Uneven 9 Patch Quilt Block a tutorial featured as part of the Block Heads quilting series by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Here is another great Quilt Block FOR OUR Moda Block Heads 3 QUILT ALONG PROJECT:

Zig-Zags by Janet Claire

MBH3-26
Moda Block Heads 3 block 26 pieced by Lisa Bongean, using Moda Urban Farmhouse Gatherings and a Bella Solid.

I guess I also have an alternative to the directions…I made 1/2″ HSTs for my block.   I used the layout for the 8″ block.  All you need to do for this 4″ finished block to look like the 8″ block is 16 HSTs of each unit.  Here the easiest way to do it… You will need:

2 -5″ squares of all 4 fabrics A-D.

4 –1/2″ HSTS papers. This link brings you to ALL the Triangle Papers…you will need the 1/2″ Finished for Charm Squares for this block if you want the same as shown here. There is also a Variety pack for the Charms with all four sizes included…

IMG_2797 2

The light is my A, the grey with the black print is my B, the geometric grey/ black is my C and D is my dark grey.

Make all the HST according to the directions on the HST papers. You will have 2 extra from this…the sheets make 18 HSTs each.

Set one is A/B, set two is A/C, set three is B/D and set four is C/D, just like the pattern reads.

IMG_4518

Start stitching the rows together…It is really pretty easy.  Also you if you look close it is very easy to be one thread off and it looks like a lot more…I do not sweat this…let it go…it is almost impossible to get them all perfect making them this small.

IMG_7683 3

My sister gave me this little weight the last time we were out shopping…it is perfect for flattening my stitched pieces.IMG_9440IMG_8173 5

IMG_1300 4

It came out exactly 4 1/2″.  I know it looks bigger here but it is because it is not lying flat, it is raised up more toward the camera…makes an illusion, like when you catch a fish and hold it out closer to the camera, it looks much bigger…same thing here…ask me how I know the fish thing???

Here is the back, showing the seams pressed open.

IMG_5691

I do not know why I could not make the 1″ HSTs…I guess it’s just the way I am…

I hope you try the 4″ block with the 1/2″ HSTs…I can’t wait to see them!  Send me a pic…on social media…there could be a reward!

HERE ARE SOME QUICK TIPS:

STARCH first off!  Most Important…If you need to learn about starching go HERE for STARCH VIDEO

I like to cut my pieces to size unless they are HSTs or Square in a Square units…for this Moda Block Heads-Block 20 pattern the directions are written for flying geese with the sew and flip corner method…Not my favorite, so here are my cutting measurements for my 4″ block.  I also am using Triangle Paper to make perfect 1″ HSTs

Here is a video/post on how the Triangle Papers work.

Here is an idea of what I’m working on for a layout…Just playing so far…but liking how it is turning out…the setting directions will be offered later this summer…

Happy Block Heads Wednesday!..Wait…when you don’t follow the rules you have to wait til Friday to post!

Here is another great Quilt Block FOR OUR QUILT ALONG PROJECT: dream

Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.
Moda Block Heads 3 Block 16, designed by Sherri McConnell…pieced by Lisa Bongean

I had to do it..I had to make 4 of these little blocks to make my 4″ block…I have so many little pieces in the blocks that it only makes sense to keep the little pieces all the way…I think this block is a Lisa Bongean’s Dream block…Thank you Sherri for naming it for me!  It is ALL Half Square Triangles…I love the number 3 therefore the HST is my dream unit.

My goal here is to show you how painless it is to stitch these little blocks using Triangle Papers…also keep in mind all my fabrics have been heavily STARCHED.  I think there is a misconception that just because they are tiny that they are fussy…really they are no big deal..

I used a total of 5 blues and one cream.

I figured out I need 16 HSTs A/B of the same two fabrics.( I had two extra when using the Charm Triangle paper shown)

I need 4 HSTs of A/B of each of 4 different fabrics…I used the same cream throught

I need 2 HST of C/D of four colors each…
Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.I picked out all my triangle papers…

4″ Dream – quilt block was made with all  Indigo Gatherings Fabrics

Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.Layered the Triangle Papers with my fabrics…light on top, right sides together.

