Day 11…Needful Things for Quilters

11 daysThe next “needful” thing that I can’t live without is my “snips“.

I mount this right on my sewing machine, so I always know where it is…I use this tool in place of a scissors when piecing. ย When you are chain piecing patch after patch, you have to cut all the chains apart, I reach for this snips because it can be easily picked up and set down, no fingers in the holes…the blades are curved, so I stretch out my chain and begin snipping them apart, with the curved blades pointing toward my threads between my patches…it is much quicker and I feel that I will not cut into anything because it is a short snip and not a cut with a scissors, in which ย I would have to pick up the patches and then cut…I can just snip these laying on my sewing table…like shown below… I mount my snips on my machine with a magnet…now I do not stitch on a computerized machine so I can mount it this way…I will talk later about my machine…Oh, I forgot…I have one of these mounted on the handle of my long arm machine too…hopefully all you long armers out there already know about this…

Wow! Lisa, I feel like a real pro because the 4 x 8 ruler and snips are also two of my favorite tools. I nearly panicked the other day when my new kitty found the snips and batted them off the table and waaaaay out of my reach under a cabinet. A yardstick with magnet taped on it rescued me and the snips–maybe I had better order another pair!

Funny you mention race cars. It was racing that brought me to your store many many years ago when my husband was a crew chief for an ASA team and we went to Kaukauna! I loved traveling with him. I would spend my extra time checking out all the nearby quilt shops. Unfortunately we only made it to your area once, but it was a great find!

I just bought a pair of snips the other day at Joann’s as they were on sale ( my local quilt shop does not carry them). I hate them. They do not snip at all. You have to hold them a special way.. So here’s a tip for computerized machine owners who do not want to magnetize their snips to keep them handy: use a bungee type cord and hook it to the bobbin winding spool or on the hinge of your sewing cabinet … anything nearby … the bungee stretches to your project and is always handy. (I use one from my old casino card … a place I don’t care to go to but take my 83 year old mom every so often as she loves to go and ALWAYS WIns while I count every loss as yardage lost!). So stay home and buy notions from Lisa or go to the quilt shop … not the casino… You can probably get a bungee more cheaply elsewhere!

I have never seen snips like these, they sound pretty handy as opposed to small scissors. Thanks for extending the 25% off until the end of the “12 Days.”

Went to my local quilt shop to buy the 4 x 8 ruler, she had every size but that one, so will have to order from you. Can’t wait to use it..Looking forward to your 12 days..I have a snip and use it everyday

I had a magnet with a small scissors on my old machine but haven’t put one on my new one…yet! Thanks for the reminder!

I’m so lucky to have a sister who is always finding great quilting tools for me. The snips were a gift long ago and still use them. Think they may be perfect for anyone with range of motion problems, i.e. arthritis. So easy to operate and as you say without the finger holes much quicker to use. Now, how about a way to make more handy for those of us with computerized machines?
