We are almost done!!! Today’s needful thing is also essential for any wool appliquรฉ! ย Chenille needlesโฆnow why do we need chenille needles?โฆI use the #24 for my Valdani #12 wt. threads for hand stitching my embroidery stitchesโฆit has a sharp point, it is fine and strong with a big eye for threading the perle cottonโฆThe #24 is littleโฆit will not shred your woolโฆand you can control it to make tiny stitches too! ย You will not be disappointed in this needleโฆbut what about the #22? ย I use the #22 with anything thicker than a #12 perleโฆso #8, #5 โฆWhen making larger stitches…I also might use a #22 when I double the #12 thread and/or when I am making colonial knots! ย Do you know about a colonial knot? ย I never make French knots everโฆI am sure there are a few of you out there who have learned this knot from meโฆit is the best isn’t it!!! ย So for the special on our Primitive Gathering needles I am offering a combo at a nice priceโฆso its like getting more than one pack free! ย 3 of each size needle for $12.00!!! I never put these on sale because they more than a little labor intensive! ย So stock up woolly ladies!
I love your needles!! Was using a different one, same size though; but they were longer and yours are just nicer. Actually working on wool today while the ice is gathering outside.
Do not know what a colonial knot is. Would like to though. Think I will go google it now.
I do love your needle packets. My problem with needles is once I remove it from a package, I don’t remember which size it is. These needles are easy to tell which are which. Lisa, I wanted to tell you that I have finally finished the sheep ornament from last year’s christmas blog hop. When I pulled it out this year all it needed was to blanket stitch the edges and now it is on the tree. I love all the wool ornies I have made from your patterns on my tree.
If you work with wool and the specialty threads these needles are a MUST!! I often give them as gifts to my wooly friends–I can’t get enough of these needles–!!!
I saw those last year at the Chicago quilt show and would love to own some. Not only do I think that they would help on my wool projects but the packages/holders are just beautiful!
These are great needles to have! I had bought a few sets of these and sent them along to fellow stitchers during the year… with a sale price, it’s time to stock up again! Thanks! ๐
You’re right Lisa, these needles are fabulous. I recommend them to all my quilting friends. Love the colonial knot too , and yes you taught me… Thank you!
Lisa, you are my life line, what a gift you are! The needles look great as failing eye sight don’t do too good with size 12 quilting needles. Your displays have been interesting and looking forward to two more days. I will miss your daily visits Your party looked like FUN, Santa’s lap, and the Elfs new outfit. Lol, Joan
Love those applique needles and you certainly can never have enough. Merry Christmas to you and all your family and staff. The party pictures were really fun to see.
There is nothing so satisfying & relaxing as hand appliquรฉ. That is one of my favorite things to do on a Sunday afternoon; sitting outside in Southern California. It’s a quiet, reflective time before another Monday rolls around. Thanks for explaining the differences between the needle sizes!
Thanks for listing which needle you use for what. I am addicted to wool applique and am going to copy your post so I can place it with my wool applique projects to use as a reference. Love all your useful tips.
Merry Christmas to you and your staff.
Funny…I was just finishing up (in the nick of time – haha) Old St. Nick and thinking of how I love those needles! Use them all the time, and like to have plenty of spares on hand.
Good to hear about this needle. It ‘s so important to have the best needle so we have lovely stitches. Thanks for the reminder to use the colonial knot. I had forgotten to use that stitch.
OHH! I need needles to start my snow man kit I got from you at the Houston, Thank you for the list of needful things – some of them I didnt know about so I’m anxious to try. Have some fun holidays. Pat
I bought your 24 needles when I took a class with you but didnt try the 22. Will have to do that since I need to use some #8 Valdani. Merry Christmas and thanks again for the great tips.
I really appreciate all of your tips. As a fairly new quilter, I love how you are so willing to share your expertise with us newbies. I will definitely be adding these to my wish list. Thank you.
I love hand sewing needles! I do hand applique but have never worked with wool–I’d like to. Your information about needles is invaluable–with the correct needle, hand stitching is so enjoyable.
Thank you so much for the wonderful information and tips for using the correct needle for each purpose. I am sure to order some if I am not lucky enough to win some. Merry Christmas to all at Primitive Gatherings and those who love the wooly world!
Thank you, thank you for the wonderful information about the proper needle to use for our applique. I surely need these needles to finish my SBOW stitches! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Since we are already ahead of the record for snow here in Wisconsin, I think we should all stock up on these needles for all the projects we will be doing when staying inside!!! Thanks, Lisa, for the lesson in needle sizes.
These needles are the best! I used them for all of my Summer blocks of the month and they were perfect. They glide like butter and are great for wool applique. Love them!
Since taking a class from you last spring these are the only needles I use. I love them. Thanks for all the tips so far. Have a great week with your family.
These needles sizes are hard to find! Thanks for offering such a great and useful product! Merry Christmas to All the Primitive Gathering staff! And of course, you and Nick!
Love your chenille needles-they are all i’ve used since taking a wool class from you years ago- can’t imagine working w/wool without them. Sorry about Wisconsin volleyball’s loss last night-I was pulling for them.
