What are you doing on the first day of the new year? My answer is…tidying up my sewing room…organizing my projects/commitments…planning the next year…I love the beginning of a year…I love the excitement of what this year will bring…happy that I am here for it…happy to be able to do what I love…now…in my planning I have made some changes in the last couple of years that I am now finally seeing the results…After my kids were out of High School is when I really started upping my game as far as teaching/traveling, shows, shop and so on…but when Jace (Feb ’15) was born…I decided I wanted to be a big part of his life…so I changed the amount of traveling work I was doing in the future…well the future is 2017… 2018 I took the whole year off from traveling/teaching…My 2017 calendar is front loaded in the beginning but after May…not much is happening…I can work just fine from home and not have to run around the country…I know..I love it..you know I love to teach people…but we will figure out a way to do it from home…and in 2019 I will take on a few commitments but not like before…so that is my biggest plan for 2017….
I also need to get healthier…get this traveling weight off and get back to enjoying activities that I have loved my whole life…I also need to enjoy the fruits of working so hard for 10 years…and enjoy what I have… and the people in my family, co workers and friends…You don’t have much of a real life when you are constantly “on the road”…people forget to invite you because your always gone….you don’t go out for coffee with a High School friends…you don’t get together with old co-workers from a previous job…I know to some of you this might seem trivial…but as you get older…what really matters…people do…So lets take care of ourselves…we have too many projects to complete…lets move a little more…eat a little better and less…then we can hang out for many years to come!!!
I promise I will blog more, teach more and create even more now that I will be staying home more…just hang in there with me…it will be FUN! We’ll figure it out…
Now…I have a pretty big announcement to make…I know some of you were confused about how to win the Juki…well…In the post it stated that the winner would be chosen from all of those who purchased one…I think this is only fair…all the other 11 days anyone could have won regardless, we even sent to winners in other countries…So with out dragging it out any longer…the winner of this years 12 Days of Needful Things winner of the Juki 2010Q is….Geraldine Sherwood from Indiana!!!! Please email Amy…ahoefler@new.rr.com with your details!!! Congratulations Geraldine!!!
So those of you who didn’t win…you really still won…you will love this machine like no other…when it comes, open it as soon as you can…get familiar with it…( I know that the worst part) but I promise you there isn’t much to learn…its all real basic…and stitch something with it!!! By the end of that project you’ll be like why, why, why did I wait so long….and you will be in love all over again with quilting…I am currently working on this little baby…machine quilting it on my JUKI!!!
Now…one other thing I need to do…is to figure out where to go on vacation in 2017? I love having something to look forward to…
Do you have something to look forward to? If not…think about this…We still have a couple of openings (about10) in our North Carolina Retreat that is coming in March 2017!!! It’s gonna be here before you know it!! So come join us…I’m working on a few things for it right now and will be showing them soon!
Here is the info for you to take a peek at…you need to do something different something that will bring YOU joy…you won’t regret it!!! This place is really swanky!!! We would never be able to afford this place “in season” so lucky for us…we don’t quilt outside…but we will still be able to enjoy lots of other things NC-outerbanks has to offer!
Lisa, I really, really like that you took the time to look at your life and dial back to what makes you happy. As a teacher for 22 years it was always a struggle to add just one more thing because you wanted the best! Retirement has found me doing what I love, stitching & taking care of my health. It’s worth it girl! You go! 🤗
Glad to hear you are gong to take time for yourself! I have always thought that most of us do not do that enough. We all try to keep going and doing more and in the end I don’t believe we are any better off.
Enjoy your “resolutions” you definitely deserve them!
Happy New Year Lisa! I am so glad to hear that you are going to take care of yourself more. That means that we all benefit from your creativeness. I look forward to taking a class from you.
Congratulations Geraldine! Sorry I didn’t win, but still looking forward to receiving this machine. I’ve been pondering getting one for 4 years! I’m glad I finally took the plunge! Happy New Year Lisa, it’s been a joy to follow along on your quilting journey.
Great plans for family, friends and yourself. Croatia is a nice destination or Hawaii. I am heading to Santa Barbara in a few days from Australia for a holiday. Have a Happy 2017

Lisa, your new list of priorities is a great plan, family & friends are what really matter. The photo of the quilt you are working on in this email is beautiful, is there a kit available for purchase? I would definitely want to purchase if there is a kit available. Thank you & Happy New Year.
