What do you get when you combine your favorite scraps with classic half-square triangles and simple corner squares? A super cute block that’s just as fun as it is easy to make, of course! Kicking off week #19 of the MBH6 series, Jackie MacDonald of Sweetfire Road proves that simple shapes can create something truly delightful with her scrappy and oh-so whimsical heart block, Wholehearted.

Wholehearted turns classic, conservative units into something fresh, playful, and unexpectedly cute! Simple shapes come together to create a heart block that’s not only charming as heck but it also makes for a phenomenal scrap buster. This is your chance to dig into your most secret stash of leftover fabrics, mix and match without rules, and see how just a few basic shapes can turn into something you’re truly going to LOVE (pun definitely intended). Plus, it’s a great way to practice your half-square triangle technique — you know… so you don’t get rusty.

Color-Wise, the palette for my MBH6 quilt hasn’t changed. For the backgrounds, I’ve chosen two gray Bella Solids: Steel 9900 184 (filling in for Moda’s temporarily sold-out white) and Graphite 9900 202 (replacing the navy). Both will be back on our website soon, so you can grab them when they’re in stock. If your lights are running low, curated Fat Quarter bundles with 18 light FQs are available for $72. Darks aren’t bundled, so dig into your stash, play with what you’ve got, and make every block shine.

What’s better than a block that helps you feel a little less guilty about your fabric hoarding “problem?” Nothing, that’s what! Sure, one block won’t solve the never-ending scrap situation, but at least I know it counts toward something productive while I have fun playing around with ideas. And honestly? That’s close enough! We all know this little issue of ours isn’t going away any time soon, so I say — embrace it! If the scrappy shoe fits…