I have never used your needles. I love the way that they are packaged. I have really enjoyed the Days of Christmas. It is fun to see what the next day brings. Thank you and Merry Christmas
I love your chenille needles, I used them to do some utility quilting on a piece with perle 8 cotton. I guess you probably call it big stitch. I’m also using them to hand quilt a frosty mugs table runner.
Thanks for all the great information on the products you are featuring.
I can never have enough of these needles. I am always leaving them in something. I love them they work wonderfully. thanks for the pictures of your party. Looks like you had a lot of fun!!!!
I can’t wait each day to see what you have in store for us, and got so excited to see the needles. I first purchased these needles at the Houston Quilt show a couple of years back along with my first wool applique project and love them and have feel in love with wool applique. I have added them to my must haves!!! Thanks!!!
Thanks for much for the great information and price on the needles. I have always found needle size and type really confusing and I’m never sure I have the correct one. Thanks also, for these great deals!!! Waiting until the end to order everything at once. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
I learned the colonial knot a hundred years ago, when candle wicking was popular. French knots are impossible to execute without a little loop left behind. Good on ya for launching the crusade for colonial knots.
They are good needles. Lisa turned me on to these! No, southpaw, it’s not just that. I have bent needles too.
I need to know if I’m waiting too long to order? I was waiting until the 12 needful things is finished so I could place my order or have I messed this up?
I always knew there must be a science to needles…I have mostly used the ‘eye ball method’ –just kinda looking at what might work… I’m anxious to get some and try. Thanks for the lesson…oh and Merry Christmas from the U.P.
Love your needles and all of your stitching tips. They all have been very helpful through out the years. Thanks for sharing Lisa, it is very appreciated!
I agree. These needles are great. I keep several sewing kits ready to go with different needles. Just have to grab it with the current take-a-long project.
I was introduced to those needles in a class you taught – they are wonderful. I could use some new ones!!
Also, love the colonial knot so much easier than a French knot.
I purchased your needles at one of the AQS shows in Des Moines several years ago. Love them!!!!!!!!! I’m going to have to google a colonial stitch. Come to Iowa and I will talk your wool class to learn straight from the horese’s mouth. Thanks for the giveaway!!!!!
I love using your needles. I have never tried the colonial knot. I will have to look this up. Thank you for all the information you’ve given everyone so far. Hope I win some needles! Tina
I love your needles, they work so well. Times running out and I don’t think I am going to win any goodies, but have really enjoyed reading about your faves. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.
Lisa – thanks for the info! I’ve been working on wool stuff for less than a year and just using whatever needle that I could get the thread threw or whatever I had on hand. Adding the needles to my shopping cart!! On a side note to the lady that commented on forgetting which needle she was using after she took it out of the package – I use one of those small red pin cushions – tomato or strawberry thing – and mark a section with the needle type and size. I place the needle there after use to keep track of it. Also have done this with my machine needles when I have had to change back and forth between jean, metallic, quilting needles, etc for projects. Enjoying your “Needful Things”. Going to look up the Colonial Knot – working on some projects with lots of French Knots.
I live in area that has little to offer in the wool dept. so anything I have learned is from you… so thanks for the info regarding needles. I will be stocking up! I really don’t know when to use the different sizes of threads unless the pattern tells me to.. at least now I will know which needle to use!
I never thought of which type of needle to use for wool applique and I have a kit ready to go…thanks for the information and the chance! Merry Christmas
I really do love using these needles. Guess I will take advantage of the sale and stock up for the new year. This will give me enough to share with a friend, too.
Love wool applique! I just finished a little wool applique project for a gift before I sat down to read your blog. One of the #24 needles would have been great. Will have to get some. I thought I’d go blind threading the embroidery needle that I was using. Love your blog and all the helpful hints that you give all us of who follow you.
Love your needles. They are the perfect length. I just finished making my 2nd stocking from the pattern in your Primitive Christmas book. It turned out awesome. I need to make one more before Christmas Eve.
Thank you for recommending the correct size needle for different applications. I love applique and working with wool. I’ll be adding your needles to my end of year needful things order. Merry Christmas!

Two magnets are attached inside my thread case…one says big one says little! The paper holder is taped to the inside of the cover until gone…then I replace! Thank you!
You can never have enough needles and these are super for stocking stuffing!!
P.S. The best advice that you have told us about is the Magic Sizing~ I always have an Extra Can and I found the handle like the one you have and it works perfect!
Happy Holidays To All At The Primitive Gatherings!
I love these needles! I pick them up every time I see you at a show. They are awesome for all of my wool embroidery! This combo pak is a great idea!
Merry Christmas to everyone at Primitive Gatherings thanks for all of your hard work and great service!
These needles are the BEST when doing wool applique! Thank you for having them and for always giving us explanations of when to use the different sizes!
Always good to hear of a needle that can help us get good stitches.. also nice to be reminded about the colonial knot. I had forgotten about that stitch. Merry Christmas
Thank you for the description of what size needle you use with what thread. I will have to check my one and only pack of your needles and then order more!!!!
Love these needles and love the sizing tip, purchased several cans last night so I could get started this morning . Do I use my steam as I normally would when pressing my fabrics or dry iron to dry the sizing? Or does it matter?
