Hey Everyone….
I am happy to report I only have 1 more thing to do before I leave for Market…and that is to design a little 18″ quilt for Moda School House and then a Blog Hop in September…but I have been, under the gun, so to say for some time…it feels pretty good to be almost caught up…but then there is that 300 yds of new fabric sitting on my table…so you kind of get the idea…but that doesn’t have much to do with this coming market….I will be posting my new wooly things starting on Monday so you can see what our new Spring Market designs are…and maybe order one or two if you really love them!!!
I also want to say that I find that when I teach some of my student are too stessed out about not doing it right, or not having the same thread I list…here’s the thing…some of the threads can be used on more than one color of my wools…if you have a wool piece you are going to stitch and you don’t have the same number I have stitched it with, look at what you do have and run a thread of it across your wool…if it looks good use it!!! If you don’t have anything that will work…then order exactly what I used….
I also give you layouts and tell you to use a light table to get exact placement…I rarely have exact placement in my blocks…I lay my shapes down…if they look good I fuse them…If I am having trouble and things are not working I will use the light box to place them with a little more accuaracy…
Now our new SBOW will have a word “inked” in on it…we will need the light box for that if you want it to look like the fancy typed word….but what if you wanted to draw your own word in your own handwriting? I say go for it!!! Handwriting is going to be a lost art soon…

Lisa, all of your projects are “to die for.” Your blog is the first thing I open every morning when I get to my computer…I’m always hoping for some new ideas. I was especially surprised today when I saw my quilt on your blog…thank you. More so, however, thank you for all you do for quilters…and especially so, thank you for telling all of us that quilting is for fun and not necessarily for perfection! Every quilt has imperfections but it is always the “journey” getting to the final product. I can’t wait for June to get here to receive my first package with the SBOW!!
I am so excited for this years SBOW. Love all your designs and I have made many of them. I am currently working on a lattice quilt for my granddaughter for her Big Girl bed and I am working on a quilt for my niece that is getting married June 8th (nothing like waiting to the last minute) I work well under pressure. I am sure you know the feeling!

I am a new and definitely big fan. I was lucky enough to get to visit the PG shop at Easter. What wonderful people! I was there for 4 hours!! And I wasn’t overwhelmed because I LIVE on the website.
That said…excuse this wet blanket: I recently used the black frixon pen to mark a moda fabric (“grace” collection) for free-motion quilting and on the red and brown it did leave a white line. I believe it to be residue and there is no getting it out! Since I spent months hand appliquéing (“Noel” was the pattern) I am sure glad the quilt was for me and not a gift. I had tested when using to mark my applique but, the 2 fabrics that showed the residue were not involved. So…not only TEST but, every fabric!
After taking a beginner’s “creating with wool” class at my local shop I was taught to mark with this pen also on a crazy quilt pattern. On a piece of “non-woven” white wool that I used as a background another problem…the black line did not completely go away. I was able to re-do but, i now steer clear of this pen. 🙁
Keep up the good work and know we’re out here lapping it up. I now have a PG section in my sewing room!

I know what you mean with the pens…but I use it only on things I will stitch over…not for marking quilt lines…I also use it to mark my stitching lines for half sqaure triangles…so yes it is beware and alway test…good advice
Barb, I have heard that the white residue will disappear when quilt is washed. That worked for me! If it is something that you don’t plan to wash, try spot cleaning. Good luck, I hope it works for you. Jane l
I NEED to be reminded time to time that quilting is supposed to be FUN. Thanks. Sometimes I get stressed out with making my piece “just perfect” or finishing it on deadline, that some of the fun is lost. When I can relax and just do it, things go fine.

Thanks for the notes on “slight” changes and the need to not be perfect. I too see people not wanting to do projects because they think they are too hard and it’s just their perception. Love your little wool projects and hope to see you at a show over the summer. P.S. Those Frixion pens are the greatest thing for marking. Wonder if you have seen any fabric damage where they have been.
Right now I’m working on 2 queen size quilts with falling maple leaves. Sure hope to have the tops together and get them off to the quilter by fall. I love your helpful hints, can’t wait to see the new stuff.

I’ve actually been doing some embroidery. It would be fun to tr;y the Frixion pens. Starting a new quilt project and finishing some binding is on my list. Maybe if I start now, those quilts will be finished in time to give away at Christmas….

