Debbie Maddie is Coming!

Do you love the classic color combination of blue and white? Are you a fan of working with Indigo? Does your inner-hippie love to tie-dye??? If you said yes to any one of these questions, I have GREAT NEWS to share! Later this month at The Gathering, I will be welcoming nationally renowned Shibori expert and instructor, Debbie Maddy to Primitive Gatherings! If you’re not familiar with Shibori, it’s a Japanese tie-dyeing method done by hand that produces a number of different patterns on fabric by using wringing, pressing, and squeezing techniques.

To give you a little of her history, Debbi began her journey with Indigo as most people do – in a class learning to fold and clamp fabrics, and then dyeing them with Indigo. After many classes, she decided to learn how to stitch, wrap, and fold fabric in very unusual ways to get more intricate and unique designs. She has traveled to England, twice to Japan, and all over the United States taking classes and learning from Shibori masters. Debbie has always loved fiber arts of all kinds! She has been quilting for over 35 years, pattern designing for 15, and teaching for 20. She has been featured on TV as well as online, and is a fellow fabric designer for Moda. Debbie says that her favorite thing about learning new things is sharing that knowledge with other people. It’s pretty obvious that  she loves what she does, because Debbie is an outstanding teacher! That’s why I was thrilled to hear she would be returning to The Gathering for the second year in a row. What a privilege – I can’t wait!

When Debbie was here last summer I got the opportunity to explore some dyeing techniques that I’ve never tried before, and had a ton of fun doing it. I really enjoyed experimenting with the different methods used to create Shibori art. One technique I tried involved scrunching fabric around a pipe to create a cool striped effect. I also got to play around with dyeing wool with Indigo, which produced some super pretty blues that we don’t normally see with wool. I even tried my hand at applying dye over stitching using Indigo, and ended up with some really neat star pattern results to show for it. Pretty cool!

Debbie’s classes are fun and informative! Not only does she teach you all about Indigo and Shibori, she also covers how she comes up with her fabric designs for Moda and the techniques she uses to achieve them… So in other words if you see something you really like, all you have to do is ask and she will show you how to make it for yourself! Ready to sign up? This year we’re offering two options for classes. August 30th, 2022 we are holding a one-day class that runs from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM at The Gathering. The cost for the one-day class is $175 and includes a dyeing kit, supplies, and lunch! This class gives a brief explanation of Shibori, Itajime (board clamping), marble wrapping, and other fun techniques complete with demonstrations.

If you’re looking for a more extensive class, there is also a three-day workshop being held on August 31st through September 2nd, 2022 from 9:00 AM until 5:00PM each day. The cost of the class is $425 plus lodging, and also includes a dyeing kit, supplies, and lunch (please call The Gathering at 920.778.8031 for lodging information and rates). Topics to be covered include Arashi Shibori (pole wrapping) and other types of more advanced folding, wrapping, and stitch dyeing techniques, with extensive demonstrations and more detailed instruction not typically covered in shorter classes. You can’t go wrong!Last week I caught up with Debbie while she was teaching at one of her workshops. She was gracious enough to take a minute away from her class to come on as my guest during our LIVE show, STITCH with Lisa Bongeanon Thursday. She gave us a first-hand look at the different types of projects and demonstrations she does working with Indigo and Shibori, and explained a little about the methods to her madness. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, there’s still time! You can catch the replay by hitting the STITCH button below!

If you’ve been thinking of coming to retreat but are still undecided, this is a great class to get involved in! No to mention, Debbie is just about as sweet as can be. She really is a joy to have around! I think half the battle of being a good teacher is having the right energy and attitude, and Debbie has both! Her positivity is contagious and she is always brimming with inspiration! Have I convinced you to get here yet? Space is limited so if you’re on the fence, don’t wait too much longer! I know you’re ready to sign up… Call Judy at 920.778.8031 to register!

Starlight Gatherings Trunk Show Recap

If you’re not familiar with my new fabric line, Starlight Gatherings you are in for a treat! Many of you know I live out in the country, which means that it gets pretty dark at night. The lack of city lights means much brighter stars and a dark, wide-open sky. The view of the night sky is absolutely amazing at my place, which is why it was the total inspiration behind my new fabric line. Let me take you through this gorgeous collection piece by piece!

The first quilt design in the book is called, Asteroid. Finished, it measures 74 1/4″ x  84 7/8″. This quilt features a star pattern and uses all of the blues in the line, and one cream. It reminds me of the way the stars seem to twinkle on a really cold, and clear winter night. I have a feeling we might be heading for one just like that tonight, considering it’s only about 5ºF at the moment.

Blue and white star pattern quilt

Galaxy,is also in all creams and blues, and features a really neat looking gradation from darker blues in the center, to lighter blues out toward the edge. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something you can do in a short amount of time. The simple 2″ square design makes this quilt an excellent pick for quick cutting and stitching.

Galaxy was technically designed with a border, but I personally don’t like the way it looks that way, so I opted to go without it. I also did a two-fabric version of this quilt, so if that’s more your style don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Galaxy measures 84″ x 84″ with a boarder when finished. With no boarder it will be 72″ x 72.”

Off Limits is a simple, yet larger quilt that would make an excellent beginner project. It uses all the different blues and creams in the Starlight Gatherings collection. I think this design is really cool! This quilt is definitely inspired by one of the antiques that I have in my personal collection. Blue and white is my favorite color combination and I just love finding inspiration from older historic designs. Off Limits measures 90″ x 90″ when finished. This quilt has at beautiful, 108″ wide, no-piece backing.

