I love re-creating quilts…but when you start re-creating your own?

55 & Life to Go…this 55”x 55” quilt is a re-creation of one of the first quilts I designed as a Moda fabric designer. I know 10 years doesn’t make an antique…but I couldn’t help myself….I wanted to see this design in red & white…

Now… I may have been jumping the gun just a bit…when I made the 45 & Life to Go quilt, I was going to be 45 years old…kind of a middle of life age…but what I thought was 10 years is not quite so I won’t looking at 55 for at least another year…by the time this fabric comes out…oh, well I think that happens when you make it this far…can’t remember everything…45 was made is two sizes..55″ and 110″ so if anyone wants a king size that is the pattern they need to get…just in case you are thinking that you want this on your bed! I named this quilt because it has 45 star blocks in it…kind of like candles on a cake…but way better!

So…now almost 10 years later, ok not 10, but close enough …I have recreated this quilt in red & white…but I also have to admit..I did not actually stitch this quilt…Dawn Cornell, my friend pieced this for me…I cannot do them all…I know I want to, but it is just not possible…So I have some wonderful stitchers who can make some money making quilts for Primitive Gatherings…I did put the binding on! I’ll talk more about the quilting in my quilting post of Redwork Quilts!..

These little stars are only 5″. But strip piecing makes the centers possible in a snap!

We have kits and patterns available for this quilt! It would make a great quilt for a ladder, it’s small enough to be a wall hanging and hang on the wall…or even folded up and hung just about anywhere!

TAKE IT EASY… another great quilt & giveaway from Redwork Gatherings.

SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED AN EASY QUILT TO MAKE…THIS IS THE ONE…

Take It Easy…This designed popped in my head and I knew it would be so fun to make…Super simple…made with two jelly rolls! Quilt measures is 72”x 78” Just add more jellyrolls if you want a bigger quilt. This is the first quilt I made with the Redwork fabric…I think a quilt can be simple and make a stunnig impact. All the quilts we make do not have to be super hard…I like to mix in the simple one with the more intricate ones. We all need to push our skills and learn, but there are always going to be a need for fast, get it done now quilts!

Take is Easy was named while again…listening to my playlist…and thinking….hmm this would make a great quilt name…Naming quilts is the HARDEST thing to do, if you do not have some sort of method to it…I love using song titles…so here is the song this quilt was named after…I loved Glen Frey….and the Eagles…you cannot love music and not love this song...Take It Easy You can listen while you view the pics of this fun quilt!

Take It easy is a simple kit for us to make…two jelly rolls and a binding and pattern…we priced it at $90…so that is like getting the 1/2″ yds of binding free. This kit is 10% off when you place your order by the end of April. Or you can buy the two jelly rolls and the pattern separate…the choice is yours…I do not know what is the better deal…with the discounts…pre-cuts are 20% off. On the personal side…I’ve been running down the road, trying to loosen my load, I’ve got a world of troubles on my mind…(just in case you didn’t listen to the song)

Yesterday…Nick & I and my Sister and her husband Doug went for a ride on our motorcycle…there were tons of people out riding…we stopped at parks, gas stations, sat on a bench by the lake and ate outside…I wanted to pack PB&J in our saddle bags, but I got laughed at. With nothing open it is sad…my heart breaks for all those business that are closed. You need places to stop when riding a bike…and we would have stopped probably 4 times during our trip yesterday at a business and spent money. We came home to make steaks on the grill and I slept like a baby with all the fresh air. I have a total of 360 on my ride this year..not too bad since our weather has been crappy and it’s only April!!! I took most Sunday off…I get up early so I stitched few things on my #STITCH366. It felt good, now I’m eager to get back to it..

Let’s STITCH a REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt…with Efficiency

This is just a peek into how I make a quilt… maybe you will find a tip or two to use in your quilt making!

The fabrics have been starched and cut...now let’s get stitching….(I will do a post on how I cut a quilt too!)

This quilt has 3 different blocks in it…Square in a Square White, Square in a Square Red and Quarter Square Triangles (QST)

Square in a Square block White–Sort all the cut pieces into blocks…

This block starts with a white square and the smallest red triangles….

Fold the white square in half and pinch both ways…this is where the red triangle points to..the center…Start running them through the machine…

Both sides on…Press, always with steam…notice how I stack when I press.I do not trim…waste of time… Now add the next two red triangles.

Second pass…now press

Time to trim...TOOLS NEEDED…6″ ITTY BITTY SQUARE RULER…ROTARY CUTTER (red just because I can) ROTATING MAT with finger grooves for easy spinning, because we are trimming all four sides… You can start two ways…trim 1/4″ away form the point of the white square…or find the center of the square and divide the size you need to trim to and cut that in half. Place this measurement on the diagonal of the square and then trim. Lefties would always be cutting on the left side.

Trim each of the right sides of as many blocks as you can fit on the mat with room to work.

Spin the mat 180 degrees and then cut the size you need on the left trimmed side and then trim the right side again.

Turn again and find the center or 1/4″ away from the point, cut...

