Hey stitchers! Hump day is back already, which also means… So is MBH5! Moving right along, Laurie Simpson of Minick & Simpson brings us the sixth release in the MBH5 series. known for her classic style, timeless fabric collections, and intricate quilt patterns, Laurie offers up a traditionally designed block she calls “Celeste” to the Blockheads 5 sewing table. This block features two design elements that we haven’t seen in any of the previous MBH5 blocks so far: square-in-a-square units, and quarter-square triangles (block two did have split QSTs, but this block has actual full QSTs).

Since I know you’re curious, my block piecing techniques for “Celeste” are the same as the instructions show – for the most part, anyway. The only thing I changed was B and C to 2 3/4″ and then cut them in half twice, and E to 2 3/8″ and then cut them in half once. The reason I did this is because I really hate wasting time and effort by making units oversized and then having to trim them down. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I would much rather save the time by using the correct math and make them true to size to begin with. Not feeling confident in your math skills? No biggie. If the designer’s way works better for you – great! Do whatever makes you the most comfortable.

Laurie is out of town this week, so unfortunately there is no blog post directly from her to follow along with, but don’t panic! You can still get the full pattern, instructions, and hot tips on how to tackle “Celeste” by visiting the the Blockheads 5 Main Page by clicking HERE. And don’t forget – if you ever need any of the past MBH5 blocks and can’t remember where to look, you can always find them posted on my archive by visiting http://www.lisabongean.com and clicking the “Quilt-Alongs” tab.
In case you didn’t know, I’m using Bella Solid Silver (9900 183) for the background of my quilt, and Bella Solid American Blue (9900 174) consistently throughout the entire thing. The rest will be done with selections from the same soft, muted collection of Bella Solids that we put together for this project called “Sundown.” The entire collection is available for purchase on our website by clicking the buttons below!

As always, if you have any questions regarding this block please feel free to leave me a comment here on the blog! You can also visit the Blockheads 5 Main Page for more information on Moda Blockheads 5 and how it all works by clicking HERE. I also recommend hooking up with the virtual Blockheads community for even more support by checking out their Official Moda Blockheads Facebook Group.
