Ever find yourself staring at your pile of leftover fabric scraps, wondering if they’re destined for the trash or something way cooler? Here’s your chance to finally turn those bits and pieces into pure quilt show gold! The 2025 Primitive Gatherings Scrappy Quilt Show is coming up soon and while the deadline is fast approaching, there’s still a couple of months for you to get your quilt finished in time for the show — or started, for that matter!
As you know, if there’s one thing I’m all about it’s paying homage to the way quilts were made back in the good old days, before all the fancy and magical tools of today came along! I love to honor old traditions by putting my own modern spin on designs from years past because I feel like it keeps the history alive in a way that’s fresh, inspiring, and uniquely mine. After all, good design is like a well-loved quilt or a good bottle of wine — it only gets better with time!
My appreciation for tradition is exactly why I chose scrappy as this year’s PG Quilt Show theme. Scrappy quilting embodies the heart of what makes the art form so special — resourcefulness, creativity, and the joy of making something beautiful out of used items that you already have around you. It’s a respectful nod to the quilters before us who turned every leftover scrap into something purposeful, and a reminder that sometimes, the best designs are inspired by what would otherwise become landfill.
Have you sent in your quilt yet? Consider this your friendly reminder! The deadline to enter your quilt in the 2025 Primitive Gatherings Scrappy Quilt Show is October 31st, 2025! Still on the fence about entering because you think your scraps aren’t quite “show-worthy”? Trust me, scrappy quilts are all about personality and creativity, not perfection. Whether you’re tossing together a wild mix or carefully placing every patch, this is your chance to celebrate those little fabric rebels that don’t fit anywhere else. To give you some inspiration, here are four scrappy quilts we offer at Primitive Gatherings that show just how fun and fabulous scrap sewing can be.
Think leftover scraps can’t make a showstopper? Think again. Meet Summer Breeze. This bold and colorful quilt measures 95″ x 110″ and features 143 blocks made from basic squares and half-square triangles. The pattern shines in a riot of color, but any stash combo will turn this into a scrappy masterpiece — all you need is your favorite scraps plus about 10 yards of backing fabric to finish it off.

Love quilts with tiny pieces? Settler’s Trail is a challenging scrappy stunner that clocks in at 50″ x 59″. If you adore small-scale piecing, this bad boy is for you! Inspired by a vintage quilt, this design comes from one of our lovely and talented customers who graciously shared it with us. While the pattern calls for dark reproduction fabrics for the piecing and cream for the background, you can absolutely use whatever your stash inspires. Settler’s Trail is made up entirely of about a bazillion iddy biddy basic squares, but don’t let the simple shapes fool you. It’s a tad more challenging than it looks, making it a great project for those who love working with lots of little pieces!

What if you could bottle the feeling of a crisp fall day and sew it right into a quilt? Now you can with Forest Floor — a 64″ x 76″ pattern made from 3″ finished squares in a palette of rich, autumnal shades complete with an eye-catching black and red sashing. While it certainly shines in those cozy fall colors, Forest Floor was literally made for going scrappy. Pull from every corner of your stash, mix light with dark, bold with subtle, and watch it transform into something entirely your own. If your scraps are begging to get out of the pound and into their forever home, this pretty pattern could most definitely be it!

All Mixed Up is a simple yet stunning design that proves you don’t need a complicated pattern to make a serious statement. This colorful quilt is deceptively easy, fun to look at, and super versatile — just add your favorite fabric collection and you’re in business! All Mixed Up plays nice with just about anything. Bold prints, soft florals, and even that wild piece that you haven’t been quite sure what to do with… until now! Charms, Fat Eighths, or Fat Quarters all work just as well for this 72″ x 84″ beauty. And of course, scrappy works beautifully too!

Whether you’re dreaming big with the breezy charm of Summer Breeze, loving the tiny-piece challenge of Settler’s Trail, cozying up with the scrappy magic of Forest Floor, or mixing it all up with the lively chaos of All Mixed Up, there’s no wrong way to dive into scrappy quilting. And not to mention, the Primitive Gatherings Scrappy Quilt Show is a great way to get into entering quilt shows too! Don’t forget — the deadline for the Primitive Gatherings Scrappy Quilt Show is fast approaching, so don’t let those leftover fabrics sit idle. Whether your quilt is finished, still in the works, or has yet to be chosen, make sure it arrives on time to join the fun. Who knows… You might even win a sweet prize for your effort. Go for it — I dare you! See you soon! ~Lisa