Turn again and trim the last side…did you notice I did not move my trimmings each time I cut? This takes up time…so I wait til the end to clear it all. I use my rotary cutter to move them out of the way if I need to. I do not set down my rotary cutter to move them.

Sort each of the next triangles on each block…

Now back to the machine to stitch the next white triangles…

Press– wait til you have two sides on…

Stitch and press the other sides.

Time to trim again…line the ruler up on the center of the red square and trim.

Again on as many as you can fit on your mat…turn the mat and line up on the left to size to trim the blocks to and cut again…

line up the center again…and cut…turn and trim the last side…

Add the next red round…

trim again…

Repeat again for the last white round…I just happen to have the perfect ruler to square up with…

Repeat for the Square in a Square Red blocks..Didn’t think you wanted to watch me do all the red ones again..lol…and the QST blocks...Trim all the blocks to the same finished size.

I usually piece my units to the exact size with this one exception…multiple square in a square is just easy to trim.

Layout your blocks…

Take a picture of your quilt to see if anything looks funny or if you have too much dark in one spot or anything silly like that…

Start piecing rows together…I put a pin in the first block so I do not mix anything up, if I think I mixed something up I can always check the photo…I really love these new gripper pins…they are fantastic! They are fine and it is nice to have that rubber grip for putting them in and pulling them out…I didn’t think I would like them but LOVE them…you also can iron them…they won’t melt…..they are MAGIC PINS100 & MAGIC PINS 50You also can check your fabrics when you layout your rows…

Press rows in opposing directions.

Press long row seams open when stitching rows together. Large Strip StickAll pieced together…off to the quilter…do you do this when you have a quilt with not border? Stay-stitch the edges 1/8″ all the way around? Do this so the piecing is not pulled apart.

Back from quilting…I am so pleased with how this one turned out but I will discuss this in another post about the quilting. I named this quilt… I THINK I’M IN LOVE…She lies flat and straight….I washed it after I stitched the binding on…I want the quilting to sink in.

Now…I wish to go back to the beginning…back to the inspiration…an antique in my collection.

What can I say…it’s a fabulous quilt…so we had to re-create it. Here is the backing we used…I also set this quilt 9×11 blocks( 63″x 77″) instead of 10×10 (70×70) like the antique, so you have a choice.If you wish to order a kit for this quilt they are on sale 10% off on a PRE- ORDER. Long, Long Way from Home!

Long, Long Way from Home… is a tribute to my time on the road away from home teaching quilting. The name of this quilt is a song title, this one from Foreigner, another song from my youth and still on my playlist today. The quilt measures 44”x 44”.

The Redwork panel in the line also makes a great backing because you do not have to piece anything…this quilt needs at least 52″x 52″ back for the Long Armer. A yard and a half is prefect! The panel is 58″ wide.

I had Jake quilt this quilt in a honeycomb pattern with red thread. Do you stitch a red & white quilt in red or light thread? Well… you will get to see some of the other quilts quilted in light thread. I will do a whole post on What color THREAD should I(or have my) quilt, quilted with? I think this is in a more important question than what pattern should I quilt…

How to use a small quilt if you don’t need a baby quilt?

This little quilt will make a nice wall hanging or a little baby quilt that could be loved and loved, the more you wash it the better it will look! I also think this size quilt is very functional for home decorating…

If you have that little boring corner like I do…you can just add something simple like a ladder or drying rack with a folded quilt…

Bring some color into the kitchen or dining room…look what this quilt does to this neutral space…

They also fit beautifully as an accent on a chair in the living room.

Or sometimes you just need quilts for the STACK IN the cupboard!

Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August

This Spring Quilt Market in May would have marked my 20th Spring Quilt Market…I had some fun things planned…but as they say…Life Happens…so I will just have to have the fun right here on this Blog!! I am going to slowly discuss/explain this fabric line and the quilts we have made with it… We have the time…I am going to enjoy it as I talk about them over the next week or two… Twenty years is a long time…I have had a blast…I think this is really what I was meant to do…even though it wasn’t in my plans...sometimes it just happens that way. I am grateful for everything and especially those of you who have followed me through the years… and I am not done yet…there is still so much to do…

…is my Moda fabric line based on my antique quilt collection.

My favorite quilts in my collection are the Red & White ones…I love red & white quilts so much that I knew I had to create fabrics inspired by these quilts. A treasured antique Redwork quilt inspired the main panel in this line and it can be used for so many things…

If you love slow-stitching –and you know I do- the blocks can be stitched over the top of the printed lines or they can be left as they are. The designs can also be used as the center squares of pieced blocks, or just add a feather stitch between the blocks and it will be like the inspiration quilt…the possibilities are endless. The panel is 58″ wide with a 36″ repeat. I do not have a real pic of the panel. Can you see how we made it look like it is stitched already?

Our panel is made up of only flowers & birds.

I also have a few small baby quilts with redwork designs on them… There is something so sweet about redwork stitching.If you can’t wait for me to explain all the fabrics and quilts…they are already on the site for pre-order.