Stitched on all the dashed lines…with a shorter stitch length…I have put together some quick videos….lol

Watch how I cut them apart…

Pressing and sorting…

Layout the triangles to form blocks…I do not remove dog-ears at this point.

Chain piecing HSTs…I do not pin them…just match them up…

Flip seams  by finger pressing (it is easy b/c they are starched) and stitch together to form 4 patch HST units

Press and then trim all the strings and dogears…then Layout and stitch with larger HST uni… I do not pin.  Layout each block again to make sure you have the orientation right..  Press seams in opposing directions and stitch together to make the blocks…Make 4.

Press last seam in each block open.  Match up blocks and pin the center and each seam in the blocks and the ends. Stitch last block seam open as well.

I got too excited and forgot to video the last couple of seams…but here is the finished block again…

Long, Long Way From Home… Quilting GiveAway

Redwork Gatherings

Long, Long Way from Home!

Long, Long Way From Home Quilting GiveAway by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean
Long, Long Way From Home

Long, Long Way from Home… is a tribute to my time on the road away from home teaching quilting. The name of this quilt is a song title, this one from Foreigner, another song from my youth and still on my playlist today. The quilt measures 44”x 44”.

The Redwork panel in the line also makes a great backing because you do not have to piece anything…this quilt needs at least 52″x 52″ back for the Long Armer.  A yard and a half is prefect!  The panel is 58″ wide.

Long, Long Way from Home Back

I had Jake quilt this quilt in a honeycomb pattern with red thread.  Do you stitch a red & white quilt in red or light thread?  Well… you will get to see some of the other quilts quilted in light thread.   I will do a whole post on What color THREAD should I(or have my) quilt, quilted with?  I think this is in a more important question than what pattern should I quilt…

How to use a small quilt if you don’t need a baby quilt?

This little quilt will make a nice wall hanging or a little baby quilt that could be loved and loved, the more you wash it the better it will look!  I also think this size quilt is very functional for home decorating…

If you have that little boring corner like I do…you can just add something simple like a ladder or drying rack with a folded quilt…

Friday Quilting Giveaway!

Quilting giveaway hosted by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

This week’s quilting giveaway….

is going to be a FREE download.  I want everyone to know how special and vital you all are to the people in your life.  I sometimes think we forget about this.  So… know you are needed and if not now, someday will appreciated for all you do.  With that on my mind I want to give this quilt pattern called Red Tulip Basket to everyone today.

Quilting Giveaway featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanThis little baby measures 16 “x 18″.  It is sooooooo adorable…the size makes it so you have to look at it and and say…”How small are those pieces?”   Then add Linda’s beautiful quilting and your got yourself a little masterpiece. I know some of you can do this kind of quilting.. and some will do simple cross hatch quilting and it will look good too!  Needs to be about every half inch though….  I am hoping to see this done in some different color ways from some of you.  I myself, will probably make a couple of white tulip blocks.  Maybe a little 4 block quilt.  There are lots of possibilities with this little guy than what you see here….Quilting Giveaway featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanIf you have your 1/2″ finished Triangle papers you will be so happy.  I hate trying to trim blocks down to 1″.  But if you need 1/2″ Triangle papers we have them.  Remember they are in the small variety packs as well where you have 4 sizes in those.

Half Square Triangle Paper Videos

Here are a couple of quick videos on how to use Primitive Gatherings Triangle Papers…Half Square Triangle Paper Videos featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Sewing the starched two fabrics right sides together…paper on top of the light…shorten stitch length to half of what you normally stitch at..I go to 1 on my Juki….Stitch all the dashed lines…

Trim on all the solid lines….make sure you have a nice small ruler…

Flip them to all the dark triangles are facing up…press them using lots of steam….

I cannot get the last video to load…will try again or make another post…

but the last post is removing the paper…hold it near the stitching with your non dominant hand…push the paper triangle back with your dominant hand and pull it away from down near the stitching in the center of the paper triangle…

sorry but I really tried to get this all in one spot…I will keep trying tomorrow! Lisa
