If you’re not familiar with my new fabric line, “Starlight Gatherings“ you are in for a treat! Many of you know I live out in the country, which means that it gets pretty dark at night. The lack of city lights means much brighter stars and a dark, wide-open sky. The view of the night sky is absolutely amazing at my place, which is why it was the total inspiration behind my new fabric line. Let me take you through this gorgeous collection piece by piece!

The first quilt design in the book is called, “Asteroid.“ Finished, it measures 74 1/4″ x  84 7/8″. This quilt features a star pattern and uses all of the blues in the line, and one cream. It reminds me of the way the stars seem to twinkle on a really cold, and clear winter night. I have a feeling we might be heading for one just like that tonight, considering it’s only about 5ºF at the moment.

“Galaxy,” is also in all creams and blues, and features a really neat looking gradation from darker blues in the center, to lighter blues out toward the edge. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something you can do in a short amount of time. The simple 2″ square design makes this quilt an excellent pick for quick cutting and stitching.

Galaxy was technically designed with a border, but I personally don’t like the way it looks that way, so I opted to go without it. I also did a two-fabric version of this quilt, so if that’s more your style don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Galaxy measures 84″ x 84″ with a boarder when finished. With no boarder it will be 72″ x 72.”

“Off Limits“ is a simple, yet larger quilt that would make an excellent beginner project. It uses all the different blues and creams in the Starlight Gatherings collection. I think this design is really cool! This quilt is definitely inspired by one of the antiques that I have in my personal collection. Blue and white is my favorite color combination and I just love finding inspiration from older historic designs. “Off Limits“ measures 90″ x 90″ when finished. This quilt has at beautiful, 108″ wide, no-piece backing.

This quilt is also available as a smaller version measuring 45″ x 45,” which perfect for a small lap quilt or baby blanket. This size is also great for hanging on a wall for display in your home. Unfortunately, we do not have the smaller version kitted at this time, due to the fact that we aren’t able to get pre-cuts yet. Those should be arriving by the end of March.

Up next we have, “Shooting Star.” I love how it reminds me a little bit of a meteor shower. The stars seem like they are coming straight for you! “Shooting Star“ is a fun pick for anyone who loves working with half-square triangles. This design is also a replication based on one of my favorites in my antique collection. It’s a very large quilt measuring 96″ x 96″ when finished, so it would be perfect for a larger bed or couch.

If you love flying geese like I do, “South for the Winter“ is for you! This quilt is one of my favorite designs in the collection because it’s unlike anything I’ve done before. I enjoyed working on it because it felt different and interesting, and like something new for a change. Not to mention, it went together nicely and was really fun to do overall. Finished size on this one is 83 1/2″ x 83 1/2″.

“Star Gazing“ is as beautiful as it is fast and easy. Larger and more simple pieces makes this  90″ x 90″ quilt easier to accomplish in a shorter amount of time. This work of art would look absolutely stunning displayed on a bed or couch, or even laid out over a larger rustic dining room table. The design on this quilt actually reminds me of a larger version of a past baby quilt project I created called, “Blue Monday.“

If you’re into more tedious, detail-oriented projects, “Starry Night“ might be for you. The pattern is based on 1/2 square triangles, and is designed to be a four block quilt with a finished size of 84″ x 84″. If you need a smaller piece for something like a lap or baby quilt, this could also be done as a one block version as well.

“Stars Aligned” is definitely one of my favorite quilts of the entire collection. I might be a little bias… I mean you all know how much I love stars, and this design is full of them! With both white blocks and blue blocks, this piece really utilizes all the different shades of blues and creams included in the “Starlight Gatherings“ line. It really captures the color pallet of the icy winter season and makes perfect home décor for any room of the house.

At 64″ x 64,” “Stellar Nursery” is the second smallest project in the book (after the smaller 45″ x 45″ version of Off Limits). I really love the look of this little quilt. I wanted to use a background that had a medium value to it, which creates the visual effect of a subtle change in color from the background to the foreground. I just love the way that looks… I think it turned out absolutely amazing!

I named “Strobel” after my good friends Jim and Darci Strobel. Darci does a lot for us around here so I thought naming a quilt after her is the least I could do. I also thought Strobel sounded like a great name for a star either way, so I went with it! This project might look like a lot of work but this is a very simple and straightforward strip pieced quilt that’s great for beginners. It is designed as a two-fabric project, but you could easily take a Fat Quarter Tower and do a scrappy version of it as well. Finished size is 74 1/4″ x 84 3/4.”

Have I mentioned that I love scrappy quilts? “Twilight Zone” is what I like to call, “controlled scrappy.” This is yet another quilt inspired by old world style and technique. Hand appliqué is used to form the Drunkard’s Path – a classic design typically made with all curved piecing, instead of the typical straight lines and angles commonly seen in most traditional quilting. These curves create movement within the design, creating a circular or weaving pattern throughout the quilt. 61″ x 72″ is the finished size on this one.
