Autumn Crossroads: A Fresh Take on Flannel by Matt Syverson

Hey, everyone!

Do you ever look at a stack of fabric and wonder how someone else might use it? I love seeing how different designers put my fabrics to work and much to my delight, this month’s Weekend Edition quilt gave me a chance to do just that! After meeting fellow designer Matt Syverson of Matthew Syverson Quilt Company at Quilt Market this year, I sent him some of my flannels and gave him the opportunity to use them for a design of his own, and let me tell you… he certainly didn’t disappoint! The result is his quilt, Autumn Crossroads — a stunning seasonal beauty that puts my flannels center stage in a whole new way!

Autumn Crossroads features four oversized “leaf” units with plenty of interesting angles and unique-looking shapes worked into the piecing. Color-wise, the combination of rich red, burnt orange, olive green, and deep brown gives it a traditional autumn palette that’s balanced by a softer, more neutral cream background.

Finished, Autumn Crossroads measures 60½” square, which is a great size for a wall hanging or to drape over the back of your favorite loveseat, but don’t feel like you have to stop there! If you’d rather make it a little larger, you can easily add borders to the top and bottom to kick it up a few notches. Don’t you just love having options? I sure do — especially when it means getting a little more mileage out of a design I really like!

As I mentioned, this quilt was designed with flannel in mind — specifically, one of my latest Primitive Gatherings fabric lines, Flannel Gatherings Basics. Have you seen the variety of prints in this collection? From traditional plaids and checks to houndstooth and herringbone, there are 32 fabrics in a range of earthy neutrals, deep blues, rustic reds, warm greens, and golden browns. They’re all 100% cotton flannel, and the collection even includes 108″-wide backing options, making it easy to carry those flannels right around to the back of your quilt!

If you’re chomping at the bit to put some of these flannels to work for you, we’ve got Autumn Crossroads pattern and kits available as we speak, both in the shop and on our website. Just remember — since Matt designed this month’s quilt and it’s not an official Primitive Gatherings brand pattern, it’s only available from us in printed format and not as a downloadable PDF. Need backing? Don’t forget — you can also save 20% on your backing fabric when you purchase it at the same time as your kit. Now that’s a deal!

As far as homework for the weekend goes, that’s not quite all I have for you. Just a friendly reminder that the Menasha Bluejays are still in the running for T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Contest and that $1 million grand prize (if you’re not familiar with the story or missed my earlier post, you can catch up by clicking HERE)!

Voting is open through this Sunday, November 8 2026, and you can vote once every day! Every vote brings Menasha one step closer to rebuilding Nathan Calder Stadium after the devastating EF3 tornado. So that brings me to the question… did you vote today? NO??? What the heck!? Click the button below and get it done!

Now that your homework has been assigned, I can officially get the heck out of here for a couple of days! As always, have a safe and wonderful weekend and try to stay out of trouble. Take care everyone, and I will see you soon! ~Lisa
