Hey everyone! Have you had a chance to watch the virtual tour of the 2022 Red & White Quilt Challenge Quilt Show at The Gathering? As promised, Kali has put together a nice little video for those of you who were not able to make it to The Gathering to see it in person, which I am thrilled to say was posted last week and is now available for your viewing pleasure on my YouTube Channel by clicking the STITCH button below! Follow me as I walk you through the entire show, which includes over 150 stunning red and white quilts submitted by quilters from all over the U.S. – all hung on display in our 10,000-square-foot retreat house for the Christmas season!
If you recall, the driving force behind this challenge was the fact that I love red and white quilts so much that I thought I should celebrate them in a way that would really show their stylish designs off properly. I wanted to do something similar to when the American Folk Art Museum in New York installed 650 red and white American quilts into the historic Wade Thompson Drill Hall back in 2011. I mean, just picture that! 650 red and white quilts, all hanging in one 55,000 square foot room. Though not quite as large as the Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with its abundant wall space, super tall ceiling, and spectacular lighting, The Gathering is also a fabulous place to show off your work. That’s why I had the ultimate goal to fill it with red and white quilts by mid-November, just in time for the Christmas season – and thanks to all of you we did it! I want to give a huge shout-out of gratitude to all of you who participated in our first quilt challenge at Primitive Gatherings because without you, there would have been no show!
As much as I would have loved to give a winning ribbon out to every single one of you that sent an entry in for the show, 150 is a lot of ribbons! That being said, in case you weren’t aware we did have nine prize categories that were presented. Prizes were awarded for first through third places, honorable mention, best of show, best workmanship, judge’s choice, viewer’s choice, and most creative. Congratulations to the well earned winners. Spectacular work!
This was the first time we’ve ever done a challenge like this at PG, and I am thrilled to be able to say it was a success. Of course, with it being our first juried quilt show there were a couple of growing pains along the way, but honestly nothing major. In fact, it was so much of a success that we can’t wait to do it again! My team and I have been discussing the details for our next challenge at length but aren’t quite ready to put them out to the world yet, so please bear with us. I do know that we’ve decided that the theme for the 2023 Primitive Gatherings Quilt Challenge will be Red, White, and Green, so start thinking about how you might want to tackle that color combo! I also know for sure that it’ll be even better this time around now that we’ve been through the gauntlet once, so if you’re thinking about joining the challenge – do it! You won’t be disappointed and you might even win some moola!
If I’ve piqued your interest about our next challenge but you’re still unsure if it’s for you, I will be talking about it more this coming Thursday during my LIVE show at 1:00 p.m. on YouTube, so make sure you set your reminder for that! We’ll also be talking about the upcoming Sue Spargo spring retreat at The Gathering, Dragonfly Dreams finishing kits, our new cotton scrap bags, and more! Hop on and join us – and just like here on the blog, remember to leave me a comment during the show for a chance to win a little something nice… I will see you there! ~Lisa
