Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along- Block 26

Uneven 9 Patch Quilt Block a tutorial featured as part of the Block Heads quilting series by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Here is another great Quilt Block FOR OUR Moda Block Heads 3 QUILT ALONG PROJECT:

Zig-Zags by Janet Claire

MBH3-26
Moda Block Heads 3 block 26 pieced by Lisa Bongean, using Moda Urban Farmhouse Gatherings and a Bella Solid.

I guess I also have an alternative to the directions…I made 1/2″ HSTs for my block.   I used the layout for the 8″ block.  All you need to do for this 4″ finished block to look like the 8″ block is 16 HSTs of each unit.  Here the easiest way to do it… You will need:

2 -5″ squares of all 4 fabrics A-D.

4 –1/2″ HSTS papers. This link brings you to ALL the Triangle Papers…you will need the 1/2″ Finished for Charm Squares for this block if you want the same as shown here. There is also a Variety pack for the Charms with all four sizes included…

IMG_2797 2

The light is my A, the grey with the black print is my B, the geometric grey/ black is my C and D is my dark grey.

Make all the HST according to the directions on the HST papers. You will have 2 extra from this…the sheets make 18 HSTs each.

Set one is A/B, set two is A/C, set three is B/D and set four is C/D, just like the pattern reads.

IMG_4518

Start stitching the rows together…It is really pretty easy.  Also you if you look close it is very easy to be one thread off and it looks like a lot more…I do not sweat this…let it go…it is almost impossible to get them all perfect making them this small.

IMG_7683 3

My sister gave me this little weight the last time we were out shopping…it is perfect for flattening my stitched pieces.IMG_9440IMG_8173 5

IMG_1300 4

It came out exactly 4 1/2″.  I know it looks bigger here but it is because it is not lying flat, it is raised up more toward the camera…makes an illusion, like when you catch a fish and hold it out closer to the camera, it looks much bigger…same thing here…ask me how I know the fish thing???

Here is the back, showing the seams pressed open.

IMG_5691

I do not know why I could not make the 1″ HSTs…I guess it’s just the way I am…

I hope you try the 4″ block with the 1/2″ HSTs…I can’t wait to see them!  Send me a pic…on social media…there could be a reward!

Redwork Quilt… another great quilt & giveaway from Redwork Gatherings.

The REDWORK Quilt that inspired it All…

My favorite quilts in my collection are the Red & White ones…I love red & white quilts so much that I knew I had to create fabrics inspired by these quilts. A treasured antique Redwork quilt inspired the main panel in this line and can be used for so many things…

If you love slow-stitching –and you know I do- the blocks can be stitched or they can be left as they are. The designs can also be used as the center squares of pieced blocks, or just add a feather stitch between the blocks and it will be like the inspiration quilt…the possibilities are endless.

Redwork Gatherings is a small but timeless quilt that uses the main redwork panel, small shoo fly blocks and a fun pieced outer border. The quilt is 57×74 and is the perfect combination of piecing and hand stitching (if you want to that is…)

Redwork Quilt

Sorry for the not-so perfect photo…It has been so windy that I could not get a great full shot of this quilt outside…so I just shot it in my studio.

The traditional baptist fan quilting is beautiful on this quilt and was a no-brainer because of how basic and a not so overpowering, kind of design.

The Redwork Quilt is made using simple shoo fly blocks and all 54 of the redwork designs from the redwork panel.

details of our REdwork Quilt

Shown here is the beautiful backing we picked from a previous Primitive Gatherings line…it works beautifully and if you would like this same backing we have some nice yardage of it yet…but it will not last long and I have showed in a couple of photos already…It is running the right way on the back, but since I have it turn up it looks like it is running the wrong way…since the quilt is directions and the backing is as well so pay attention or remind your quilter that you want them both to be the same direction.

I thought we would originally stitch all these blocks with a stem-stitch and red thread…but they looked so good we decided we did not need to…Sometimes you just have to take the easy way out…\

When you work with deadlines like we do, it is a tough life.  Trying to balance having a life or working all the time when trying to put out the best things possible with the time you are given…

There is not a lot of time with Market lines…so I gracefully accepted that these panels where beautiful as is and there was no need to try and break our necks, fingers and hands trying to get these stitched by hand.Redwork Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean Redwork Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean Redwork Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean Redwork Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanWe have kits and patterns available for this quilt!  Or if you want to create your own, the panel sells for just $12 for all the 54 designs.  The quilts are still 10% off for a little bit…and the pre-cuts are 20% off.  The sale will end on Wednesday…so that gives you a couple more days to decide what you need.

Let’s STITCH a REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt…with Efficiency

This is just a peek into how I make a quilt… maybe you will find a tip or two to use in your quilt making!

