The next “needful” thing that I can’t live without is my “snips“.
I mount this right on my sewing machine, so I always know where it is…I use this tool in place of a scissors when piecing. ย When you are chain piecing patch after patch, you have to cut all the chains apart, I reach for this snips because it can be easily picked up and set down, no fingers in the holes…the blades are curved, so I stretch out my chain and begin snipping them apart, with the curved blades pointing toward my threads between my patches…it is much quicker and I feel that I will not cut into anything because it is a short snip and not a cut with a scissors, in which ย I would have to pick up the patches and then cut…I can just snip these laying on my sewing table…like shown below… I mount my snips on my machine with a magnet…now I do not stitch on a computerized machine so I can mount it this way…I will talk later about my machine…Oh, I forgot…I have one of these mounted on the handle of my long arm machine too…hopefully all you long armers out there already know about this…
If you are interested in purchasing this “snips” it is again conveniently linked below to my site, however I have no problem with you supporting your local quilt shop and purchasing there. ย If you do not have a nice local shop and want to purchase from me…you will receive a 25% discount off it now til the end of the year. ย Please understand that your order may take a bit. ย We do not know how many we will sell? ย It might be 5 it may be 50, hopefully it won’t be 500, I don’t think my supplier would have that many!!!…lol, so we may have to order this for you. ย We appreciate your patience and we will ship your order as soon as we have them in our store, if we run out of what we have in stock. ย Thread Snips order here
You may wait and place an order at the end of the 12 Days…the discounts do apply until the end of the year. ย See I do read your comments!!!
Now for the winner of yesterdays Day 12 post…is Comment #81….Cindy P…I picked the number 81…it was my father’s race car number.
Your prize is shown here…please send me your mailing address so we can get this ready to be mailed…PS ย I have decided to mail all the winners their prizes at the end of this event…One trip to the POย instead of 12ย ! Stop back by tomorrow to see what else you may “need” to help you be a better Quilter!ย REMEMBER to leave a comment to win a prize!
I love that strawberry pincushion!! Do you have a pattern for that? I have a pair of those snips and they are wonderful. They sit right in front of my machine. Instead of ordering something every day, I will wait until the 12 days are over. Thanks for all your nspiration!
The snips seem like they would be very easy to mount to your machine. I do not like searching for my scissors when I need to snip threads. Great little tool!
Wow! Lisa, I feel like a real pro because the 4 x 8 ruler and snips are also two of my favorite tools. I nearly panicked the other day when my new kitty found the snips and batted them off the table and waaaaay out of my reach under a cabinet. A yardstick with magnet taped on it rescued me and the snips–maybe I had better order another pair!
Funny you mention race cars. It was racing that brought me to your store many many years ago when my husband was a crew chief for an ASA team and we went to Kaukauna! I loved traveling with him. I would spend my extra time checking out all the nearby quilt shops. Unfortunately we only made it to your area once, but it was a great find!
Love your blog. I am looking forward to all your ideas of necessary things. I need to look at my LQS for the snips. They look like something I could use.
You’re right, those snips are very handy! I use them with my embroidery machine to snip off long threads. Hadn’t thought to use them with regular sewing, but now maybe I will. ๐
Yes, snips are a wonderful tool…I have been using them for years. I have two pair…one for use at my sewing machine and the other for use at my cutting table. Love them.
Wow, I thought I’ve already bought every quilty thing possible, but you’ve already had two things I don’t have! And they both look like excellent additions to my collection. I’m worried about the next ten days – this could get expensive! LOL. Thanks for sharing with us.
I just bought a pair of snips the other day at Joann’s as they were on sale ( my local quilt shop does not carry them). I hate them. They do not snip at all. You have to hold them a special way.. BOO who has time for that. I will have to put these on my list of things to buy after christmas. PS… I made your Pasta dish that you posted back in September… Family LOVED it!!!!
These snip are wonderful! I have 4 of them one each sewing machine and at the cutting table to trim embroidery designs. Only concern I have about mounting them on a sewing machine is if you have a machine with a computer chip in it the magnet will erase the memory
I don’t have a snips, I will have to check them out closer. It may be an item that I need ๐ I love the handmade strawberry pin cushion. Is there a pattern for it?
I have these snips and keep one in my embroidery project and one at my machine. They work so well. I have a question for you. What do you use to mark on dark wool. I have a Santa wool project that needs some embroidery and I can’t seem to find anything that will mark the wool. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Love your shop!!
Know LB is a business woman but knew her before that as a teacher and shop employee. LB was then and continues now to share what she knows and has. LB inspires others to be better not only with quilting but to be a better person all around. LB not perfect (none of us are) but sets a good example in sharing….thank you. Blessings upon you and your family.
Well, let’s try again, shall we? I wrote a comment to you and lost the whole thing. My computer skills are few and far between. I and my friends are in love with all the wonderful designs and patterns you create, Lisa. Thank you very much. Your on-line site is one I browse through a lot. I have lots of your projects in cases and can’t decide which one to do sometimes. I have a bad habit of starting and not always finishing. I don’t have those snips but I do have a great collection of scissors. Keep up the great job you do with designing projects. I look forward to them all. I am your devoted fan, Patricia D. Roberts
I have Gingher Thread Nippers that I use. I think I’ve seen these snips but never paid close attention to find out what they were or what they were used for. Think I’ll have to check these out again….maybe something I can’t live without and didn’t know it!
