Weekend projects…SBOW block 7 update…

Quilters….I want to share my finished APQ Quilt Along quilt….It was a little frustrating quilting it as I broke a tension spring on my long arm at the beginning of a row and didn’t notice it until it was time to advance the quilt….the stitches on the top were fine…but it was all funky on the back starting from where the spring broke….so black on black was fun to rip out almost an entire row…yuck!…and it was the second to last row…so it was kind of tricky…part of the problem was not to pick out the good row…I basted stitches around the perimeter of the row that had to come out with bright pink perle cotton so I would not rip out any good ones… once I figured that out it only took about 21/2 hours to rip…this is why I have someone else quilt my quilts!!! lol…..The quilting design is Royal Plumes from Golden Threads…it was a great design.  I will definitely stitch it again.

If you wanted a kit for this quilt I believe they are ready…hopefully we called you if you were on the list…sorry it took a bit to get them…we had to wait to get 20 good blacks in the store…The sashing is solid black…the border is from my new line Homestead Gathering.

Then after reading Tim Latimer’s blog….He inspired me to get back to hand quilting…so I brought my big frame up to the lakehouse to stitch…got a whole row of fans done yesterday in no time at all…a little each day and it could be done by the end of summer…

Now for the block #7  update…Randy who is doing the SBOW sent me an email while I was in MI last week stating the stem was not reversed on the pattern, he works on them as soon as they are delivered to keep up…which is good for all of us…I couldn’t do anything about it being gone so today…I pulled it out to figure it out…the wool is only 2 x 9 1/2″ so what I did was cut fusible web 1/2″ x 9 and then cut the stem with the rotary cutter, like stems in any of the previous blocks…Teri the graphic designer added the stem to the traced shapes and I did not catch this while proofing…so do not trace the stem in block 7.  Cut it at 1/4″ and then taper it down to 3/16….

Then in about 100 kits, the the gray wool for the watering can was substituted and was actually darker than the dark wool for the handle spout and top…so what we are going to do is send everyone a new 5×5 grey wool piece in block 9 it will be stapled to the out side of the package…this way you should have plenty of wool to choose from and we don’t have to worry about missing anyone…if your kit was right…you get a bonus…its just easier to do all then try to have everyone email who’s is wrong… We need to adjust the size of the cement (handle, spout and top) wool a little bigger also as it is a little tight.  If you find that things are not fitting, there is a problem…please email as you are my testers you are not bothering us!!! If you tried to get the stem on or need a little more green wool send you a small scrap if you email us…or some have said they used leftover wool from a previous block.

We are so sorry for this inconvenience…if you have any issues contact us and we will work everything out…

also need to let some of you know…

Your shipping for these blocks or anything that is shipped from our shop is a little more than just basic USPS shipping…our shipping has delivery conformation, so we can track all of our shipments…it is a little more expensive but worth it when things go wrong…and they do…we are not making money on shipping and we charge no handling.

If you signed up late for the SBOW and missed out on those weeks freebies…you can call and get the back ones…but I’d advise you to just use to your scraps because the pattern is the same in all of them….

Also the cut off for ordering Wool SBOW Finishing and Freebie kits is August 8…look at your labels….does it say Finishing kits?  If not, we don’t have you signed up…If yes…you are good no need to contact us..

If you sign up this week and next week’s doesn’t say it…it might take another week or two…we print labels once a week….So by week 12 they all should have them on if you order by the August 8th date…

Thanks again…for being part of this SBOW!!! and for subscribing to my blog…I had a blast teaching in MI last week…met a bunch of nice ladies…and they rocked their crazy stitches and wool appliqués!!!!

later…LB

I am confused on the “finishing kit” for the SBOW, is this the border or is it just the backing/binding? I’ve looked for the answer, but must have missed this.

    1. lisabongean Avatar

The finishing kit is the borders fabrics, wool appliqués, pieced inner borders and binding…:) LB

Thanks for your update on the SBOW. Although I am not doing this one, I love seeing the blog. I also love the Stitch-along and have kept up with it. Also glad you had a great time in MI…a wonderful state filled with fun people (can you tell I’m from there?? :-)) Keep up your creativity and thank the gals in the shop.

Lisa, your APQ quilt is just gorgeous. So sorry you had to rip out stitches. Ugh! But the quilt is wonderful.

Thanks for all the great advice Lisa… I love the hand quilting too, I’ve been getting back into doing it myself too. Where did you get your frame? I have a small frame (2’x3′) that’s made of PVC type of pipe which works but I’d love to have a full size frame. LOL I’d love to have the lake view to quilt and sew too! Hugs from SoCal Liz

I bought my frame about 18 years ago…it was made in Texas…Pleasant Mountain…which is no longer in business…I would search for a good hand quilting frame on craigslist or somewhere as some buy them and then do not quilt by hand any more…Grace or Hinterberg still sell nice frames…I have a new Grace that I bought for smaller quilts…still haven’t put a quilt one it yet though…but it is pretty..had someone paint it black for me…LB PS I will be in SoCal tomorrow!!!

Hi Lisa. Just a line to let you know my APQ Quilt Along kit arrived and it is absolutely gorgeous! It just so happened that I was thinking about it and was about to call for an update when the doorbell rang with my delivery. Please thank your girls for me. I can only hope mine will look as good as yours. If quilting is like cooking or baking the same “recipe” by different cooks always comes out different. lol

Oh…I am so glad….this is an awesome quilt…Yours will turn out just as good as mine…it was a fun quilt to make….I put a batting in called Quilters Dream Deluxe…it is so heavy for our Wisconsin winters…

Hello Lisa, Love your work … all of it! Do you use a template when quilting your baptist fans?

    1. lisabongean Avatar

Yes…we sell them too…they are on the site…probably under “needful things”.

      1. motifbyhand Avatar

Thanks Lisa … I am on the way!

Love the hand quilting/fans!!! I’m about ready to do a bit of it myself. I’m glad your ‘frogging’ is history (for this project!). That is one gorgeous quilt!!!

    1. lisabongean Avatar

Frogging SUCKS!!! but the quilt turned our really beautiful now that it have been fully frogged! LB

I agree and even doing it with friends/in a group doesn’t lessen it!!!! LOL! It just proves that “misery loves company”!!!!! LOL! LOL! Hugs from one (of many) who’s been there and will, no doubt, be there again!!!

Lisa – your quilt is beautiful! I think I totally missed that we could order this quilt kit! Is it still available for purchase or is it somewhere on your website to order? P.S. I am loving the SBOW this year!

    1. lisabongean Avatar

I posted way back when I was making the quilt that it can’t be kitted, that I was using my personal collection….but some insisted we make them a kit as close as we can to mine…and we did…there is a lot of yardage in this quilt…20 half yards black, 20 Fat quarters each of creams and the butterscotches…and mine is king size…I added a 3 1/2 yd border and 3 yards of black solid for sashing and binding…so that is about 26 yards total….if anyone wants a kit you can call the shop…with you information and we will see if we have enough people who want it to warrant making more kits…920-722-7233 LB Glad you love the SBOW!!

Thanks Lisa, I start my blocks the same day or the next that I get them in the mail. I have noticed the “problems” in the pattern and wools but in true quilter fashion I just make the changes as needed and go on. For example, I drew my own bird wing, I assumed the gray wools were substituted. No problems for this quilter! I know others will let you know there are issues but I can start to inform you too, I just hate to complain. Thanks for an awesome SBOW!

    1. lisabongean Avatar

Please let me know if you find anything…there is a nice way of letting someone know about mistakes and there is a not so nice…most of the time people understand…but please let me know if you find anything that looks wrong…is wrong or typos…we want this pattern to be error free when we send it out to the rest of the shops who might want to run this as a BOM… thanks for the comment…keep on stitching!!!LB

I rarely leave remarks, however i did a few searching and wound up here Weekend projects…SBOW block
7 update | Lisa Bongean’s Weblog. And I actually do have a few questions for you if you do
not mind. Is it only me or does it look as if like a few of these comments look like they are left
by brain dead visitors? 😛 And, if you are posting on additional online sites, I’d like to keep up with everything fresh you have to
post. Could you list of every one of your community pages like your twitter feed, Facebook