Hi LIsa! Like everyone else, I love your projects and right now I am working with some wool ‘scraps’ that my sis in law gave me (huge pieces in lovely earthy colors)..but I digress…I’m just practicing on these scraps before I order one of your wonderful projects. In the meantime, just had to put in my two cents worth and say that I am saddened that the schools are thinking, (some have decided) that children no longer need to learn penmanship. I understand we are in the “Electronic Age”, and I love it myself… BUT does that mean we should deprive our younger generations of this important communication skill??? If you stop to think about it, it is really pretty frightening how impersonal our interactions with others is becoming. I could get on my soap box and really get going, but I won’t, LOL. Still, I’d lot’s rather read a hand written note on a card, or better yet, hear my kids and grandkids voices say “happy Mother’s Day” than to read it on a text or an e-card. Okay, Nuff said…as for marking pens, I adore Frixion pens, but the two I’ve had forever are running dry and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere…not even my local office supply. Go figure!!! I do think they are the best marking pens I have ever used. Hugs….

What a good reminder to “make do” when you don’t have exactly the proscribed color of something, and not get “uptight” about it. It takes all the enjoyment out of it. I’m trying to trust my creative instincts more, and see if it looks right and just keep going. I’m a long-time fan of yours; keep up the great work!

I agree completely! Too many quilters seem to think their project should look exactly like the original. I say, make it your own–put a little spin on it so it is meaningful to you and your family and you will love the end result even more!

Right now I’m working on a wool table topper. I’m done with the folk art center and trying to figure out what to do with the edges.

Have fun at market. I am looking forward to seeing your new designs. I am working hard on finishing Evelyn’s Album before this years SBOW ships. I am almost finished and it looks beautiful. Liz Armstrong’s version of my favorite things is great. Just the inspiration I needed to pull those finished blocks out and finish that quilt also.

I am hand quilting my new granddaughter’s quilt. She will arrive on Tuesday-I can hardly wait. Her quilt is red and white, just like the other 4 quilts that belong to my grandchildren. My daughter loves red and white quilts. This one is my favorite, I think I love those Frixion pens. I’ve used them for quilting designs and embroidery. They are wonderful!

Happy Mothers Day to everyone!!! I have taken care of my grandsons since the day they were born while their parents work. A true labor of love! Now that they are 12 & 10 they pretty much occupy themselves with a little supervision so they don’t kill each other…lol So while they play video games or watch tv, etc. (not all day). I’ll ask them if they mind if I sew for awhile? Go ahead grandma, I’ll get your coffee. We are all in the tv room doing our own thing, but together. In between their games they’ll come and check out my sewing & tell me how pretty it looks. It is so nice to have my sewing time & my two buddies beside me while we enjoy the things we like to do. Our special day is everyday – it’s like a breath of fresh air when I’m with them! I’m sure many of you can relate. Thank you Lisa for providing small beautiful projects that you can work on wherever you are. Enjoy your day!
I have a black frixion pen, I had no idea they came in other colors. I can’t imagine 300 yards of fabric, it would be overwhelming to me. Anxious to see what you are making.
I have 5 yds of 40 skus….then I have 5 yards of 20 different white shirting with many georgeous colors on them…I can’t wait to show you all!!!
I love looking at all of your wool projects. I am currently working on a small quilt and prepping a wool project by tracing the many shapes on to heat N Bond. It is autumn BOM. I have not tried the Frixion pens but have heard wonderful things about them. I love reading your blogs posts and seeing all the wonderful projects you show. They so inspire me.

Hi Lisa, I just received my first issue of Primitive Quilts And Projects and decided finally to start using my Wool Gatherers stash (too much fondling not enough working!) and have decided to do one project minimum per issue. So my virgin cuts of the wool were made to create Kim Diel’s Marlarky. I chose that because I could prepare the pennies prior to a plane trip and could do one or many on each leg of the journey. The prep is the work, the stitching is the vacation! It is going to be lovely and I will send a photo upon completion – but not this week as this is a family vacation – but soon!
Trying to decide whether to do the summer bow … if I win the pens then it will be an omen! You are so generous with ideas and product – thanks!

