Hey, everyone!
What’s the secret to keeping an energetic, adventure-loving gal like me out of trouble? Keeping me busy with stitching projects, that’s how! Between traveling, teaching up a storm both in and out of state, and celebrating my 60th birthday all month, needless to say, I’ve had plenty to keep me on my toes lately. In fact, despite still being pretty pooped after a long weekend of birthday shenanigans, I was back at The Gathering bright and early Wednesday morning, teaching my Intro to Punch Needle class for the first part of the day, and then my Intro to Rug Punching class that afternoon, which is always a lot of fun. Everyone did a great job with their projects, and hopefully they enjoyed spending the day with me and learning something new as well!
Taking classes that aren’t necessarily quilting specific is an important reminder that there are many other ways to turn our love for fiber into something unique and creative that goes beyond traditional quilting. Exploring different techniques can not only spark new ideas but also inspire us to look at the materials we already use in a fresh, new way. That said, going on a crazy creative adventure every time I start something new isn’t always the goal. Sometimes I just want to chill and do something easy and fun while my brain relaxes and just kind of goes along for the ride. That’s why I love collections like my friend, Val Krueger’s All About Quilts Fat Quarter Series — they’re exactly what I need when I want to enjoy some time at my sewing machine without having to think at quilt science level.
That type of easygoing enjoyment is exactly what makes the latest addition to Val’s Fat Quarter Series yet another simple but stunning masterpiece that I’m excited to make. With a straightforward design and just 12 coordinating fat quarters, Flip Flop will be a fun and approachable project that lets me enjoy the process rather than requiring me to get caught up in complicated piecing or fussy details. Sounds like the perfect weekend project if you ask me!

Despite the fact that Flip Flop is beginner-friendly and easy to do, this little quilt turns out to be more impressive than you might think. I mean, who knew a little switcheroo action in fabric placement could make such a difference in the overall appearance of a quilt? That’s pretty much the basic idea behind it… the blocks start with a familiar nine-patch layout, but they actually turn out to be a bunch of rebels. The addition of a small cross at the center and four larger corner pieces gives them an edge and a unique look all their own. Things get even edgier when you start switching fabrics around, and suddenly you’ve got a second version of the same block. Pretty cool, right? Trust me, it’s really nothing fancy… just a simple idea that creates a lot of visual interest — and with no tricky triangles, curves, or fussy piecing to force you into thinking too hard!
To kit this baby, we’re pairing Flip Flop with Sweetwater’s Chilly fabric collection. With its playful winter prints, festive colors, and mix of cheerful red, white, and green patterns, the Chilly fabric line brings plenty of personality to those regular old nine-patch blocks. Between the traditional stars, gingham plaids, holiday lettering, and classic red and green prints, there’s no shortage of fun little details to discover as this adorable and festive quilt comes together.

Not too big and not too small, at 64″ x 64″ Flip Flop is just the right size to finish in time for Christmas without having to sacrifice every spare minute from now until the big day! This little cutie will make a great addition to your holiday home décor, whether you drape it over the back of a sofa, fold it across the foot of a bed, or display it on a quilt ladder alongside your other seasonal favorites. It would also make a wonderful handmade gift for someone special who’s been extra good this year… A little holiday sewing with a finish line that doesn’t feel a million miles away? Now that’s my kind of gift!
It’s crazy to think that gift-giving season is only just weeks away… how is your list looking this year? It will be stocking stuffer season before we know it, and Jess is already getting ready to work her magic with a whole bunch of goodies that will make shopping for your quilty friends easier than ever. I’ll have more to share about that in a future post, so be sure to watch for that in the next couple of weeks. Know what else is coming in a few weeks? PRIMITIVE CHRISTMAS!
Yes, indeed — it’s getting to be that time of year again! If you don’t know what Primitive Christmas is, I can only describe it as the biggest event of the year! Thursday, November 19th through Sunday, November 22nd, 2026, when you make a minimum purchase of $40 (total does not include tax or shipping), you will receive FOUR FREE PATTERNS and ONE FREE KIT, just for shopping with us!

That’s not all… on top of the FREEBIES, we’ll also have make and take projects to try, and our spectacular Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Quilt and Fiber Arts Show will be available to view. Final details on Primitive Christmas are just about finished but are still not 100% set in stone, so I’ll do another post closer to the event to really break it all down for you. Stay tuned to the blog, Facebook, and my LIVE shows for more!
Alright, everyone — time for me to switch into Weekend Mode. With overnight temperatures soon expected to dip below freezing, tomorrow will probably be our last chance to get the boat out on the water before it’s time to pull it out for the season. I’m not quite ready to admit that boating weather is over, but like it or not, winter is waiting in the wings! Are you ready? I’m not, but something tells me Crazy Ol’ Mother Nature isn’t going to give us a choice. Stay warm and I’ll see you all next week! ~Lisa
