O’ Say Can You Sew – Clue #7

Wow, can you believe it? We’ve made it all the way through to the final clue release for my O’ Say Can You Sew Mystery Quilt-Along! It feels like just yesterday that we started this little patriotic quilting journey of ours way back in April. If you recall, I came up with the idea for this QAL because I had so many reds, whites, and blue scraps left over from previous projects. I thought it would be a fun and creative way to get an awesome patriotic quilt out of simply recycling my salvage. And because I love to torture you, I also thought it would be entertaining to make this a mystery project – meaning participants did not know exactly what they were making until, well… today! I know many of you are eagerly waiting for the final clue and that you are more than ready to get your hands on it, so let’s get going!

I want to say thanks to everyone who kept up with this QAL all the way through! I understand that a mystery quilt isn’t necessarily everyone’s favorite, so kudos for sticking it out til the end. Clue # 7 consists of the sashings and cornerstones for the quilt, which create little star shapes between the blocks. To complete Clue # 7 you will need 142 1 1/2″ x 9 1/2″ light sashing strips, and from the dark colors you will need 80 1 1/2″ squares for the star centers (40 blue and 40 red). You will also need 640 1″ squares for the sashing points. Whether you choose to go the controlled route or decide to get scrap crazy, using the sew and flip method makes this clue a cinch to assemble! Overall it might seem like a lot of work but trust me – it’s not hard, you just have to do it. In the end you’re going to end up with a gorgeous quilt to show for it! More of a visual learner? Don’t forget you can always tune in to my online video tutorial where I walk you through step-by-step how to cut and complete Clue # 7. Watch by simply clicking the link below! And by the way, even though we’re near the end I know some of you might be just about running out of scrap fabric in your stash, so we put together some fat quarter bundles that will be just the right amount to get you through to the end. We have blues bundles of 12 fat quarters for $30.00 per bundle (that’s two FREE! – get those by clicking HERE!), and cream bundles of 12 fat quarters for $35.00, which you can grab by clicking the button below! We are currently no longer offering reds in these special OSCYS bundles due to low stock, but that shouldn’t be a problem if you’re all caught up.

Clue # 7 is available as a FREE download now through Monday November 7th, 2022. After that, it will be available to purchase on our website for $5.00. If you’re just joining me on this Quilt-Along there is still plenty of time to catch up! Links to all released clues are listed in the O’ Say Can You Sew Clue Archive, which can be found in the main menu at the top of this page, and purchased for $5.00 per download.

Alright everyone. It’s another short and sweet post today. I’m about half way through my cruise and finally starting to feel settled in. I have a feeling I’ll be feeling pretty well at home just in time for them to tell me I have to get off the boat LOL! I hope you all are finding ways to keep yourself busy while I’m away – like wrapping up your finishing touches on your Red & White Challenge quilt entry perhaps? Oh! That actually reminds me to remind everyone that is planning to send in entries for the Red & White Quilt Challenge to please remember to include all required paperwork with your quilt! We’re starting to get some quilts arriving for the contest and a couple of them came with zero info! If we don’t have your information, we can’t enter you into the challenge! Also – please be sure to read through all requirements thoroughly so you don’t miss any of the details. We want every entry to make it into the show! Talk to you all soon! ~Lisa

O’ Say Can You Sew – Clue #4

Happy Independence Day everyone!!! What better way to celebrate America’s birthday than to release the next clue for the O’ Say Can You Sew Mystery Quilt-Along!? Clue #4 is designed to be simple and fun, so you can get back to your holiday shenanigans in a jiff! This clue might feel a bit familiar to you because it’s very similar to Clue #1. The difference only applies if you’re doing the red, white, and blue motif like I am, because you’re basically switching colors from blue to red. Those of you doing the scrappy version are free to do whatever floats your boat!

This straightforward checkerboard pattern can be done in a snap using the strip-cut and piece method, or you can cut 1 1/2″ squares – both ways work great for this clue. I know you’re anxious to get your hands on the full pattern and instructions for Clue #4, so let’s get to it! Simply hit the link below to get the full instructions and printable PDF.

Clue #4 is available as a FREE download now through Monday August 1st, 2022. After that, it will be available to purchase on our website for $5.00. If you’re just joining me on this Quilt-Along there is still plenty of time to catch up! Links to all released clues are listed in the O’ Say Can You Sew Clue Archive, which can be found in the main menu at the top of this page. New clues are posted on the first Monday of every month. Remember, once the current month’s clue is posted, the prior clue is no longer free but can be purchased for a small fee of $5.00. For more visual learners I will also be posting a video tutorial of each clue on my Stitch with Lisa Bongean YouTube channel every month, so be sure to check that out as well! You can watch the Clue #4 tutorial by hitting the “STITCH” button below!

Sticking with the red, white, and blue motif but starting to run out of scraps? No problem! We still have fat quarter bundles in stock that will be perfect to supplement your stash. There are blues, whites, and creams available in bundles of 12 fat quarters for $30.00 per bundle (that’s two FREE!), and red bundles of 8 fat quarters for $24.00. They’re also great for any straggler Independence Day projects you might still be wrapping up.

