Recently was given this photo from one of my aunties…Gladys…I do not know how old my Dad is here but I am guessing late 20s. If your husband isa car nut, can you ask him what make and year this car is? I would love to know and appreciate it…but anyway…my Dad painted cars for a living…he knocked out their dings and reshaped them back into “like new” again. Did you notice that this car is in “primer” meaning he is working on it. My Dad would buy a smashed up car…put new parts on it or use fiberglass to “mud in” its defects and then sand and shape then prime and paint it…but usually the painting part was always “put off” for a bit and I remember my Mother driving several cars in primer until my Dad found another car to fix up…then it was time to paint the previous one and sell it so he could move on to the “new” fixer upper…and the cycle would keep repeating… I remember we had a Dodge Charger, Chrysler New Yorkers…Cordovas…and so on….He never had time for our cars because he was too busy painting everyone else’s, because everyone in town wanted him to fix his car…My Dad has been gone for 10 years now…I miss him and wonder what he would think about what I am doing now…but thinking about it…I really do know what he would think….We recently lost Nick’s Dad…and are still dealing with that loss as well…But life go on and I we have to make the best of what life we all have left because we really don’t know or can count on it…it is out of our hands…
So… I LOVE your guesses…I would picture my Dad being a farmer…or all of the professions…and this made me laugh…Everyone loved my Dad….and yes…he also loved to hunt, fish, play the harmonica, stump fiddle (hummstrumm), spoons and even the accordion…He had lots of buddies to do all of this stuff with as well as us kids and Mom…
Now the winner are…
Kathy W comment 33, Rosemary Redhead comment 39 and Karen S.comment 56….Now if you notice i have disqualified my first cousin Mary…MDquilter..really Mary??? Hi Lisa, My husband’s guess is that it is 1955 DeSoto, which is a Chrysler product. My husband has a 1963 Thunderbird for sale if you know of anyone interested. It is located in Massachusetts. Thanks for all your inspiring ideas. JoAnn Borges
I’m not going to guess the type/year of the car. But, I bet if I asked my dad, YOUR dad’s brother, Wenz, he would know. Uh huh, this is your cousin taking in all your blog wonderfulness. You are a very talented lady, and I wish I had known you growing up. Smiles, Linda Hoefler Kilsdonk @ http://www.paperseedlings.com
Have a look at the 55 Imperial here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_%28automobile%29 . It looks like your Dad’s doesn’t have the rear bumper fitted, and it does look like it has the place for the fender-top rear lights. The 1956 has started getting the tail fins – so I don’t think it’s that one. The trailing edge of the windows on the rear door has the wrong slant for a Studebaker. Tricky to work out from the one picture of the end that is partly disassembled 🙂
Sorry to hear Nick’s father recently passed away. Try to keep memories of happier times in your thoughts and treasure all the things your Dads have taught you. You must have inherited some of your artistic talents from your Dad. :o) Love what you do!
Got a laugh out of reading that the auto body’s family drove cars that needed body work. I am married to a mechanic. Guess who he never has time to fix their cars??? LOL! Love him anyway. 🙂
Lisa, DH is a car restorer, old and very old cars and trucks. He grew up in Milwaukee and loves the state to this very day. His guess is a Desoto or a Chrysler, possibly a Dodge, maybe 1956???? His latest complete restoration was a 1928 Ford. Wonderful! Kathy Kelley whose Daddy died Thanksgiving 6 years ago and yesterday we, the family gathered at my Moms for her 90th birthday party!
Lisa, My husband is a total car head and has been working on them for years. We recently sold our Tire Store after 26 years in business. He thinks he knows what it is but the emblems have been taken off the rear. If you can send this picture to me as an attachment, we can download it and zoom in. He says if he can see the hubcaps up close, he can identify the car. Martha C. campbell121@comcast.net
My husband says definitely a 1955 Desota base model without the rear bumper or tail lights installed. He said small tail lights were added probably from a trailer. Hubcaps appear to be from a Buick or Oldsmobile.
So very sorry to hear about Nick’s Dad. I was just looking at one of your early books a couple weeks back, All Things Primitive, that you dedicated to your Dad. I’m sure he would be so proud of his little girl!
My husband thinks it is a Desoto with a modified backend of a Packard….no big fins! Since he hit the rear-end of a Desoto in the 1950’s, he said he remembered those big fins!!
I have been surfing online more than 4 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you did,
the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
Wow that was odd. I just wrote an very long comment but after I clicked submit my comment
didn’t show up. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again.
Anyways, just wanted to say fantastic blog!
I was a winner of this contest (Karen S. comment #56). I was just wondering when I should be expecting to receive my copy of the magazine. Thank You, Karen
