Day 1…Needful things for Quilters…

Day 1...Juki Sewing Machineย 1 daysth

Now I know we pretty much all have a sewing machine…or two or three or even more…But I just have to talk about the sewing machine I use 99% of the time…It is my #1 Needful thing…Most of you probably have never heard of Juki…so let me just say they are not new to the market…Juki is well known in the garment industry and are mostly industrial machines. ย I think I have had a Juki for about 8 years now…I also own 2 Berninas, 1060 and a 1530, and a couple of featherweights…one black and one white. I confess this to you so you also know what I am comparing to and you all know I teach all across the country and have stitched on many machines.

I bought the Juki with the intention to use it as a second machine to have set up for machine quilting my little quilts, and also so I didn’t have to change the walking foot from my regular foot on my Bernina…that would have been nice, right?…Juki has entered the quilt world with a semi-industrial machine for quilters. ย Here are a few of the features that the Juki machines have…all metal…no plastic bobbins, no plastic feet, ย comes with all sorts of feet including 2 free motion feet and a walking foot, a larger 9″ opening between the body and the arm, so machine quilting would be easier to handle. ย It has a nice extension table, this is nice for retreats, I have it embedded in my table usually. ย The machine ONLY stitches straight. ย Now this might be an issue for some, but I was only going to use this for machine quilting…The fact that it only stitches straight is actually a plus…nice tension all the time, single hole throat plate . ย It holds large cones as well as regular thread…It has an automatic thread cutter, automatic needle threader , knee lift and stitches 1500 stitches per minute or something like that, in other words it is FAST.

After stitching on this machine and using it. ย I did not want to stitch on anything else. ย It “pieces” beautifully…I didn’t have to hang on to my threads at the start, the feed dogs are nice and close together and ย fed my little pieces in nicely. ย Having the single hole meant my piecing wasn’t sucked down into that oblong hole… and again…I could stitch, cut my thread with my foot(or there is a button, but I like my hands free to hold on to my patches) knee lift my presser foot and be on to the next thing…I especially love piecing triangle paper on the Juki for all the reasons I just stated…Now I know being fast really should not be an issue, right? We want to be accurate! ย But let me tell you, if I am stitching strips, borders or you name it…fast is handy…I tried going back to my “regular” machine to piece on…it was almost painful!!! Just shoot me…I loan this machine at The Gathering, but it comes with a warning…if you stitch with it you WILL be going home with it! ย I think only one person didn’t buy one after she stitched on it for a weekend…lol…They also have updated the Juki recently…I have a TL98Q, now they make a TL2010 Q1, they have updated to an LED light…they have added a Turtle and a Hare button, if you want to control how fast it can go…and they changed the foot pedal, a bit…I love my 98 and the features they added do not make a difference to me…so I am keeping my 98.

Here is the only con to my Juki…it is heavy…but it is all metal! ย You can’t have metal parts and it be light!…I think of it like today’s featherweight-but it is not light. ย Anyone can work on a Juki…it is a basic machine, it has no computer…it just needs to be oiled and used and it is happy!

So if you are ever in the market for a machine, please check out the Juki’s and you can read all the technical words I should have used to explain it. ย They now have a presence at the larger quilt shows and will soon come out with a long arm, that will be most reasonably priced. ย I do sell the Juki 2010Q1 at my store…I could sell other machines but remember what I said, I only sell what I use…therefore I sell the Juki’s. ย I am placing the Juki 2010Qi on sale now until the end of the year at a special of $899-(yes…not a typo) including shipping. ย This is a great deal. ย We will order more for this same price as long as you order before the end of the year. ย JUKI ย  ย In 2013 they will go back to $999.00 still a great price when you think about what you all get with this machine! ย Please allow a few weeks for delivery…we will not charge your card until we are shipping it.

In this “needful series” I could have talked about a lot more things…but I promise to do so in posts in 2013 or like I said the YouTube videos, where a video would be easier than taking a 100 pics and writing about it.

Here are some of the things on my list for next year: ย 1/2 square and quarter square triangles….single and double fold binding….instant antique….fusible web..especially Steam-a-steam 2 LITE….Cutting….Blanket stitch…stem stitch…colonial knots…couching…and that is what is on my list so far…if you have anything that I may have missed or you need help with please email me and I will let you know if I know enough about it to help you…I am also going thinking about ย doing a Stitch-along project on YouTube…we will cover each block and have step by step lessons for an ongoing project. ย Hopefully you can join me…we will offer a kit so you will have everything you need to Stitch Along…let me also know if you think this may be something you are interested in…

Yesterday’s winner is….Comment #112…Pam Millerย December 23, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Lisa, I love all the tips you have given us. The circle template will certainly improve my circle making. I canโ€™t wait for a few free minutes to get started on another project. I made the candle mat in your Primitive Christmas book and sent it to my sister in Virginia for Christmas. It turned out great and I canโ€™t wait until Christmas Day when she calls me to let me know how she likes it. I could have used the circle template to mark all of those circles. Maybe next time. ย Merry Christmas!

