Sewcialites 2 – Block 6 “Always Star”

Hey everyone! Back again with another exciting block release from the Sewcialites 2 Quilt-Along! This week Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms brings her creative contribution to the table with Block 6, “Aways Star.” Camille – formerly part of Bonnie & Camille, Moda’s first mother-daughter design team – is an accomplished author, quilt and fabric designer, and a fellow Moda sister of over 17 years. After working along side her mother for years she kicked off her solo career back in 2006 with her first-ever collection as a single designer, “Nantucket Summer.” Then in 2007, she published her first pattern under the Thimble Blossoms name. The rest is history!

Camille designed the Always Star block to feature traditional half-square triangles and flying geese. She said, “I’ve done several variations of this block over the years and never get tired of it! It looks great in every fabric I’ve tried and is so fun to put together.” I couldn’t agree more! This block isn’t terribly difficult but may pose some challenges for a new quilter – which is why it earned a block skill level of intermediate. Just remember, if you’re someone who has trouble with half-square triangles, you can always use my custom designed Primitive Gatherings Triangle Paper to help you along (which you can easily purchase by clicking HERE)! “Aways Star Block“ is basically a combination of squares and rectangles on the corners, flying geese, and a larger square in the center. I especially like the center square because it provides a nice opportunity for you to fussy-cut and feature your favorite fabrics or theme as the center of attention. Ready to rock this block? For the background I am using a selection from the Garden Gatherings Shirtings Collection, #49176 15 – a cream fabric with an adorable tiny mustard/orange floral print. MBH4 Block #17 – “Shoreline”

Hey Blockheads! I hope you’re ready to rock Block #17 because today is the day! “Shoreline“ was designed by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms Patterns. Stay-at-home mom gone quilter and pattern creator, she is also part of Moda’s first-ever mother-daughter team of fabric designers, Bonnie and Camille. Since her mother’s recent retirement, Camille has since started designing solo collections for Moda. Her latest line, “Dwell” is anticipated to release this fall.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with “Shoreline“ because it’s another block design that looks way more complicated than it actually is. It features a simple one-piece center, with four-patch units constructed of (your favorite) half-square triangles surrounding it. The additional units use the flip-and-sew snowball corner technique to show off your focus fabric in block A, making this an excellent piece to help you perfect your square-in-square technique. I especially like that it offers more than one color/shading choice, giving you a variety of finished product options.

If you’ve been following my progress through this QAL, you know that up until now I’ve stuck with the same fabric choices for my blocks so far. Those have been a bright Bella Solid called “Ochre,” (we are currently out of stock but should be getting more soon!) paired with my Urban Farmhouse Gatherings II line, which you can find by clicking the button below!

For this block I decided to keep my color scheme going and again went with “Ochre” as my background color. I also used a black on mid-gray Urban Farmhouse Gatherings II tiny print for the outer pieces. For the inner pieces and center, I decided to mix it up a little and added some Zen Chic choices to the mix. Those include a nice mid-gray with a small white dot and circle print, along with a mostly white center with mid-gray celestial stars. Take a look!

I’m having a lot of fun with the MBH4 QAL… but I’m not sure if it’s quite as much fun as the kids are having over at Kid’s Camp in the retreat house. If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, we just kicked off day three of our first ever PG Kid’s Sewing Camp, where boys and girls 7 and up are learning the basics of sewing and project management. Today they worked on learning how to use an embroidery hoop to cross stitch on gingham fabric. Adorable!

Kids who signed up for the multi-day camp will be back tomorrow for more fun when they combine all the skills they have learned this week to create one final surprise project. I seriously would have LOVED doing this as a kid! They are having sew…much…fun!

Those kiddos are so cute! It always puts me in a great mood to be around kids who are so interested in learning something new. Speaking of good moods, I’m feeling the itch to give away a couple prizes today so I really think I should do that.
