Hey, everyone!
I have good news for all of you who follow my Monthly Mini Quilt Series… the September Mini Quilt is finally here! Yes, I know — September has already packed its bags and is long gone, but sometimes my quilting schedule, my good intentions, and the actual calendar don’t exactly see eye to eye. Because of that very phenomenon, last month’s quilt ended up being put on the back burner while I was trying to be in two places at once. Between teaching at The Gathering and heading off to h+h Americas right around the time it was due, there simply weren’t enough hours in the day to get ’er done. Needless to say, by the time I got back home to my drawing board, October was on deck and already waiting in the wings!
Scheduling issues aside, I promise this absolute stunner of a mini is totally worth the wait! Meet Nine Autumn Stars. Finishing at just 22″ x 22″, this little quilt might be considered a mini, but it certainly doesn’t skimp on the intricate piecing! With nine large star blocks made up of square-in-a-square units, flying geese, and a whole lot of tiny half-square triangles, there’s plenty of action packed into this mini quilt project!

In my opinion, the detail that really makes this design sing is… you guessed it — the half-square triangle border! I really love the way it creates a neat-looking sawtooth effect around the entire perimeter of the quilt. And when I say there are a LOT of half-square triangles in this quilt, I’m not kidding! The border alone contains more than 300 tiny ½” HSTs. That’s a whole lot of little triangles, my friends! That said, I highly recommend my custom-designed Primitive Gatherings ½” Triangle Papers to make your life easier while tackling this project. Triangle Papers, combined with starching your fabric ahead of time, will help keep those small pieces from misbehaving—and help keep you from losing your mind… theoretically, anyway! Whether you’re a fan of the HST or not, this mini is an excellent opportunity to sharpen your piecing skills, resulting in an impressive little quilt that’s worth every ounce of effort you put into it.
Have you ever noticed how sometimes things have a way of working out, even when they don’t go according to plan? The Nine Autumn Stars pattern may have arrived a little later than intended, but the Nightfall fabric line by Andover that we used to kit this project couldn’t be better suited to the season! Kits feature a beautiful mix of orange, black, and gray that feels right at home in the heart of autumn. Maybe this mini was just waiting for its moment!
Do you love Nine Autumn Stars like I do? You know the drill… patterns and kits are available both in the shop and online on our website by clicking the button above!

I hate to say it, but as long as we’re on the topic of late Monthly Mini Quilt Series pattern releases, I might as well put this out there while I’m at it — October’s release is going to be just as fashionably late as September’s. Why? For the same reasons! With Primitive Christmas right around the corner, I’ll be the first to admit that I am totally swamped with things to get done in time for the big event. Can you forgive me? It’s definitely coming, but I also know it will most likely not arrive until early November. Sad, but true — either way, I know you have plenty to do in the meantime, and I promise you will be the first to know when it arrives. Just remember… patience is a virtue — especially when you’re waiting for a new quilt pattern to release!
That’s all so far for this week, but I can guarantee there will be more from where that came from by the time Thursday rolls around and we go LIVE on my YouTube channel. In fact, that reminds me to remind YOU that it’s the last week of my six-week birthday celebration! Don’t forget to check out this week’s birthday specials by clicking the button below!