Pam…please send me your address and we will send you some Snowman Gathering goodies! ย It will be a surprise!

Please comment today, as I will be picking winners for today’s post…as well as a sheep ornament kit for 12 lucky winners from my Christmas Blog Hop…so if you didn’t comment on that post get back there and do so…hope you all are enjoying your families at this time…LB

I currently have a Bernina and recently purchased an HQ Sweet Sixteen, but I am certainly interested in a Juki and plan to add one as soon as I can. Sharon Schamber swears by them, too. Thanks so much for your tips. I hope to see you when you come to Lakeland in March.

    Dear Lisa,
Thank you so much for the twelve day gift of your expertise. I could ask Santa for every single thing you find “needful” but will settle for what I can currently afford! Better than things though are all the great tips that will help me perfect my skills. I look forward to your future assessment of the Juki long arm machine as that has been on my wish list ever since a friend let me long arm a quilt last year on her machine. Looking toward to the after Christmas sale. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I can totally relate to your comments on the Juki TLQ machine! I bought one last summer and I don’t like to use anything else now. I even sew my clothes on this machine and switch to the other machine just for buttonholes! Of course, I do still use my serger for the seams but this is the main machine for all sewing now! It’s so easy to piece quilts with this machine. Love, love, love my Juki!

I will attest to how fast you can sew on your Juki – I think there was smoke rolling off when I was there! Love the stitch-a-long idea – and it would be great to have videos and lessons on some more stitches. I have relied on You Tube to learn a few but I’m not always convinced that they look that great! Have a Merry Christmas!

I’d never heard of Juki until recently when I was looking for a new machine. Mine is very basic and since I was just learning to quilt it was fine. My husband did research as well as I did and we both came up with Juki!! I love mine and have enjoyed using it. Thanks for sharing your Needful Things. I’ve really enjoyed learning from your knowledge. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Lisa, I have really enjoyed your favorite things blogs. It was like having a personal shopper pointing out all the really valuable things I need in my sewing room. Please do the sew along. Hi Lisa,

I too LOVE LOVE my Juki. I have the same model, but am going to keep it and not upgrade. I ordered a 1/4″ foot from Ed Raichert that is specially made for quilters and is better for quilt fabric density than the 1/4″ foot at came with it. I have probably recommended that for to at least 10 other Juki owners, and everyone that has bought one LOVES it! I first read about it on the Juki Yahoo site a couple of years ago.

It’s wonderful reading all your posts! I am a lover of handwork thanks to my aunt teaching me embroidery, quilting when I was 15. That was 40 years ago and she is hand stitching at 80.

I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!

I really appreciate all the time and thought you have taken in giving us your needful things. I have drooled over all of them, but this is the topper. I am so glad to know about Juki. I didn’t know anyone made a none computer machine today. I use a Bernina 930 because it is mechanical. I wish I could order one today, but that is not possible. I will keep the Juki in mind if I am ever able to buy one in the future.

I have enjoyed all your posts, but today really caught my eye. Several years ago I purchased a PC Quilter. The lady threw in a Baby Lock Quilters Pro. To me this looks similiar to the Juki. I have never used the PC Quilter or the Quilters Pro. No place to set it all up. Now I am thinking, after reading about you and your Juki, that I should get it out and at least try it. You have motivated me.

I also am interested in a Stitch Along for next year.

Lisa, I had an opportunity to learn about the Juki machine years ago and was unable financially to purchase one. Later a friend of mine was selling her Brother Nouvelle 1500 which is basically the same machine with a few minor differences. LOVE IT! I too would rather sew on that machine than any other. Well later another friend was selling her Juki 98Q and I was financially able to purchase it (she had too many machines and favored another). Anyway I was blessed to have 2 wonderful machines. I actually like the threader better on the Brother and the 1/4″ mark on the throat plate on the Brother, although the needle up/down on the Juki is rather nice. Both are wonderful machines! I have sewn on others but these two are my absolute favorites hands down!

Can’t wait to see if I get Christmas money tomorrow and if so, may have to consider this machine. I’ve thought about it every since hearing you talk about it at the Crazy Quilt Retreat. I also use a Bernina but it is 25 yrs old and has a few glitches in it. Okay, off to make some poppy seed dressing!

