Hey, everyone! Pop quiz time… What do you get when you mix a bunch of talented Moda designers, a mountain of fabric, and a quilt-along that’s more fun than a barrel of rotary cutters? Moda Blockheads, of course!
For the last five years, the Moda Blockheads Quilt-Along has brought together quilters of all ages and skill levels, and has created a community that’s as welcoming as it is inspiring. Each year we dive into a fresh new quilt project as a group, sharing plenty of laughs, encouragement, and inspiration, all while stretching our creativity to the limit—and 2025 is no different! Starting this week on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, Moda Blockheads 6 officially begins!
As always, I’m super excited for the new Blockheads QAL to start! I’ll admit, I was supposed to talk about the kick-off to MBH6 during my LIVE show last Thursday, but it pretty much slipped my mind as soon as I reminded myself not to forget to bring it up. Ope—that’ll happen! Especially when there is so much going on here at PG simultaneously—like the release of my latest new fabric line, American Gatherings III, that just recently became available for pre-order!
How will you make your Blockheads quilt this year? Even though it won’t be delivered until this December, I’ve decided to do my quilt in reds, whites, and blues in honor of American Gatherings III‘s debut! Here is what the quilt will look like in a mixed basics colorway… Do you think it’ll look even sweeter in our nation’s patriotic colors? I do!

What are your thoughts on this year’s layout? I’m really loving how this quilt showcases a mix of block sizes and styles—including an extra-large, beautiful star block smack-dab in the middle. You know how I love stars!!! The bold center block also features my all-time favorite unit—the half-square triangle—which, when paired with larger single triangles, forms a unique and striking pinwheel I can’t wait to make!
In case you’re not familiar with Moda Blockheads, let me tell you how it works. The Moda Blockheads Quilt-Along is a yearly free QAL series from Moda Fabrics that brings together some of your favorite designers and their talents. It’s a chance to explore different styles and techniques working at your own pace—all while learning, experimenting, and having fun!
The official start date of MBH6 is this Wednesday, May 21st, 2025. One block a week will be released every Wednesday going forward from May 24th through November 12th, with a big grand finale on November 19th, 2025. You can download the latest block patterns on the Moda Inspiration + Resources Blog by clicking HERE! There you’ll find photos and links to the social media channels and website for the designer of the week. You can also download block patterns on the MBH6 Information Page at http://www.lisabongean.com under the QAL’s tab by 5:00 p.m. CST each week as well for your convenience.
Planning to participate and think you might want to make your quilt in reds, whites, and blues like I’m doing? FYI, I will be using two different gray Bella Solids for my background fabric. They include three yards of Bella Solids Steel 9900 184 (instead of the white in Moda’s original design), and four yards of Bella Solids Graphite 9900 202 (instead of the Navy in Moda’s design), which you can find on our website by clicking the buttons below. In addition, for those of you who are going with this colorway but just so happen to be short on lights, I’ve got you covered with curated Fat Quarter bundles that include 18 light fat quarters for only $72.00. As for the darks, I don’t have specific bundles made up at the moment, so you’ll need to pull those from your own stash and mix and match from what you’ve already got on hand.
Ready to get started? As I mentioned, the QAL doesn’t officially begin until this Wednesday, May 21st, 2025. While you’re waiting for the big day to arrive, be sure to join the Moda Blockheads Facebook Group, where thousands of members share photos of their progress, hot tips, and encouragement throughout the quilt-along. You can also follow along and share your progress on your favorite social media platform using the hashtag #ModaBlockheads6! That being said, I especially encourage everyone to post photos of your progress in my STITCH with Lisa Bongean Facebook group as well, which you can join by clicking HERE if you’re not already a member.
Curious about MBH6 but not sure if you’re quite ready to make the commitment to a weekly quilt-along? Be sure to join me this Thursday at 1:00 p.m. CST when I go LIVE on my STITCH with Lisa Bongean YouTube channel! I’ll be officially kicking off MBH6 here at Primitive Gatherings, along with giving you a progress report on all my other works in progress as well. You can tune in by clicking the STITCH icon below! Come for the quilt talk, stay for the inspiration and shenanigans—and probably a little bit of chaos too, but hey! That’s part of the reason why it’s always so much fun… See you there! ~Lisa