Blue and white quilt pattern with squaresThis quilt is also available as a smaller version measuring 45″ x 45,” which perfect for a small lap quilt or baby blanket. This size is also great for hanging on a wall for display in your home. Unfortunately, we do not have the smaller version kitted at this time, due to the fact that we aren’t able to get pre-cuts yet. Those should be arriving by the end of March.

Up next we have, Shooting Star.I love how it reminds me a little bit of a meteor shower. The stars seem like they are coming straight for you! Shooting Star is a fun pick for anyone who loves working with half-square triangles. This design is also a replication based on one of my favorites in my antique collection. It’s a very large quilt measuring 96″ x 96″ when finished, so it would be perfect for a larger bed or couch.
Star Pattern Blue and White Quilt

If you love flying geese like I do,South for the Winter is for you! This quilt is one of my favorite designs in the collection because it’s unlike anything I’ve done before. I enjoyed working on it because it felt different and interesting, and like something new for a change. Not to mention, it went together nicely and was really fun to do overall. Finished size on this one is 83 1/2″ x 83 1/2″.White quilt with blue triangle design

Star Gazing is as beautiful as it is fast and easy. Larger and more simple pieces makes this  90″ x 90″ quilt easier to accomplish in a shorter amount of time. This work of art would look absolutely stunning displayed on a bed or couch, or even laid out over a larger rustic dining room table. The design on this quilt actually reminds me of a larger version of a past baby quilt project I created called, Blue Monday.

Large Blue Star Pattern Quilt

If you’re into more tedious, detail-oriented projects, Starry Night might be for you. The pattern is based on 1/2 square triangles, and is designed to be a four block quilt with a finished size of 84″ x 84″. If you need a smaller piece for something like a lap or baby quilt, this could also be done as a one block version as well.Blue and White Star Quilt

Stars Alignedis definitely one of my favorite quilts of the entire collection. I might be a little bias… I mean you all know how much I love stars, and this design is full of them! With both white blocks and blue blocks, this piece really utilizes all the different shades of blues and creams included in the Starlight Gatherings line. It really captures the color pallet of the icy winter season and makes perfect home décor for any room of the house.

Blue and White Quilt

At 64″ x 64,” “Stellar Nurseryis the second smallest project in the book (after the smaller 45″ x 45″ version of Off Limits). I really love the look of this little quilt. I wanted to use a background that had a medium value to it, which creates the visual effect of a subtle change in color from the background to the foreground. I just love the way that looks… I think it turned out absolutely amazing!Blue and White Quilt with Rectangle Pattern

I namedStrobelafter my good friends Jim and Darci Strobel. Darci does a lot for us around here so I thought naming a quilt after her is the least I could do. I also thought Strobel sounded like a great name for a star either way, so I went with it! This project might look like a lot of work but this is a very simple and straightforward strip pieced quilt that’s great for beginners. It is designed as a two-fabric project, but you could easily take a Fat Quarter Tower and do a scrappy version of it as well. Finished size is 74 1/4″ x 84 3/4.”

Blue and White Quilt with Rectangular Design

Have I mentioned that I love scrappy quilts? “Twilight Zoneis what I like to call, “controlled scrappy.” This is yet another quilt inspired by old world style and technique. Hand appliqué is used to form the Drunkard’s Path – a classic design typically made with all curved piecing, instead of the typical straight lines and angles commonly seen in most traditional quilting. These curves create movement within the design, creating a circular or weaving pattern throughout the quilt. 61″ x 72″ is the finished size on this one.

Here’s to New Beginnings – 2022 – Revised!

Wishing you all the best for 2022! Between the construction and opening of the new retail shop and retreat house, last year sure was a whirlwind blur! I can’t thank you enough for shopping, sharing and stitching along with us both in person, and on our social media platforms. We have big plans for 2022, and hope we can continue to be a part of your life through the art of stitching!

I wanted to start off this year on a positive note so I picked out this great quilt from my archives to share with you all. It was designed a long, long time ago – 2004 to be exact – and today you can get a FREE printable PDF by clicking the link below!

I figured since all the Christmas decorations are down, now it’s time for blue and white in honor of the Winter season (Ok… Maybe Nick still has yet to take the tree down – that’s his job every year). “Streak of Lightning” is a beautiful blue and white quilt that can be done as a full-size quilt (70″ x 82″) or as a lap quilt (40″ x 58″).

“Streak of Lightning”  was originally designed by the Lincoln’s Ladies Club. The club specializes in recreating and designing quilts based on earlier time periods, using reproduction fabrics. The group was founded by Carole Charles and myself back at the Menasha, WI location of Primitive Gatherings, long before we built our new facility in Larsen, WI.

Take a look at how I’ve displayed this beautiful work of art in my own house for January! I just love this black setting for the Blue & Cream HSTs – or it actually could be a really dark blue – but ours is black…

I especially love how these colors tie right into my Anchor Point decor. Even though it’s the middle of Winter, blue and white together feels light at airy to me. Fresh and crisp like a cold Winter’s day!

If you’re looking for a smaller project, don’t worry! This quilt can be done at full size or as a darling lap quilt. Either way, I hope you enjoy it! New beginnings and a new project for 2022!
