My youngest son Jake (little Man’s Daddy) has been bugging me for over a year to get a tattoo with him…so we scheduled our mother & son tattoo appointment at Neenah Electric Tattoo with Jake Davel, on St. Patty’s Day.
We knew we wanted a Dragonfly and we tossed ideas around, for a little while back and forth. We settled on this one. Jake had his drawing/rendition of this tattoo all drawn up when we showed up, we just needed to figure out how big we wanted it.
Now before you FREAK out we did not get it in the same spot, no full back tattoo for this MiMi. I got mine on my foot and Jake got his on his knee. We have a history with some dragonflies on our excursions, so this is our symbol. I love the water colored style tattoos that are so popular now.
I may have taken a few pics and videos. So enjoy if you have never been tattooed or if this is not your thing, you can feel free to delete now. Tattoos are not for everyone.
MOTHER & SON TATTOOS: DRAGONFLIES Jake went first and is shown here after it was finished with his protective film over the top that we have to leave on for 72 hours…
Jake placed a transfer drawing on my foot to see if that is where I liked it. Nope, I had him move it, see the first one? Do you also see how I made him place it with my shoe on so it would not be half covered when I wear my flats…
Now here it is with the outline finished. It is a little bigger than I have anticipated but Jake said if I went smaller I would loose the detail. I love the detail in this tattoo and that is why I picked it, so I am happy.
Jake was amazing, talking to me asking me things to distract me from the pain, but I am pretty tolerant so I was just fine. The tattoo studio was very eclectic and very clean. He spent lots of the time cleaning and prepping, the artwork in the studio was amazing, lots to look at, retro furniture and just very comfortable.
Now the color being added…Two days later and here is what it looks like. Yes, it is supposed to look like a mess, it is healing and when that layer of film comes off it will be beautiful in about a week!
When they are all healed up Jake & I will have our picture taken together. It took about 2 hours and it was $200, for the both of them. I can’t wait til that film comes off, it is really nice though. I can shower , wear a sock and I don’t even know it is there.
Your mother/son tattoos rock! I’ve always wanted one, but chicken out..good for you for not! I’m 69 years young this year…may celebrate my 70th with one!
Love it and how neat you did it with your son. It is a beautiful tat…maybe you should add that as an optional activity at future retreats! But be honest how much did it really hurt??
What a great memory for the two of you. You are braver than I am. M6 kids got their first tattoos when I was sick with Breast cancer, they figured if They go5 breast cancer ribbons I would not be pissed. You have to pick your battles.
Way to go Lisa!!! It’s beautiful!! I got a small freeform heart done on my right ankle on my 50th bday (so 13 yrs ago). My daughter took me to her guy on Capitol Hill in Seattle. I had thought about it for a year and it had to be done “on the day” or not at all… because I did it to 1) protest the number; and 2) to do something no one would EVER expect Mama Pris to do! It took about 20 minutes. Cost $50. Hurt like … well, you know! But I love it and have enjoyed it and had lots of fun with it. Will I get another? Probably not… but then… never say “never!” 😊
I love it. I have 3 tattoos. Did it hurt getting it on you foot? With all the bones in the foot I would think it would hurt a lot. I have one on my back and when they got down on the tail bone I thought I was going to leave imprints of my fingers in the chair lol.
Lisa – I loved sharing with you and Jake… I had such a relationship with my son Mike…. it is so sad …. he showed up at work ( a commerical plumber project manager )… pulled out his plans….and had a massive heart attack..,at the age of 55 – three years ago….which is not right…but we do not set our plans… I have been thinking so hard about getting a tatto …. Mikie…on the inside of my wrist….something I did not mention …i have no tattos….everyone (even the artist) said that is a tender spot….I am now 82 but I think this is something I need to do…. thanks ….
Omg that is so awesome!! Me and my kids, and grandkids, are going to get a ‘family’ tattoo. I want an acorn. I’ll have to share when we are complete!
Thanks for sharing, yours is beautiful!
Super cool! Love the water color affect. My daughters and I have tossed the idea of getting matching bees on somewhere on our feet. Maybe the time is getting closer!?!
My 3 daughters all got the same little swallow tattoo in the same place on their feet. They knew I didn’t approve so they called their Dad to meet them for a drink afterwards to show them off. They took a picture of their feet together and framed it. I have to say it’s kind of cute but tattoos are not for me.
It is said that a dragonfly represents a lost loved one. When you see one , a real one, it is a sign of a angel. It’s interesting that Jake picked a dragonfly for both of you. A lost loved one is following both of you 😍
Love it.
Went about 20 years ago with my daughter to get a butterfly tattoo. I went first —— mistake ——— daughter chickened out. Still, I am glad I did. Your tattoos are very pretty.
I had to have tattoos when I went through radiation and those little dots hurt,. But I love your dragonflys. My daughter has been bugging me to get a tattoo with her. You have inspired me to “maybe” do it.
Hi Lisa, WOW! I’ve always been curious about the process. I love the design, and dragonflies. What a special way to share with your son. Thanks for sharing! Hugs, Jakey
About ten years ago my sister and I had permanent make up tattoos. Eye Liner, Eye Brows and Lips. We were so excited…no more makeup but in a year’s time it was all gone 🙁
Thank you for sharing this experience Lisa. How neat. My son and I have always talked about getting matching tatoos. It would be the mouse from the book “Good Night Moon”, thats on every paige of the book, At the age of 4 he pointed it out. He’s now 21 and we have not yet gone through with it, Thanks for the encouragement!