I am finishing up on some pennies to make a table topper and still working on last years SBOW 🙁 I am one of those that always felt I needed to have the exact color of thread and achieve that perfection. It is refreshing to have a designer like yourself tell us to work with what we have and that no one is perfect. I also love that you share your tips and tricks, not everyone does that unless you attend one of their workshops. You truly are Energizer Bunny of the quilting world.

Lisa, I just got my first LB project back from the quilter this week (it’s sigh worthy): Vintage Nine Patch from your class at Primitives of the Midwest. I learned so much from that class, and the quilt is gorgeous! I’m a fool for anything with words, alphabets, and/or the colors of the SBOW, so I am counting the hours until the first block is received! Keep up the good work, and take time to breathe!

I took a class from you at Gruber’s in St. Cloud with the Christmas Time wool mat. Really enjoyed the class and your energy and positive attitude. I also try and do needle turn applique and I’m amazed at the students/shoppers that want to buy the exact fabric, thread, used in the original design. To me that’s part of the fun and creativity is putting in my choices and changes an exact replica is not nearly as exciting.
Have a great market. I love Connie’s setting with cream. Just lovely! Turkey is done! Only half my Evelyn border to go, then done! Hogita says hi! I would be done stitching if she helped.

Lisa, Lisa, thanks for saying it’s okay to use something other than what the patternor directions say! I am new to the wool applique and I like it alot better than applique with fabric. NO needle turn for me!! I am working on my third wool project and have two more waiting in the wings. HOpefully one will be entered at our county fair this year. I find so much inspiration in your blog posts it’s unbelievable. Thanks for being so down to earth and helpful. Now, I would really like that set of pens!!!

I have a question about the words on this summers BOW. When you say the words are “inked” what exactly does that mean? Are the words already on the blocks? In the samples that you show, is that your handwriting because if it is, then I want you to write the words on all of mine because it’s beautiful!
I’m so far behind on all my projects…dong the sashing strips on Flower Penny Garden from 2011 SBOW and working on block 7 from Evelyn’s Album, 2012 SBOW.

I will supply you with the word the way it appears on my block…you then will trace it with an untra fine tip black permanent pen…like the one I showed in a post or two before…you will trace it with a light box or some source…you will outline the word, then remove it and then darken/color in, the thicker parts of the word.

One of the things I like about quiltiing is the FUN! I think of the people I have met, the places I have been and the things I have done because of quilting

I love piecing your designs and making it a little of my own with swapping fabrics or re-designing the borders… but the markers would add another element to make it special. I love all your patterns and enjoy reading your blog.I am working on your penny flag and have it half cut.I love working with wool . I also agree with you about people who have to have the exact color of thread or wool as the pattern. Be creative…use what looks good to you. I LOVE Frixion pens…especially for marking embroidery lines. It’s so much easier on the eyes.I have been using them for at least a year and have had no problems.
I am currently working on a “Scrappy Many Trips Around the World” quilt made with Civil War fabrics. I’m looking forward to the new BOW, and I’m planning to write the words in my own handwriting, and then stitching over it.
I finishing a Batik BOM so I cna be ready for my WBOW comes in June. I can hardy wait.

I have never worked with wool before so I am very excited about the SBOW 2013. I am hoping that each week my skills will improve despite the arthritis. I refuse to let it stop me! I liked your comment about handwriting. I teach second grade and I teach my students cursive. Some of them have lovely penmanship.

