Hey, welcome back! It’s Moda Blockheads time again. This week we’re up to Block 10, “Autumnal“ by Chelsi Stratton. Chelsi is part of a mother-daughter quilting and design team. She is a stay-at-home mom who enjoys using her creative side to design patterns for her Etsy shop, fabrics for Moda, and writing her own quilting blog. She is also passionate about nature, music, and fashion, which are the things that inspire her style today. As the daughter of an avid quilter and pattern designer, Chelsi is someone who has always loved the creative process. You could say working with fabric and design within her career was obviously inevitable.
“Autumnal” is one of my favorite MBH4 blocks so far! The word Autumnal represents all things characteristic of, or occurring in Autumn – which of course is a season I love to heavily celebrate every year (who doesn’t love harvest time?!?). If you haven’t already figured it out, this geometric design resembles a maple leaf. Though it seems a little strange to be stitching something with an Autumn leaf theme in mid-spring, depending on your fabric selections it could also easily resemble a flower. This block is done with larger pieces and half-square triangles, making it super easy to assemble (I recommend using Primitive Gatherings half-square triangle paper which you can get by clicking HERE). It’s also the perfect block if you want to get some practice in on your flip-n-sew corner skills!
For my version of “Autumnal” I’m continuing to use “Ochre,” a bright orange Bella Solid paired up with a mid-gray tiny print on a light gray background, and a black floral print on a dark gray background for the contrasting pieces – both from my Urban Farmhouse Gatherings II line. If you’re still contemplating fabric choices for this quilt-along and decide you’d like to do yours like mine, you can find everything you need on our website! Well everyone, it’s time for me to get stitching. This rainy Wednesday won’t be going to waste – that’s for sure. I have a full day planned with a few different on-going projects to work on in my studio. I got a lot finished yesterday during our Sit & Stitch Gathering, which was awesome – there was a great turn-out! We had a wonderful time as always, the food was amazing, and there was plenty of fun, laughter, and creativity to go around.
Sit & Stitch Gatherings are an open stitch event held every month at The Gathering, typically on Tuesdays (dates vary – this is not a weekly event, please check the “Events“ area of our web page for upcoming dates by clicking HERE). Day and evening sessions are available. You can bring your machine or hand stitching projects – anything goes! One of the things I love most about Sit & Stitch is the variety of projects that come through the door. So much inspiration and creativity!
If you’re having trouble with a skill, or you just need a little bit of motivation, come to Sit & Stitch! There is plenty of great advice to go around – you’re among friends. Plus, we feed you! LOL If you want to learn more about Sit & Stitch, click the button below for more information!