The fabrics have been starched and cut...now let’s get stitching….(I will do a post on how I cut a quilt too!)

This quilt has 3 different blocks in it…Square in a Square White, Square in a Square Red and Quarter Square Triangles (QST)

Square in a Square block WhiteSort all the cut pieces into blocks…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

This block starts with a white square and the smallest red triangles….REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Fold the white square in half and pinch both ways…this is where the red triangle points to..the center…Start running them through the machine…

Both sides on…Press, always with steam…notice how I stack when I press.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanI do not trim…waste of time… Now add the next two red triangles.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanSecond pass…now press

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanTime to trim...TOOLS NEEDED…6″ ITTY BITTY SQUARE RULERROTARY CUTTER (red just because I can) ROTATING MAT with finger grooves for easy spinning, because we are trimming all four sides…  You can start two ways…trim 1/4″ away form the point of the white square…or find the center of the square and divide the size you need to trim to and cut that in half.  Place this measurement on the diagonal of the square and then trim. Lefties would always be cutting on the left side.

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanTrim each of the right sides of as many blocks as you can fit on the mat with room to work.

Spin the mat 180 degrees and then cut the size you need on the left trimmed side and then trim the right side again. REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Turn again and find the center or 1/4″ away from the point, cut...REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Turn again and trim the last side…did you notice I did not move my trimmings each time I cut?  This takes up time…so I wait til the end to clear it all. I use my rotary cutter to move them out of the way if I need to.  I do not set down my rotary cutter to move them.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Sort each of the next triangles on each block…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Now back to the machine to stitch the next white triangles…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Press– wait til you have two sides on…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Stitch and press the other sides.

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanTime to trim again…line the ruler up on the center of the red square and trim.

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanREDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Again on as many as you can fit on your mat…turn the mat and line up on the left to size to trim the blocks to and cut again…

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanREDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongeanline up the center again…and cut…turn and trim the last side…

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Add the next red round…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

trim again…

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Repeat again for the last white round…I just happen to have the perfect ruler to square up with…

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanRepeat for the Square in a Square Red blocks..Didn’t think you wanted to watch me do all the red ones again..lol…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongeanand the QST blocks...Trim all the blocks to the same finished size.

I usually piece my units to the exact size with this one exception…multiple square in a square is just easy to trim.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Layout your blocks…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanTake a picture of your quilt to see if anything looks funny or if you have too much dark in one spot or anything silly like that…

Start piecing rows together…I put a pin in the first block so I do not mix anything up, if I think I mixed something up I can always check the photo…I really love these new gripper pins…they are fantastic!  They are fine and it is nice to have that rubber grip for putting them in and pulling them out…I didn’t think I would like them but LOVE them…you also can iron them…they won’t melt…..they are MAGIC PINS100 & MAGIC PINS 50REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanYou also can check your fabrics when you layout your rows…

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanREDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Press rows in opposing directions.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Press long row seams open when stitching rows together.  Large Strip StickREDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanAll pieced together…off to the quilter…do you do this when you have a quilt with not border?  Stay-stitch the edges 1/8″ all the way around?  Do this so the piecing is not pulled apart.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanBack from quilting…I am so pleased with how this one turned out but I will discuss this in another post about the quilting.REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanI named this quilt… I THINK I’M IN LOVE…REDWORK GATHERINGS Quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanShe lies flat and straight….I washed it after I stitched the binding on…I want the quilting to sink in.

Long, Long Way From Home

Long, Long Way from Home… is a tribute to my time on the road away from home teaching quilting. The name of this quilt is a song title, this one from Foreigner, another song from my youth and still on my playlist today. The quilt measures 44”x 44”.

The Redwork panel in the line also makes a great backing because you do not have to piece anything…this quilt needs at least 52″x 52″ back for the Long Armer.  A yard and a half is prefect!  The panel is 58″ wide.

Long, Long Way From Home Quilting GiveAway by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean
Long, Long Way from Home Back

I had Jake quilt this quilt in a honeycomb pattern with red thread.  Do you stitch a red & white quilt in red or light thread?  Well… you will get to see some of the other quilts quilted in light thread.   I will do a whole post on What color THREAD should I(or have my) quilt, quilted with?  I think this is in a more important question than what pattern should I quilt…

How to use a small quilt if you don’t need a baby quilt?

This little quilt will make a nice wall hanging or a little baby quilt that could be loved and loved, the more you wash it the better it will look!  I also think this size quilt is very functional for home decorating…

If you have that little boring corner like I do…you can just add something simple like a ladder or drying rack with a folded quilt…
