Moda Blockheads 5 – Block Release #12 “Starling” by Heather Briggs

Hey Blockheads! A little birdie just reminded me that it’s already Wednesday, which means it’s also time for the next MBH5 block release! New to the Blockheads series, this week we welcome Heather Briggs of My Sew Quilty Life with her block contribution, “Starling.” While Heather admits that star blocks aren’t something she sews often, she was happy to embrace a creative change of pace from her usual style, which often tends to be what she describes as whimsical and floral. “Starling” does indeed take a step outside of the creative box by combining a common floral block with a traditional star, to get an interesting and unique looking block. When looking at it, Heather sees “the best of both worlds” because if you reverse the fabric placement from the initial pattern, the block goes from a star to a flower and gives it a totally different look. Cool!

If you’re especially taken with “Starling,” Heather has a little bonus treat for you! In addition to her block pattern, she decided to take it a step further and turn “Starling” into an adorable flower quilt she’s calling, “Starling Petals.” All you need to do to make “Starling Petals” is download the “Starling” block and stem instructions from her blog by clicking the button below! Feeling extra ambitious? You can also turn the blocks into a smaller project like a table runner, mini quilt, or pillow. The sky’s the limit!!!

In case you’re wondering, for my MBH5 blocks I’m using Bella Solid Silver (9900 183) for the background of my quilt, and Bella Solid American Blue (9900 174) consistently throughout the entire thing. For any additional colors I’m using a combination of the soft, muted collection of Bella Solids that we put together for this project called “Sundown,” along with a new playful and vibrant Bella Solids collection called “Cozy.” Both collections are available for purchase on our website by clicking the buttons below!

For those of you looking for a new project but have yet to join in on the MBH5 fun, I really encourage you to jump on this quilty bandwagon! There’s no better way to find inspiration, work on your quilting skills, and get to know a bunch of designers all in one place! Not to mention, working along side others in a similar boat not only helps to keep you on track, but also gives you an entire support group of other people tackling the same project that you are! Plus, it’s FREE to join. How can you go wrong!?

Anyway, I hope you’ll join me again tomorrow LIVE at 1:00 p.m. CTS on my STITCH with Lisa Bongean YouTube channel for another crazy hour of quilt-talk and shenanigans. Aside from our normal announcements, updates, and chit-chat, I thought it would be nice to officially welcome in the spring season with – not only the 6″ of new snow we’re supposed to get over the next couple of days – but also with a trunk show featuring some of my favorite “springy” antique quilts in my collection. Mother Nature can do her best to snow on our parade, but she’ll be no match for the glory of spring color and cheer radiating from these beautiful quilts. Don’t miss it! You can tune in by clicking the STITCH button below. See you tomorrow!!! ~Lisa
