Just thought I would share how we starch now…,I used to spray and iron all my fabrics dry… Now we starch…,and hang them to dry…press them when dry and then proceed to cut out the quilt… They become nice little stiff pieces to stitch with… For much more accurate piecing… Two jelly rolls starched and drying in my the work studio…
I’m stitching at the Lakehouse today… Nick caught his first fish through the ice here today after two winters of never getting anything!

Wow to the starch operation! I’m a newish quilter, so it is really interesting to see the behind the scenes things quilters do. A lot of bloggers only show the glamorous stuff, but this is how you get there. Great space to work in too. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Lisa, love your idea. So you buy spray starch in a can and not sizing and spray and let dry? I didn’t know we should use starch. I am new to quilting. Love your idea. Nice fish Nick!
I’m curious … do you find that the strips shrink when you starch them? The last time I tried to starch and iron a jelly roll, the strips shrunk to less than 2.5″ and I had a hard time with the pattern.
Hey there – you teased us with the starch thing – so… how do you REALLY starch?! Spray each strip individually, then hang up? Sprayed on a towel or something like that? We want the deets!! (And thank you for them in advance!!) 🙂
BTW – I keep meaning to ask you this – the red basket quilt that you are using in the weblog header photo – what quilt is that? I’m assuming it is one of yours, but have not found a pattern online for it… I LOVE it!!!

Love the starching tip, I used to do that with my Air Force uniforms when I did them myself I’d spray them until they were saturated and then after they were dry iron the daylights out of them… and yep they could stand on their own!!! What kind of fish is it that Nick caught (you can tell I don’t know much about fishing)? I’ve only seen people ice fishing in the movies and in Maine when I was stationed up there… LOL I always just thought it was really a place for the guys to hang out and have a beer not that any real fishing took place.

Hi Lisa! Sounds fun! I thought of you today when we took our boat to Lake Elsinore. So close to PG yet so far. I would NEVER be able to convince all my boys to make a pit stop there. When will you be back in CA? Also, I think there is some confusion about the starching. Would you elaborate on why to starch and how it’s different from the spray sizing which is what I thought you used? I have a jelly roll project I want to start but need to know about this first. Do tell….. 😉