A friend of mine purchase one after using it at the retreat house. She loves it and is a speed demon on it also. But with twin boys she needs to be. That will be another thing I need to try out. But I’m not so sure my husband would be to excited to see yet another machine come into the house. I love all of your tips and tricks. I love forward to them every year. I first saw it at a Quilters Expo and fell in love with it, unfortunately the booth where I saw it was not selling it but it was for their use during the show. Really good series, Lisa. Personally, I think the YouTube idea is great because I don’t always want to travel to take a class (which can be very expensive when thinking about travel, motel, registration fees, class fees, etc.), and while I may not want to do the project offered in a class, I do want to learn the technique, and seeing it demonstrated at home, in my pjs or whatever, on my own time, and many other perks makes it even more desirable. Go for it, and I’ll be one of your frequent online students. Gotta go fill out my order now. Happy holidays.

Lisa, thank you so much for all of the useful tips these past twelve days. I watched the videos of you with Mary Fons (again) and can say you are a natural! Can’t wait to learn more from you! I have been a sewer for more years than I care to remember and have always used a Singer machine. My husband bought me one the Christmas before we were married and it lasted for nearly 30 years (the machine that is, we’re still married!) I have since bought a school model, convincing myself I only needed to sew a quick seam here and there. I have been retired from teaching since 2010 and I think it may be time to treat myself to a “serious” machine since I have been doing a LOT of mini quilt piecing. A Juki may be in my future thanks to your recommendation. Wishing you and your family the merriest of Chritsmases and a wonderful 2013.

I’m been thinking about trading in or getting a straight stitch machine. You are so tempting with the JUKI. Know someone who does all her sewing and quilting on an older model and loves it. Like you say, it is a fast machine with few parts to mess up. Miss the medal bobins and haven’t seen one since my mother traded in her White. We should have kept it for straight stitching. I’m thinking about a Juki, Maybe I should sing that I’m dreaming of a Juki.

Loving all you hints, etc. How about a tutorial showing you piecing on your Juki. I’m one who can read or watch a concept — both makes it wonderful.

Thank you for sharing. I have a Pfaff and love the built in walking foot, her name is Ethel, a beautiful red Janome 7700 named Lucy and my Serger is name Desi. I find it easier to curse at Desi (liked it better than Ricky) when he is misbehaving. I am lacking a Fred so in a couple of years I will add to my collection. I will try a Juki. Fred was a stout man and is a fitting name for a solid chunk of metal. LOL! Merry Christmas to you and your family.

This is a Needful thing post I will be filling away. One day I hope to get a decent machine that I can do free motion on. Right now I use a Singer that is about 30 years old. It only does straight stitch and zigzag. It is very heavy also. I love it, but there is no free motion. If I could figure out a way to do that with this machine I would be very happy. But the Juki does interest me, I really don’t use a lot of fancy stitches anyway! Happy Holidays!

Lisa, thank you so much for the great ideas on the 12 most needful list. I mentioned the Juki to my husband who owns a Janome dealership in Sheboygan Falls, he suggested I try the Janome 1600P which has all the same features you mention plus a few extras. I’ll let you know what I think. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas.

Lisa, my daughter would appreciate a punch needle youtube video…she is off at college, but was working on a snowman kit she bought at your shop, and her stitches weren’t as tight and seemed longer and puffier on the right side and she is wondering why…nobody at the shop last week could help her. YouTube by you would be perfect for her. Thank you!

Merry Christmas! The info on the Juki was very interesting. You did a great job describing it. Sounds like an easy machine to use and the price seemed very reasonable. No muss-no fuss type of machine with little that could go wrong. I will have to check into that more. Enjoy your Christmas snow-we are expecting severe thunderstorms and possible tornado activity tomorrow. We may have to postpone our Christmas dinner until Wednesday when it supposed to be blue skies. Have a great time with your family.

I attended a Cindy Needham course on free motion and while I did fine on my rented Bernina, noticed half the class brought their Juki machines. I asked if I could try one out and it blew my mind! Bought one as soon as I got home, and it is my free motion magic machine! Looking forward to trying their new long arm machine, too.

The Juki sounds like just the ticket. This would certainly be a BIG step up for me. Thanks for this whole 12 days of Christmas. You’ve passed on so much good information and educated me on a lot of good products new to me. And besides that, it’s been fun, even if I don’t win anything. My wish list is now a mile long.

Simply put, I love my Juki. She is the Queen in a sewing room of two Berninas and a Bernina long arm! She is a workhorse, sews like a dream two years later, and is very easy to maintain. Iโ€™d give up a Bernina (not both, just one!) and keep her!
