I have spent the last two days with a wonderful group of ladies from the Surfside Quilt Guild in San Clemente….yesterday’s workshop was held in beautiful Capistrano Beach..we had 24 eager students ready to learn more about wool applique! Our project was Tulip Baskets. Everyone of my ladies were a joy to be to spend the day with, especially 90 year old Betty who was so grateful she was still able to participate in class and so thankful to her “younger” quilting friends who take her to and from all the quilting events.
I also stopped in to the Temecula Quilt Guild meeting on Wednesday night to say hello and talk about the shop opening! They seemed to be pretty excited!
Today we are on a mission to find tables for our classroom for the store…wish us luck as I am pretty picky…Luke will be working on entering more fabrics into our system he has 300 bolts in already and lots more to go….will keep you updated.

Loved seeing this post! I so wish I could take a class from you! Again, I’m sad this shop isn’t on the east coast, but we used to live in CA when we stationed there back in the 90s and I know the draw! 😊. Anyway, just curious…do you have your students draw the design on the background before you place the wool pieces? It looks like it in the picture….if so, what do you mark it with? No this is a clear overlay to help aide in placing the shapes once they are cut out and to get them into the exact position before ironing if that is what the student desires.
Oh, how I wish you had a store here in the South! In fact, right here in the Chattanooga area would be perfect 🙂

I am also curious about the marking on the beige wool part of this runner. Do they trace a template and what is used to draw the black lines? Thanks

See my comment above… This is a clear overlay… You line up the edges of the mat with the edges on the overlay… Then lift it up place a shape, position it… Then place the next one lifting the overlay for getting exact placement.
When all shapes are positioned it is ironed with lots of steam and little presses with the iron!

Go see the “tables” at Orange Quilt Bee. The owner’s husband built them. Electrical outlet is contained within, etc. it’s the best workshop area I’ve ever seen in a shop. Great shop, too, with friendly, expert service.
It looks like 24 new woolies are born! I recently taught a friend how to do wool applique and this was the pattern she chose. It was such a good one to learn with because it allows for the practice of all the basic stitches and techniques and you only need the background plus 3 pieces of wool and a couple of threads. Not a big investment for a beginner. Her project turned out beautifully with yellow tulips and it was finished in no time.
Lisa is such a great pattern writer and I really appreciate having the images for the pieces as well as the placement diagram included in the pattern. Instead of template plastic which can be expensive, I have traced the placement diagram onto transparencies (remember the old overhead projectors in school?) or I have also used the thick, clear plastic that they sometimes put over tablecloths in restaurants-you can cut off however much you need and it is cheap. Use a sharpie if you want it to be permanent or if you are not going to make the pattern again you can use a non-permanent wipe-off pen. Lisa thank you for taking the time and care to make your patterns so user-friendly. It takes extra time and paper to include a placement diagram as well as the pieces but it is so important and makes your patterns well worth the cost.

I sure hope when I am 90 years old my eyes and hands still work so that I can still be stitching away. I am so excited that you are opening the new shop. You will only be two short hours away. Road trip yeahhhhhhh! I work for an CPA, but I think I will be able to get a Saturday trip in before we get to crazy. See you at the Road2CA.

This brings back memories of 2 years ago when I tried my first wool applique project under your capable guidance. Spent last weekend at the Village Dry Goods retreat with Stacy West doing more wool. Came home to prep the Mini Warm Winter Blessings quilt. About time I got that made!

We sure enjoyed our workshop with Lisa—-learned so much about wool and thread and of course all the shortcuts to make the sewing go so much faster. I have to learn to make my blanket stitch bigger and wider so I can work as fast as Lisa. Thank you for coming to our guild and we will see you in the new store.