Meeting you and enjoying your booth at the APQS Quilt show in Lancaster PA in March was the highlight of the show for me. I love your products, and getting to stand in your booth was a joy that I never imagined. I am just getting back into quilting, and the love for your designs and fabrics has been an inspiration. I have not used the pens you mentioned here, but would love the opportunity. I’m totally in love with the Moda Snowman Gatherings fabric. Can’t wait to get started.
I would love to win the pens. I have used them in the past and like them.
I try to enjoy the process. I don’t live by a store that sell the threads so I have to order them on line which means I’m too inpatient to wait at times. Sometimes I find that with hand dyed wool, that a color may look different from one section to another so I do change colors or decide I want to contrast instead of blend. I’m working on a JLWC quilt. My cats are helping.
I like to make quilts by starting with a pattern or a picture – then I tweak it a little to make it my own! Would love to give these pens a try – I’ve read about them and they sound GREAT!
Great post! I can’t wait to see what you bring back from market and all of the goodies that you have prepared for us. I just have to say, “Amen!” to what you had to say about making adjustments to pattern directions. I use directions more as suggestions. Flexibility and added creativity never hurt anyone.
I am so far behind on all of my projects. I started a new job and all of my quilting got put on the back burner. I am contemplating doing the SBOW since I have summer break off and will have more time to work on projects. Those markers would be a great tool to add to my tool box as well. Hi Lisa, My local quilt shop just got the snowman gatherings fabric in. I am going to buy enough of it to make 3 pillow cases. Two for me and one for my sister. And I am hoping to have extra to make a couple of your snowman projects. I’ll be going to my cottage soon and that is when I will work on the projects I bought from your shop and booth in Cincinnati . Can’t wait!! I first promised my son I would make him a team Canada hockey wall hanging though, so when thats done then I will do my wool projects. I can’t wait to see what you are doing next.

I’m working on Camp Randall project that I purchased from your shop. I just love it! I have never tried those pens. I ‘m excited to see your flannel quilts that will be coming out in your book.
Love all your designs. Can’t wait to see what’s new for spring. I’m working on too many different things right now that I need to regroup and at least finish something.
I am still working on Lisa’s Flower Garden. My parent’s both passed away in the last quarter of 2012 and taking care of them was my main job for the last 3 or 4 years. Now I am cleaning out their house and deciding what is important to me and how to make their home my husband and my home. Loved this blog where you talked about how you just sort of lay the pieces down until it looks right. I do the same thing. I’m a designer at heart. My threads are what I already had, but I think my work would go faster if I was using pearl cotton instead of DMC floss.
I haven’t been working on much lately. I really need to finish some small projects that are all at different stages of completion. Maybe tomorrow (Mother’s Day) I can get some time to stitch.

Finishing the Bride
I am looking forward to both of the summer blocks of the week. I’m winding up a year of teaching high school math and have had to put quilting aside for the next month. I’m not whining. I’m fitting quilting into my life with comfort and joy and no guilt. Your SBOW is a reward for a job well done (by my standards anyway). Thank you for this unique program.
The pens would be fun to play with, especially in an unfinished embroidery/quilt project that I would like to pick up once again.

I sew enjoy your posts and web site. Also, thank you for helping me make choices in Houston last year. I have almost finished my project. My hubby and I are sitting outside this morning having coffee and enjoying the cool air before the day heats up. There are sew many birds out flying and making noises. Summer is definitely here in The San Joaqin Valley of California.
I have over indulged on your class list this summer, so I can’t wait for the fun. I will be repeating the working with wool so my SIL can do it to! Loved that class!

Thanks for sharing about the Frixion pens. I have a friend that mentioned these, but I did not know about them. I just bought some at Target and thought I might try them. Glad to hear that you like them!

WOW!!! I didn’t know Frixion made so many colors. I bought mine in a 3 pack from Target. I wish they could figure out how make their ink in white. Can’t wait to see your new patterns.

I grew up in the home of a small business man, so I TOTALLY support shop local frame of mind. That being said, sometimes, the box stores have more convenient hours. I was working on a project and my pen ran out of ink, the one that disappears with water. On a late Saturday, I didn’t want to wait until Monday, so I did the unthinkable, I bought a pen from the open all night store in town. O M G, NEVER AGAIN. I wash away the ink, when the fabric dries, I have blue lines re-appearing, it took me most of the day to get it completely out. Primitive Gatherings, Monday morning will be my choice next time.
I’m eagerly awaiting the summer block of the month and plan to work it and the freebie through the summer months.

Loved seeing last sumers wool bow done in a cream setting. Mine is going on a dark red wall, so I can’t finish it like Lisa’s version.

STOP! Don’t delete this post. Google is actually rewarding you for the traffic you are attracting.you may not realize this fact but comment and URL posted on your site will help us both improve our Search engine performance. Some people call it spam but Google is looking at all that traffic coming to your site and is actually rewarding you by upping your search engine position. Google is thinking you must be important. Take a look at your stats and you will see what I’m talking about.
Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea
