Day 1…Needful Things…

12 Days of Christmas 1

Every year so far people ask…Will you please do the Juki again this year?…. so here it is AGAIN!โ€ฆ..by popular demand…and read for something we have never been able offer before at the end of this post!th1

Now I know we pretty much all have a sewing machineโ€ฆor two or three or even moreโ€ฆBut I just have to talk about the sewing machine I use 99% of the timeโ€ฆIt is my #1 Needful thingโ€ฆMost of you probably have never heard of Jukiโ€ฆso let me just say they are not new to the marketโ€ฆJuki is well known in the garment industry and are mostly industrial machines. I think I have had a Juki for about 9 years nowโ€ฆI also own 2 Berninas, 1060 and a 1530, and a couple of featherweightsโ€ฆone black and one white. I confess this to you so you also know what I am comparing to and you all know I teach all across the country and have stitched on many machines.

I bought the Juki with the intention to use it as a second machine to have set up for machine quilting my little quilts, and also so I didnโ€™t have to change the walking foot from my regular foot on my Berninaโ€ฆthat would have been nice, right?โ€ฆJuki has entered the quilt world with a semi-industrial machine for quilters. Here are a few of the features that the Juki machines haveโ€ฆall metalโ€ฆno plastic bobbins, no plastic feet, comes with all sorts of feet including 2 free motion feet and a walking foot, a larger 9โ€ณ opening between the body and the arm, so machine quilting would be easier to handle. It has a nice extension table, this is nice for retreats, I have it embedded in my table usually. The machine ONLY stitches straight. Now this might be an issue for some, but I was only going to use this for machine quiltingโ€ฆThe fact that it only stitches straight is actually a plusโ€ฆnice tension all the time, single hole throat plate . It holds large cones as well as regular threadโ€ฆIt has an automatic thread cutter, automatic needle threader , knee lift and stitches 1500 stitches per minute or something like that, in other words it is FAST.

After stitching on this machine and using it. I did not want to stitch on anything else. It โ€œpiecesโ€ beautifullyโ€ฆI didnโ€™t have to hang on to my threads at the start, the feed dogs are nice and close together and fed my little pieces in nicely. Having the single hole meant my piecing wasnโ€™t sucked down into that oblong holeโ€ฆ and againโ€ฆI could stitch, cut my thread with my foot(or there is a button, but I like my hands free to hold on to my patches) knee lift my presser foot and be on to the next thingโ€ฆI especially love piecing triangle paper on the Juki for all the reasons I just statedโ€ฆNow I know being fast really should not be an issue, right? We want to be accurate! But let me tell you, if I am stitching strips, borders or you name itโ€ฆfast is handyโ€ฆI tried going back to my โ€œregularโ€ machine to piece onโ€ฆit was almost painful!!! Just shoot meโ€ฆI loan this machine at The Gathering, but it comes with a warningโ€ฆif you stitch with it you WILL be going home with it! I think only one person didnโ€™t buy one after she stitched on it for a weekendโ€ฆlolโ€ฆThey also have updated the Juki recentlyโ€ฆI have a TL98Q, now they make a TL2010 Q1, they have updated to an LED lightโ€ฆthey have added a Turtle and a Hare button, if you want to control how fast it can goโ€ฆand they changed the foot pedal, a bitโ€ฆI love my 98 and the features they added do not make a difference to meโ€ฆso I am keeping my 98.

Here is the only con to my Jukiโ€ฆit is heavyโ€ฆbut it is all metal! You canโ€™t have metal parts and it be light!โ€ฆI think of it like todayโ€™s featherweight-but it is not light. Anyone can work on a Jukiโ€ฆit is a basic machine, it has no computerโ€ฆit just needs to be oiled and used and it is happy!

So if you are ever in the market for a machine, please check out the Jukiโ€™s and you can read all the technical words I should have used to explain it. They now have a presence at the larger quilt shows and will soon come out with a long arm, that will be most reasonably priced. I do sell the Juki 2010Q1 at my storeโ€ฆI could sell other machines but remember what I said, I only sell what I useโ€ฆtherefore I sell the Jukiโ€™s. I am placing the Juki 2010Qi on sale now until the end of the year at a special of $899-(yesโ€ฆnot a typo) including shipping. This is a great deal. We will order more for this same price as long as you order before the end of the year. JUKI In 2014 they will go back to $999.00 still a great price when you think about what you all get with this machine! Please allow a few weeks for deliveryโ€ฆwe will not charge your card until we are shipping it. Click HERE to order a machine

Last year we sold almost…50 machines…If we make it to 50 this year…one of you who purchases will get theirs FREE!!! Those odds are pretty good!!!

I will update you with numbers at the end of the year…I hope we sell 50 and I hope you WIN yours!!! ย Tomorrow Santa will post ALL the WINNERS for all the posts but this one unless we make it to 50 in one day! ย but otherwise I will post the winner of the sewing machine on NEW YEARS DAY!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and Holiday season…Lisa and the Staff of Primitive Gatherings

My Juki 2010Q is probably the best sewing investment I have ever made! Upon your recommendation, I purchased my Juki in 2012 and have loved everything about it. In 2012, I was just starting to dabble in FMQ and the throat on my Bernina was rather tight and I tended to get frustrated until Juki came to live with me.
What a difference! I have quilted up to a queen size with no problems except for operator errors like when I sewed the bottom right corner to the middle of the back of the quilt. I have a good friend that also purchased a Juki after trying mine and she also loves hers. Lisa, for the third year I have enjoyed your 12 Days of Christmas and seeing all of the useful items that will make my sewing experiences more enjoyable. Thank you for your time and generosity. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

It has been a lot of fun following along these 12 days. My first read with my coffee each morning. Now, to bake one last thing & get the car packed for our Christmas Eve travels to visit the families. Merry Christmas! I am looking forward to the new year making new things and following you on this journey we share.

I am going to talk to my Santa here tomorrow about that Juki…it’s been on my wish list since you first talked about it in your first 12 days a few years back. The price is great, and free would be even better! Kind of a guilt thing this time of year to spend on myself when things like college loans are a burden, but still …. sewing is my only vice!
Merry Christmas, Lisa, and thank you for keeping up with your tradition that we all look forward to when your heart isn’t so into the holidays.

Lisa, thanks for hosting this for us. As always you are awesome. Unfortunately for me right now I am not able to make this purchase, but it is on my list for 2015. 2014 has had a lot of downs for me I would not wish on anyone……..my love of quilting has gotten me thru some pretty rough times and made many bleak days cheery. Merry Christmas to you and your family, I know it won’t be easy for you, remember we all love you!

I bought the Juki 2010 last year and it’s a winner! I would love to have won it but gotta say…it’s great for dependability and it’s a work horse! It reminds me of my mom’s old singer. All metal and after 50 years of use it was still sewing true. Worth every penny! I would love another one for our seasonal home. The Juki is heavy so I take my light weight machine. If you buy one .. you will get your monies worth.

Lisa, thanks for another fun 12 days. It’s like the Yule calendar I used to do with my kids. Looking forward to next year’s already. Merry Christmas.

Reblogged this on Treadlemusic and commented:
This “reblog” is because Lisa says it better than I could and why reinvent the wheel??? Unlike her, I do have the TL2010Q with the updated speed control, etc, and love it for the reasons she mentions. I, too, purchased mine (in 2010) to do my fmq on but have since used it exclusively for all my piecing and general sewing needs INCLUDING the bridal gown alterations that I still take care of!!!!! Again, it is a straight stitch ONLY machine but it does it perfectly!!!!! The price that Lisa is offering on this machine is awesome (shipping included!!!!)! Although I am not a dealer, my enthusiasm for this product has resulted in several purchases among friends and those who have watched my fmq demos.

Okay, now I have some serious decisions to make. I had actually been thinking about getting a new machine just for quilting. I think you have convinced me that I need a Juki for everything. I too own two Berninas, a 12 lb. Janome for retreating, and a featherweight. Thanks for such great pricing. And I want to add thanks for your 12 days of educating us about things that will truly enhance our quality of life as we pursue our passion for quilting!

Wishing you, your family and your team a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!

That’s quite a sales pitch! You make it very tempting. But first, I need to find one near where I live to try it out. Meantime I’ll continue with my Berninas and Featherweights. However, I am hearing more and more about the Juki from other sources. Thanks for once again bringing us a great list of needful things. I look forward to this event every year. Merry Christmas!

Thanks for a fun 12 needful things for a quilter. It has been a delight to discover what we can and cannot live without. I have never heard of Juki, but will definitely investigate more about it. It can be difficult when piecing to get accurate seams and for the me the more pieces (or connecting seams) the less accurate my block is, even if I have my 1/4″ foot on. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your staff.

I usually sew on “antique machines” my newest is my featherweight (1951) and my oldest a model 90 (1927) – and they all sew beautifully. But I did want a machine for quilting, to leave set up in my quilting studio, so last year I bought the Juki. I love this machine. It sews as beautifully as any of my old machines with the added bonus of harp space! Good luck reaching 50….if I didn’t already own 6 machines…. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Two questions:

Does it come with a quarter inch foot? Does the quarter inch foot have that blade thing on it?

Will it fit in my current cabinet ( now have a pfaff in it, I have one of Tracyโ€™s Tables), and get one of those acrylic pieces that fill in the gap between the machine and the cabinet.

Okay that was more than two questions. Thanks for your help.

    Lori

    1. lisabongean Avatar

      Lori…
It does come with a 1/4″ foot…however I do not use it as i think its too big like all the rest of them out there…
I have a tracy’s table also…you may have to order a new well or adjust the one you have already and yes..order a new acrylic surround to fill the gap…
If you look at the video on the triangle paper post…that blue tape is my 1/4 guide…I layer it and cut it to 1/2″ wide …and gauge my scant 1/4″ and proceed to piece that way…

I bought my juki from you in 2012 and I love it also. I only get out the Bernina for zig zaging and such, but that is not often. I can’t get the needle threader to work anymore but that is the only problem I’ve had with it. Someone will be so thrilled to win one! Juki had their quilting machine at the Des Moines show but the saleswoman was so involved with her computerized quilting she wouldn’t stop what she was doing to let me try it, I even went to the booth twice. I’ve watched utube videos and it’s difficult to see the process, so I’ve not been able to use this ..but it doesn’t stop me from using this wonderful machine…it is a work horse, but as Lisa says…it’s very heavy…..made well and has so many great features.

I’VE decided that Santa is bringing me a Juki this year! I’m tired of fighting with the tension issues on my Bernina. The only Bernina repair shop in my town takes months to fix a machine. So you’ve got to have more than one machine, right? That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

  69. Janet O. Avatar

Last year, just a couple of weeks before Christmas, I had 4 execs from Juki corporation in my sewing room doing market research for their new longarm. They wanted to talk to people with “sitdown” models of longarm machines. Since then I have been curious to try their machines.
One of the men was from their American offices and the other three were from Japan. If that wasn’t a surreal experience, I don’t know what would be.

I’ve had so much fun reading your 12 days needful things and now it is time to place and order! I work at school so today is my first day off for Christmas break (we don’t go back til Jan 5!). My husband and I slept in, had coffee and sat by the fire and watched the news; I did a little knitting. Do the best you can this year for the holidays Lisa. You’ve given so much to so many people, we wish all the Peace and Joy for you your heart can hold. Blessings this Christmas and always, to you and all the people you love the most.

Thank you so very much for sharing your “Needful Things” with us each year….I have definitely found a few things that I need! The Juki sounds like an amazing machine! I would love to have a new sewing machine someday….I am using the $150 Brother machine I bought at Walmart when I started quilting 3 years ago. It is an okay machine for starting out but it has it’s limits….I would love to do FMQ and be able to sew more than 3 layers of fabric at once….so frustrating! I hope that you, your family and the PG team have a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year!! Thank you for all you do!!

