KT & Friends Retreat

Bennington, Kansas – June 22-25, 2021

It’s time to kick into high gear preparing for our June KT & Friends Retreat in Bennington this year. After missing last summer’s gathering, we’re so excited to see our returning quilters and all the new faces who are joining us.

Robert and Joy have been fielding questions at the store, so I thought I would answer them here for everyone.

What you need to know:

In April, you will receive an email from KTQ with questions about who you’re attending with, where you’re from, are you open to rooming with another quilter coming alone, etc. Please make sure Robert has your email address. We will also send a supply list of basic supplies needed for all workshops in May.

Covid-19 – We recommend each quilter receive a Covid vaccine before attending our retreat. Please bring a mask. Mask and social distancing requirements will be determined based on CDC recommendations at the time.

Hotel/Transportation – Please make your own travel/hotel reservations. Airports are in Wichita, Kansas and Kansas City, Kansas.

Sewing Machines – We are unable to provide sewing machines for rent. Please make arrangements with the KT Quilt Shop if you wish to ship your sewing machine to the store to arrive before the retreat.

Payments – Robert will be available for you to make credit card payments for the retreats beginning April 1st. You may call the store 785-488-2120 Tuesday thru Friday 10am-5pm CST, Saturday 10am-3pm to work out the details. We are happy to split the payment into two charges, if you prefer  – 1/2 in April, 1/2 in May.

Registration – June 22 – 11-12:30pm – Each classroom group will be assigned a color. You will register/unload during specific times based on your color group. Don’t worry, everyone will be in their places before the workshops begin at 1:00pm.

Workshops – Workshops begin at 8:30am each morning Wed, Thur, Fri. Doors open at 8am. You will be in two workshops with each instructor over the 3 days of the retreat for a total of 6 workshops plus project kits. We will each teach a lap size quilt project and a small Make ‘n Take project. We hope you’ll have three things finished before you leave. So fun!

Sewing Time – Each color group will have free time one afternoon (Wed, Thur or Fri) to sew or shop as they wish. We are allowed to be in the school until 9pm each day Tues-Thurs.

Food/Drinks – Food/drinks will be available in the kitchen only. We will have coffee, tea and water available all day beginning at 8am. You must use the travel mugs provided for drinks to avoid spills in the classrooms/halls. No food is allowed outside the cafeteria. Please eat breakfast, if desired, before arriving each morning. Lunch & dinner will be served.

Shopping – Each designer will take a turn sharing their quilts in a trunk show before dinner each evening. The KT Quilt Shop will be open throughout the day except during meals. Lisa and Debbie will have items for sale after their trunk shows and during classes.

Unloading/Loading – We will have at least one teen to help unload/load your sewing machines & supplies.  Aleece did a great job at the first retreat and is looking forward to seeing you all again this year. Tips are appreciated.

Shipping – If you need to ship any goodies home, we are happy to provide a box at the KT Quilt Shop. Robert  will send your items and charge your credit card for actual shipping costs.

Okay, now that all the business is taken care of, let’s see what you’ll be making at the retreat!

Here is a little about Jen Kingwell if you do not know her yet!!

JEN KINGWELL

Jen has been lucky in her life to have had two wonderful careers. Her first love was midwifery and she felt honoured to be included in life’s most precious every day miracles. She doesn’t know where her love of fabrics came from, her mother was not a sewer but she does know she has always been fascinated by colour and pattern. Like many she tried different crafts and stumbled into quilting over 30 years ago and there she has remained. An interest became an obsession which then became her career, including teaching and designing. She has owned quilt stores for 15 years and currently owns Amitie Textiles in Melbourne Australia www.amitie.com.au and Instagram @amitie_textiles. The store offers an eclectic mix of fabrics including Japanese, Liberty of London, linens from Europe, french toiles and a wide collection of patchwork fabrics of course including Moda!!

She describes herself as a traditional quilter with a modern twist. Loves scrappy quilts and the more fabrics she can use in a single project the happier she is. In her perfect world she would hand stitch everything but with today’s busy lifestyle she does machine piece as well. Hand appliqué and quilting are among her favorite pastimes.

Jen Kingwell is married to Richard and has 3 fabulous daughters Meg, Abby and Lucy who are by far her very best designs.

Sunday, May 10th Workshop – Cotter

Cotter

The newest edition by Jen Kingwell to the Tempters Range. Cotter has been designed to be jelly roll friendly utilizing a dominant print to highlight the geometric gradient of the finished quilt. This single block Acrylic Template set includes simple instructions on how to complete this block and can be made to any size.

Jen had made the original quilt specific to her released fabric range Remix to include all ‘lollies’ prints with a few highlights of her bold ‘hero’ prints thrown in the mix. Jen has been clever with her straight forward piecing executed in a soft incline, making this quilt eye catching in any finished size!

A great way to utilize scrappy prints in the stash or cut into a complete range to start something new.

This is a hand taught class but if you wish to machine piece, bring along your machine and rotary cutting equipment.

Monday May 11th Quilting Workshop – Psychedelic

Psychedelia

Jen Kingwell’s love of scrappy quilts and curved hand piecing come together in this wild 60’s inspired BOM program.

12 x 18” blocks designed to be cushions with the option of piecing them together for one groovy quilt, it is an ode to Beatlemania, flower power and the psychedelic art movement!

Acrylic templates and fabric, these marvelous designs will both challenge and delight the hand & machine sewers alike. A great program to be involved in for extra classes and skills to be taught to participants.

This is a hand taught class but if you wish to machine piece, bring along your machine and rotary cutting equipment.
