O’ Say Can You Sew – Clue # 5

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you had a fabulous weekend. I know many of you are anxiously waiting for today’s O’ Say Can You Sew Mystery Quilt-Along Clue #5 release, so let’s cut right to the chase! As soon as you see Clue #5, the whole reason behind all that triangle paper I’ve been recommending will become perfectly clear! Basically, you’re going to be making 1,152 half-square triangles (just a few…), and then sewing them together to create 128 9-patch half-square triangle blocks. Don’t let this clue scare you if you’re not the greatest at half-square triangles. By the time you’re done, you’re going to be a master! Ready to give it a shot? All you have to do to get going on Clue #5 is hit the link below for the full instructions and printable PDF!

I am making all of my half-square triangles blue and white, and of course scrappy. If you are opting for a not-so-scrappy look and prefer a bit of control, think matching sets of four. Why sets of four? Because a little birdie told me that four of the 9-patch blocks miiiiight just be going together in the next clue – hint-hint.

By now you should have figured out that triangle paper is going to be your best friend for Clue #5. If you still need to get your order for triangle paper placed, you can stock up on my custom designed PG Triangle Paper in a variety of sizes on our website. For this project you will need two packages of 1″ Finished Triangle Paper, which you can find directly by following the link below. Feeling intimidated when it comes to using triangle paper? For some really great tips and advice on how to use it correctly, I highly recommend watching my Triangle Paper Tutorial where I show you how to cut fast, yet accurate half-square triangles in a short amount of time. Click HERE to watch!

Sticking with the red, white, and blue motif but starting to run out of scraps? No problem! We still have fat quarter bundles in stock that will be perfect to supplement your stash. There are blues and whites in bundles of 12 fat quarters for $30.00 per bundle (that’s two FREE!). We are currently no longer offering reds in these special OSCYS bundles due to low stock, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you’re all caught up. You will only need blues and whites from this clue forward.

Remember, Clue #5 is available as a FREE download now through Monday September 5th, 2022. After that, it will be available to purchase on our website for $5.00. If you’re just joining me on this Quilt-Along there is still plenty of time to catch up! Links to all released clues are listed in the O’ Say Can You Sew Clue Archive, which can be found in the main menu at the top of this page. New clues are posted on the first Monday of every month. Once the current month’s clue is posted, the prior clue is no longer free but can be purchased for a small fee of $5.00. For more visual learners I will also be posting a video tutorial of each clue on my STITCH with Lisa Bongean YouTube channel every month, so be sure to check that out as well! You can watch the Clue #5 tutorial by hitting the STITCH button below!

Alright, that’s it for now. I’m keeping it short and sweet because I will be back here on the blog later today with another post all about our big Hogs for Heroes bike and flag quilt recipient reveal, so watch your in-boxes for that! If you couldn’t tell, we are super excited to be part of this awesome contribution to help injured and recovering WI veterans, and we want to share this experience with you as much as possible. I’ll have lots of details all about it here on the blog later today. In the mean time, enjoy Clue #5 and I will see you then! ~Lisa

Thank you for this fun Sew Along! I’ve been working on my little half square blocks and while they are small and there a lot of them.. it is going a lot faster than I thought! Your triangle paper works amazing and makes it very easy. I will definitely use it for future projects. Can’t wait to see how this quilt will come together!

I just started sewing my squares together and the picture on this blog looks different than the photo on the pdf . Which one is correct or does it matter. This one shows the dark blue triangles to the right but the pdf shows them pointing to the left.

Hi Nanci! Sorry for the delay in answering. It’s been a zoo around here! To answer your question, it shouldn’t matter. Once you get Clue #6 you will understand what to do with Clue #5!