Because we’re celebrating such and important holiday this week – and mostly because I’m nice – here’s a hot tip to give you a head start on the next clue. I will say that I definitely see some half-square triangles in your near future, and that 1″ half-square triangle paper is going to be your best friend for Clue #5. My best advice is to get it ordered now (two packs to be specific) so that by the time August arrives, you’ll be ready to hit the ground running! You can stock up on PG Triangle Paper of a variety of sizes on our website.

That’s all I have for you today because speaking of red, white, and blue… I have celebrating to get back to! This weekend has been nothing short of gorgeous, with perfect weather and plenty of family time, good food, and fun. It’s been so good that I plan to keep it going for a bit, and take some time away from the studio for a little stay-cation for the rest of the week.

Just a reminder we are CLOSED TODAY – Monday July 4th so everyone at PG also gets a chance to spend some time with family and friends. We’ll be back open for regular business hours on Tuesday July 5th at 10AM CST. Also, because most of us in the studio will be out of the office this week, there will be no LIVE YouTube broadcasts. That includes both Shop Talk with Shelley and Stitch with Lisa Bongean. We’ll be back with our regularly scheduled Shop Talk on Tuesday July 12th at 9:00AM CST. Set your timer now so you don’t forget! Happy 4th everyone – I’ll see you soon! ~Lisa

O’ Say Can You Sew – Clue #3

Are you sewing along with me and my O’ Say Can You Sew Quilt-Along? If you are, I hope you have a stack of blocks finished after Clues #1 and #2, because Clue #3 is here and ready to go! Remember – as I mentioned in Clue #2, this project can be done super scrappy or you can take a more planned approach. Anything goes! If you’re doing the more controlled version, along with Clue #2 I also gave you a hint to help you prepare for Clue #3 – which means if you’re on track you should already have four 3 1/2″ squares of the cream fabric you chose to be the controlled element, cut and set aside.

Clue #3 seems easy after doing Clue #2! All you have to do is piece the units together into three rows, and then sew the rows together (press the seams open if you wish). Side note: I don’t usually square or trim my blocks down, because I know that if I stay accurate with my quarter inch seam allowance while cutting, I’ll end up with nice 9 1/2″ square blocks every time. Alright, that’s your homework for the month! You’re simply piecing and sewing together thirty one 9 1/2″ finished blocks… Easy-peasy!

For a printable PDF and full instructions for Clue #3, hit the button below! Clue #3 is available as a FREE download now through July 4th, 2022. After that, it will be available to purchase on our website for $5.00.

If you’re just joining me on this Quilt-Along there is still plenty of time to catch up. Links to all released clues are listed in the O’ Say Can You Sew Clue Archive, which can be found in the menu at the top of this page. Speaking of red, white, and blue… Even though we continue to receive Hogs for Heroes Flag blocks in the mail daily, we still need more! I’m super impressed with the fantastic response we’ve had to this mission so far. THANK you a thousand times to those of you who have already sent in blocks! The only reason we’re so successful with our fundraising efforts for WI veterans is because of you!!! For those of your unfamiliar with this current mission, let me give you the details. My goal is to produce and collect as many Flag blocks as possible by June 15th, 2022. We will then be using the Flag blocks collectively to create a larger, future project that will generate even more funds for Hogs for Heroes!

If you would like to participate in helping to raising funds for Hogs for Heroes by making and donating blocks to this charitable mission, click the link below for the pattern and instructions to get started! One is great but if you feel like making more we’d love it!!! We’re close to hitting our goal but not quite there yet. Every block counts! Please send your finished piece(s) to us no later than June 15th, 2022. Once you’re ready to submit your donated pieces, please package and send your blocks to:

Well I hear it’s another rainy and muggy Monday in WI, which is ok. We can always use the rain. I’m sure that by the time I get home it will even more green and lush than it was when I left last week! For now I’ll have to put up with the sunny skies and 80 degree temps here in Temecula, CA where I’m teaching at the Sew Treasured retreat for Dru today. As much as I’d love to be toes in the sand on a beach somewhere, this trip is mostly for work with no time to play. I will be back home to WI mid-week.

Before I go let’s announce some comment winners! Karen R. and Sue H. – You are the lucky prize winners for your comments here on the blog last week! As usual, I am not posting last names or email addresses for your privacy, so if you think you’re one of these lucky winners please check your email! You can also contact Heidi at heidin@primitivegatherings.us if you have not already received an email from her. She will use your email address to confirm that you are in fact the winner (in the case that there is someone with the same initials, she will determine the correct person with matching email credentials)! If you didn’t win this week, keep leaving me those comments. It’s only a matter of time before it’s your lucky day too!

You can also win prizes by commenting during Shop Talk with Shelley LIVE on Tuesdays at 9:00AM CST, or during Stitch with Lisa Bongean LIVE on Thursdays at 1:00 CST. Give us a shout out! We always love to hear from you. Have a great day everyone! ~Lisa
