Welcome to the Moda Blockheads 6 at Primitive Gatherings Information page! Moda Blockheads 6 is a a block of the week quilt-along hosted by Moda Fabrics. It includes FREE weekly block releases exclusively created by a group of Moda’s top designers—including me! The main goal of this annual free quilt-along is to find new ways to inspire quilters of all ages and abilities. Instead of a traditional mystery quilt where we all end up with the same final layout, this year we’re making a flexible, skill-building series where YOU decide how to put your blocks together. You can turn them into an individual quilt, a set of smaller projects, or something totally unique. No rules here—just creativity!

Blockheads 6 features 24 incredible Moda designers, each with something unique and incredible to offer. Every week, a featured artist will share their block contribution along with personal tips, tricks, and ideas for how they’re planning to use it.

HOW IT WORKS:

The official start date of MBH6 is Wednesday, May 21st, 2025, which includes an introduction week. One block a week will be released every Wednesday going forward from May 28th through November 12th, with a big grand finale on November 19th, 2025.

BLOCK SIZES:

Unlike last year, MBH6 will have different sizes for different blocks (instead of each block in two different sizes). The majority of the blocks will finish at 9”, while there will be a few 18” and even larger blocks!

SETTING OPTIONS:

There will be at least 5 different settings to choose from! Several of the Blockheads 6 designers will have setting options, and the Moda team is also providing settings.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:

Because this is a sampler quilt with different setting options, your actual fabric requirements will vary depending on how scrappy you would like to make your blocks, which setting you decide to use, whether you prewash and/or starch your fabrics, and other variables.

To make the just the 25 blocks in MBH6, we recommend starting with about 30-35 assorted print fat quarters and 3-4 yards of background fabric. You may need to add more fabric depending on the setting you choose.

COLORWAYS:

Several of the Moda designers are making their Blockheads 6 blocks in Bella Solids; Moda Basics, including Grunge, Thatched, Eyelet, and Spotted; and Ruby Star Society Basics, including Starry and Speckled! If you’d like to work with Bella Solids and Basics for your Blockheads 6 blocks, Moda recommends selecting about 18-20 different Bellas and Basics and getting a range of 1/4-yard to 3/8-yard cuts.

I decided to do my quilt in reds, whites, and blues in honor of my latest fabric line, American Gatherings III‘s debut in December, 2025! Here is what the quilt will look like in a mixed basics colorway… Do you think it’ll look even sweeter in our nation’s patriotic colors? I do!

If you like the idea of red, white, and blue and think you might want to make your quilt the same way I am, just a heads-up—I’ll be using two different gray Bella Solids for my background fabric. They include three yards of Bella Solids Steel 9900 184 (instead of the white in Moda’s original design), and four yards of Bella Solids Graphite 9900 202 (instead of the Navy in Moda’s design), which you can find on our website by clicking the buttons below. In addition, for those of you who are going with this colorway but just so happen to be short on lights, I’ve got you covered with curated Fat Quarter bundles that include 18 light fat quarters for only $72.00. As for the darks, I don’t have specific bundles made up at the moment, so you’ll need to pull those from your own stash and mix and match from what you’ve already got on hand.
