Move Over Laura Ingalls — There’s a New Gal in Town and Her Name is Prairie Patches!

Hey, everyone!

You might have noticed that I wasn’t around for yet another one of my ongoing Weekend Quilt Series pattern launches last week, but as always, it was for a darn good reason. This time, I was off galavanting with some of my fellow stitchers on an ocean quilting cruise and was busy teaching classes a lot of the time, so I guess I feel like I have a pretty good excuse… I consider it a welcome occupational hazard! As fun as it was, I’m happy to be back on dry land and getting back into my usual routine. The dust from traveling has finally settled and things are calm again, so now we can talk about what’s in store in Weekend Quilt Land for the month of March.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, my co-designer Alysha and I launched the Weekend Edition Quilt Series back in July 2024 with one goal in mind: to give you a fresh, approachable quilt project every month that you can theoretically knock out in only a couple of days. Simple elements, limited piecing, no massive time commitment — just projects you can dive into on a Friday night and have something to show for it by Sunday. Whether you need a last-minute gift or a quick and cozy addition to your home, these projects have your back!

This month’s Weekend Edition Quilt is Prairie Patches — a warm, cozy, and beginner-friendly 9-patch quilt that is just as satisfying to make as it is to snuggle with. Finishing at 57¾” x 68¼”, it’s a versatile size that works just as beautifully draped over a couch as it does on a bed. Not to mention, it’s simple, easy to make, and small enough that even a first-time quilter could tackle it with confidence.

Prairie Patches is made using four 5″ charm packs of Prairie Gatherings Flannels — my latest flannel line that debuted last summer. If you haven’t gotten your hands on this line yet, prepare to fall in love! Prairie Gatherings Flannels are soft, cozy, and available in a gorgeous range of patterns and colors, from classic plaids and subtle geometrics to rich solids and elegant textures, all in deep, earthy tones like burgundy, burnt orange, and warm neutrals, as well as cool blues and grays. They’re ideal for quilts, clothing, and fall and winter accessories, but honestly — once you feel how soft they are, you’ll want to make everything out of them… ok, maybe not everything — but almost!

Whether you’re a “give me the kit and let’s go” kind of quilter or the “let me dig through my stash and see what I have first” type, Prairie Patches has you covered. For your convenience, kits featuring Prairie Gatherings Flannels are available in the shop and online, taking all the guesswork out of fabric selection. If you prefer to work from your own stash, cotton works just as beautifully as flannel, so feel free to use what you have on hand! The pattern is available in both printed format and as a downloadable PDF, so take your pick and choose whichever one works best for you! Either way, at the end of the day, Prairie Patches is everything a Weekend Edition Quilt should be — simple, satisfying, and finished before Monday morning.

Speaking of the weekend… if you’re in Wisconsin or any of the surrounding states, you’ve probably heard about the multiple storm systems forecasted to move through the area over the weekend and into early next week. We’re being told to expect strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph, combined with snow, creating blizzard-level conditions and dangerous travel — particularly on Sunday, with a total snowfall of 6 – 12+ inches of accumulation when it’s all said and done. With everyone’s safety in mind, we’ve made the decision to close the shop on Sunday, March 15th, 2026. Weather depending, we plan to be back open for normal business hours on Monday, March 16th at 10:00 a.m. CST. I know, bummer, right? But don’t fret! Online shopping is still available 24/7 on our website at https://primitivegatherings.us/. I should also mention that if you are coming in for a retreat on Sunday, we will still have the doors open at The Gathering to welcome you and get you checked in.

Looking out the window now, I see that after it was snowing like crazy on and off all day, it’s actually sunny out at the moment. That means it’s time for me to get my tail on the road and head for home before it starts up again! But don’t worry — the girls and I will be back tomorrow on my YouTube channel, STITCH with Lisa Bongean at 1:00 p.m. CST for another fun hour of Primitive Gatherings news, current happenings, and fun. I truly hope you’ll join us! All you have to do is hit the STITCH button below to watch. See you there! ~Lisa

I was on the cruise with you and took a couple of your classes. Sarah the Sea Turtle has reignited my love of wool applique and finally I am getting the hang of half square triangles. Using the triangle paper makes it so much easier. I see a few of the flannels that are definitely catching my eye. Thank you for being you.