Happy New Year! I was so excited when my phone rang and it was Lisa calling to tell me I won the Juki. I started crying. My granddaughter was in the car with me and she said my face just started to glow.
I can’t thank you enough from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful gift of kindness that you have shown.
Your generosity through out the year is like no other Thank you again and Happy New Year to you and your family! Let’s make it a healthy one!
Love
Geri
Ten years of doing anything at that intensity will get to you!! I have a two year old grandson & I absolutely love being with him. Watched him last night, and the fireworks in our neighborhood started up. It truly scared him. So we got out the CD player and put on music. Once he started changing stations and dancing , he was fine!! They are just small memories of raising his dad!! He asked where they went last night. I said, to a party. Then I said, we are having our own party!! He said, where’s the cake!! Oh boy, another typical male child!! I sense that your surgery was more intense than you let on. Just glad to know you survived & will be around for “little man.” Better put on your running shoes to keep up with him. Happy and Healthy New Year!!
Lisa, I would love to do a retreat with you and Primitave Gatherings but the one in March is a bit pricey. Will you be doing any retreats closer to home (home being Wisconsin or close by)?
I and my girls are totally looking forward to stitching with you in North Carolina ! We are so excited from WA state! We feel so lucky to have this opportunity.
I too have been working on cleaning and reorganizing my work space and prioritizing all my projects…overwhelming!! What about doing a biweekly or monthly podcast in place of your travel commitments…it would be a great way to continue to share your new work and talents with all of your quilty friends.
Happy New Year and thank you – while I was busy shopping the 12 days of Christmas- I saw the spray can handle on the starch – oh my gosh what a great idea 💡- you are the best thanks again Kathy from Hale Iowa
Happy New Year! You gave us all some great advice! Slow down and take care of ourselves, family and what is important. I’m so thankful for taking a class with you this last year in Baytown, Tx. I’m taking care of my mother who has dementia and am still able to do handwork and sew while spending many hours sitting with her or on doctor visits. I love working with the wool and feel blessed to have this in my life. I don’t like to be idle with nothing in my hands. God bless!
Happy New Year!! Congratulations Geraldine! I will be at the retreat in March….can’t wait! My thing to do every New Years Day wad to clean my sewing room….been doing this for 30 years now. I look forward to it every year. Brings peace to me.
Congrats Geraldine! I am so excited for you. Happy New Year everyone. I am still saving for my Juki. I think next year will be my year to purchase one. Thank you Lisa for all your sales, and please keep offering the Juki sale! You will never regret spending time with your grandson. I have a 13 month old son and am expecting a second baby any day (I am actually due today). I stay home with them even though I could make a lot of money working, but we choose for me to quit my job and stay home. I am so thankful that we made this choice and I am able to take care of my children full-time. It is a lot of work thought! But it brings me a lot of joy. It just means it takes me a longer time to save for a sewing machine :).
I would love to attend the retreat in March but won’t be able this year. My quilting buddy and I will both be turning 70 this year and have committed to a cruise to Scandinavia in June. Today I listed my UFO’s for the #apqresolution 2017 challenge and I’m staying home waiting for my Juki to arrive! Happy New Year everyone.
Lisa,
I love the flags, one has an anchor…….I can’t find them to order, are the kits available?
I have a Grandson in the Navy and he would love them! I’ll be waiting to hear,
Carol in Florida.
Congratulations on the decisions you have made for your future. I totally agree that you need to stay home, enjoying that beautful new home you have, spending time with your grandson, while baking cookies together!
I bet you will have a quit on the frame, and hand stitching wool everywhere!! You are a very talented, hard working teacher, and I feel so blessed that I could take your class when you came to Alabama. I will be looking forward to see what you have in store for us, and I have always enjoyed reading your blog. Instagram is really nice, but nothing is like your blog.
I wish I could drop everything and come to the retreat in March, but I’ll be 38 weeks preggers. I think that’s cutting it a little close. I just wanted to say don’t forget us east coasters for other planned retreats. There are a lot of us who can’t travel too far your way, but can fork out the $$ for this retreat if it’s close enough.
Awesome! And I just wanted to say I love your perspective and go with the flow attitude. It’s a boon in these crazy times. I don’t know how many times I’ve told my kids, “It’ll all work out in the end.” It’s good you’ll be taking some time for you and your family and friends in this next season.
