the last 2 years. I will definitely keep this in mind for the future.

I would love a JUKI, I have a 20+ year old Bernine 1090 and it is still stitching along. I hope that I am the winner, but if not, I will have to start saving up! Lots of plans to make charity quilts and Soldier quilts in 2014, as well as for family and friends. ๐Ÿ™‚
Enjoy your family this Christmas. Happy New Year!

I have had a Juli 98 for a few years and I LOVE it. I’ve considered upgrading because the needle threader would help (as I get older it gets harder to thread my needles) and the speed control might be nice, but I am very happy with the stitch quality and the speed of mine. zoom!

I would definitely consider a Juki for my next machine. I like the fact that it’s not computerized.. I have a Viking Quilt Designer 2 from 2004 – it’s been great, but I worry that it will (or already has) become obsolete – It uses stitch cards and I don’t know if I could find replacement cards.

I bought this machine at your store a month ago…it has changed quilting for me! I have a babylock quilters choice, and I always quilt my own quilts. Having so much more space to quilt made me able to quilt a quilt in HALF the normal time.
The instruction book is in the process of being laminated, all threading, tension, quilting feet, diagrams are top notch. I have never understood, or cared, to figure out tension. On this machine it is so basic and idiot proof, that I’m doing fine!
Thank you for the wonderful machine, the encouragement and ideas.
    Merry Christmas Eve!

I bought a Juki from Lisa in August this year – the TL- 2010Q. I love it because it is fast and I love not having to hold the threads when I start sewing Also love the auto thread cutter. Has been great for sewing on my binding onto my quilt without a problem. Can’t carry to class because of the weight but I have a small one for this.
Thanks Lisa for recommending this machine.

I got my Juki from a quilting friend who just wasn’t going to machine quilt anymore after only making a small project. Okay FAST doesn’t describe how this baby goes when you machine quilt! It is lightning. I did have a few tension issues with my bobbin loosening up, but a little nail polish on the screw took care of that and I am back to happy and quick sewing. I still have it set up for machine quilting, but I agree with you. Piecing would be SO much faster on this than on my Janome. The Janome runs like a snail compared to this, even though i love it too. If anyone is on the fence, this is the machine you get when you quilt and piece a lot. I always worried I was working my Janome too hard. This one I KNOW I am not. You can feel the power and the sturdiness. It is heavy, but that is why it has its own little special place in my sewing room. My recommendation is to buy one!

I have it ready for not only piecing but any heavy duty sewing…made repairs to a tent last year! I also own two Berninas, three featherweights and a few OLD Singers. Well I am one of those who bought the Juki from you last year at Christmastime and I can’t say enough good about this machine. It is absolutely my favorite machine besides my featherweight! It pieces over bulky seams like butter and never moves a bit as it does! I just simply don’t know how I lived without this machine for so long. I have since sold my other high end machine because I just don’t use all the stitches that come on it anyway. The Juki, in my opinion, is the perfect piecer machine for any quilter. Wow, not holding the thread at the start or having the fabric pulled down sounds like a dream. Think I might just have to drop a few heavy “hints” and add this to my wish list. Thanks for the info and would love to read 12 needful months of the year.

I have a Bernina 820 and an older Bernina QE. I use the QE for retreats and at the lake. I wish I could sell the 820 and buy one of these!!

I did it! I am so excited! My hubby was so sweet. He says I am hard to buy for so this was perfect! Lisa, he was so impressed by the write up. I read it out loud to him! Good job. It’s very easy to promote something you believe in! We also only sell what we truly believe in and that’s how we’ve stayed in business all these years! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and I loved the 12 days of Christmas. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Thanks for the description of the Juki. Sounds like it has everything I would want in a sewing machine, especially if I want to do my own quilting. I have an old Bernina and the throat is pretty small–makes it a challenge to quilt.

Thanks for the 12 days of needful things. I’ve learned about some new things that I will need to acquire.

I bought the Juki last year when you had them on sale and I do like this machine. It is fast, accurate and I love the foot thread cutter. The needle threader is a little tricky. I keep my older Bernina off to the side for the occasional task that needs it, but have found this is a couple times a year usage. I would buy one again.

This was one of those gifts I wanted once I read Lisa’s recommendation. It was a Christmas add-on that I had to have. It is a wonderful machine!!! I love it. It is my go to machine before my three berninas and 3 featherweights.
    A must have.

I bought a Juki last year during your 12 days of Christmas. I absolutely LOVE it!!!!
I cant imagine what I did without it. I love sewing on it. The needle threader and thread cutter
are amazing. I actually think I use less thread with it. If you don’t have one of these machines
you must get one. You will not go back to your old machine.