I love when you offer a good tool, I also have this nad I love it. I dont remember who makes it but i got it at a quilt sore that is no longer in business–how sad..what a beautiful pincushion you gave with the ruler you do great things with those nimble fingers. Thanks again for the chance to win
We must have been on the same wave length today! As I was driving to work I was pondering what to put on my stocking stuffer list for my family. I was considering putting on some type of small snips that I could have close by when I am at my machine. You have saved me a trip to my local fabric store to look for this type of ship. Now I will just add PG’s website for my husband so he can order it for me. Actually, it will be my daughter doing it for him, as she says “he is computer illiterate.”
what a great idea. You are so smart to think of this. Merry Christmas. Love everything about you,…….shop,… fabric….. patterns ……….. You are the greatest.
Thank you so much for doing the 12 Days of Christmas, love everything that you do. I get my Evelyn’s Album quilt back in a couple of days as I have someone quilting it for me. Can hardly wait to see it.
I have several pairs of the snips and I love them! They are one of the handiest tools I have. Thanks for the 12 days of Christmas hints! A fun thing to read everyday.
I haven’t seen one of these before, or if I have, didn’t know what it was! Looks interesting and useful if one does a lot of chain piecing. Like your disclaimer about the magnet and computerized machine!!
Totally have to go get a magnet…not to worry my machine is not computerized either. That little strawberry pincushion is adorable…going to go make one for myself.
I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!! ย IT IS MY LUCKY DAY!!!! Seriously….good thing I am at work or I might be screaming ๐ Thanks so much for the chance to win these fantastic items. ย It will give me something to look forward to after the holidays! ย Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hi Lisa, I just started using the snips about two weeks ago and I LOVE them. I’ve had them for a few years and found them in my tool drawer and decided to try them. What have I been missing! If I could just find a way to mount them on my Bernina, I would be a happy camper!
You have such good ideas! Someday I hope to get the chance to visit your shop in person…and yea I do frequent my local quilt shops almost as much as yours!
Thank-you, Lisa, for your tried and true recommendations, and for encouraging us to shop locally, when possible! The snips look convenient and would be handy at all times!
So here’s a tip for computerized machine owners who do not want to magnetize their snips to keep them handy: use a bungee type cord and hook it to the bobbin winding spool or on the hinge of your sewing cabinet … anything nearby … the bungee stretches to your project and is always handy. (I use one from my old casino card … a place I don’t care to go to but take my 83 year old mom every so often as she loves to go and ALWAYS WIns while I count every loss as yardage lost!). So stay home and buy notions from Lisa or go to the quilt shop … not the casino… You can probably get a bungee more cheaply elsewhere!
I don’t believe I have seen a “snips” like this and it looks like a great tool for machine piecing. Thanks for the info. I’m waiting for day 12 to place my order!
Love the idea of the snips. I am always misplacing my scissors and that is very frustrating to waste time looking for them when you are on a roll sewing.
I’ve never seen the “snips”, having them on my machine would be great!! I can never find my scissors, even though I put them in front of me everytime I sit at my machine!!
I have a pair of snips like these – they’re perfect for my needle punch projects cuz I never have to worry about cutting the fabric when I cut close…..
I had to smile when I saw today’s needful thing — I have these snips and talk them up to everyone in my quilt group. Probably my number one favorite thing to keep at my machine!
I have a pair of these snips but never really used them much. Didn’t think about them being that handy. Sometimes you just need someone to point out the possibilities.
I have never seen these snips before! I think I might need these!! They look like they might be useful for embroidery also. I didn’t even know I needed these things before ๐
The snips look like the perfect stocking stuffer. I may need more than one so I have one at home and one with each machine. Cannot want to see what else I cannot live without. Thanks Lisa!
Yesterday was my first ever blog response….here goes my 2nd; never used snips but think I will have to try some. Adorable strawberry pincushion you lucky winner. happy holidays everyone
Wow, your snippers are so light compared to mine. I worked in a shoe shop for a very short time many years ago, so that is where i got them. They do have the hole for one finger similar to scissors. Can’t wait to read your next post for day 10!
I have a pair of these snips and love them. One thing I like about them is that you can cut with either hand. Also like your idea of putting them next to sewing machine, I keep mine with my hand applique project that I’m working on now.
I have one pair in my travel to classes basket. Why don’t I have one by my machine? I don’t know. It seems obvious now. Perhaps I will win one. Nice thought.
I have never seen snips like these, they sound pretty handy as opposed to small scissors. Thanks for extending the 25% off until the end of the “12 Days.”
Went to my local quilt shop to buy the 4 x 8 ruler, she had every size but that one, so will have to order from you. Can’t wait to use it..Looking forward to your 12 days..I have a snip and use it everyday
[…] # 16 …Nick picked #16 it was his baseball number in school/college….Susan G.December 14, 2012 at 10:38 amย ย I see those in the fabric shops and just walk by. I guess I didnโt really know what to use […]
I’m so lucky to have a sister who is always finding great quilting tools for me. The snips were a gift long ago and still use them. Think they may be perfect for anyone with range of motion problems, i.e. arthritis. So easy to operate and as you say without the finger holes much quicker to use. Now, how about a way to make more handy for those of us with computerized machines?