Thank you, Lisa, for the amazing information you’ve shared again through your twelve days of “Needful things”. I learn as I’m exposed to new products. Your Juki sounds amazing and it’s nice that you’ve found the machine that makes your piecing come out perfect. This is a very generous gift you are giving to some lucky winner.
Best wishes to you and your family during this holiday season, and good luck in your new California adventures in the upcoming year. Waiting to hear your amazing “grandma” stories in the near future.

Love your 12 Days of Christmas for the past three years. I have learned so much! Wish you peace and love in your holiday season as we will all be thinking if you.

If anyone is on the fence about the Juki, go ahead and take the jump. Everything Lisa and everyone else says is true. The way is sews is ideal! You will be very happy. There are no Juki dealers around where I live and I could not test it out before I got it, but it wasn’t necessary. You will love it!!! Just Do It!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Her price is great too!!!

This machine sounds like the machine I should have bought. I bought expensive plastic. I am so dissatisfied. I like all the points you discuss here. I don’t there are any dealers near by but would love to test drive one.

Oh how I would love to have a Juki but I would have no room for it right now. I may have to search out a dealer one of these days to test drive one. Merry Christmas! Itโ€™s been fun learning about all of your needful things.

I really think I want this machine and would had purchased it in 2012 when you first talked about it in the 12 days of Christmas but I had just purchased a well I’m not going to say but another brand that there is something I’m not happy about with it in August of the same year. I to want a machine that will go faster than what most machine will do that’s a problem I’ve had since I was use to sewing on older machines growing up and industrial machine that my grandmother had that would really go fast. I think I’m just going to have to make this purchase and then just sell one of my other machines to justifie it. Thanks Lisa for all u do the 12 days of Christmas which I saw some other things too I need. Merry Christmas!

Lisa, I have loved they 12 days posts and have even bought a few items you talked about! I sure wish I could purchase the Juki right now! That’s quite the generous offer your making too. I’ve seen some good things about it and the way it sews. Also, I do believe I remember reading in Linda H’s Quilted Pineapple blog she bought one from you and loves it too, with both you and her saying you loved it I know it must be awesome.

Lisa — you have “SOLD” at least one Juki today — to me! Can’t wait to click the box and ‘add to cart’. You are a hero to thousands in the quilting world — count me in that group. Loved meeting you at the Village Dry Goods Retreat in 2013 and have been stitching your great ideas for many months. Kudos to all your Primitive Gatherings crew. I know this time of year especially hard for you, but know your loyal followers have you in our hearts. Sending wishes for a holiday as you want it and hope for a strong and satisfying 2015.

Merry Christmas to you and to me! I’ve decided this year is the year. I have two Berninas –a very expensive one that I bought about 10 years ago and a 300 series that I take to my weekly sewing group. They are nice machines, but they eat my small piecing projects unless I use a starter fabric, even then the feed dogs are so wide they slip unless I sew very slowly. Come January–when this machine arrives— I’ll sew like the wind. I never pieced small blocks until I became addicted to your designs. I also am addicted to wool applique!!!! I remember my Grandmother saying something about idle hands being the work of the devil— is that the reason I have a project going by every chair??!!!! Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.. I’ll be looking forward to reading about your adventures. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

I am very interested in the Juki machine and that is an awesome price. I want to be able to do my own free motion quilting. I have 2 Brother machines-an embroidery machine and a baby brother which is also an embroidery machine. I have never really done much embroidery and am mostly interested in quilting. I was looking at the new Brother Dream which is very expensive. The Juki sounds really good and everybody seems to like it. Would I be able to teach myself how to use it?

I purchased the TL2010 Q1 a year ago and really love quilting and piecing on it. The only problem is that the needle threader broke and I have to get it fixed. Otherwise, I have never regretted my decision to buy it. With the acrylic insert, it fits beautifully into my SewEzi table.

I really like all the nice features on the Juki—maybe I’ll ask Santa for one next year! I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
