Long, Long Way From Home… Quilting GiveAway

Redwork Gatherings

Long, Long Way from Home!

Long, Long Way From Home

Long, Long Way from Home… is a tribute to my time on the road away from home teaching quilting. The name of this quilt is a song title, this one from Foreigner, another song from my youth and still on my playlist today. The quilt measures 44”x 44”.

The Redwork panel in the line also makes a great backing because you do not have to piece anything…this quilt needs at least 52″x 52″ back for the Long Armer.  A yard and a half is prefect!  The panel is 58″ wide.

Long, Long Way from Home Back

I had Jake quilt this quilt in a honeycomb pattern with red thread.  Do you stitch a red & white quilt in red or light thread?  Well… you will get to see some of the other quilts quilted in light thread.   I will do a whole post on What color THREAD should I(or have my) quilt, quilted with?  I think this is in a more important question than what pattern should I quilt…

How to use a small quilt if you don’t need a baby quilt?

This little quilt will make a nice wall hanging or a little baby quilt that could be loved and loved, the more you wash it the better it will look!  I also think this size quilt is very functional for home decorating…

If you have that little boring corner like I do…you can just add something simple like a ladder or drying rack with a folded quilt…

Here are the 30 prints in Redwork Gatherings….I tried to get a close up of all of them…instead of showing them all individual…and driving you totally crazy…but these reds are AWESOME reds…true red, a little tomato red and then a deep red…the lights are cream, not white…but they look white in the quilts.  This is my description of the colors.

Now for the prints…they are all collected from my antique quilts…I search through my quilts and pick some little tiny motifs, some geometrics, stripes and some big & small florals and that rounds out the group.  There are 20 red prints and 10 cream prints counting the panel.Redwork Gatherings quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Packaging

Otherwise known as precuts…Moda packages precuts of my line…and one of the fun things about this is…the smaller cuts like. Mini charms (2 1/2″ squares), Charms (5″ squares), & Layercakes (10″ squares)… they have 42 fabrics in them…so there are 21 lights and 21 reds…so an even amount!  I like this when it happens, I may even plan it that way…it is easy to design when this happens…

We double the lights fabrics  and the reds are singles.  To come up with 21 lights & 21 darks  a few are added.    The 4 fabrics off to the right are the extra ones to make the 42 total fabrics in these precuts.Redwork Gatherings quilt featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Honeybuns (1 1/2″ wide x WOF ) and Jellyrolls (2 1/2″ wide x WOF) also have double the lights…so there will be 20 reds and 20 lights…for a total of 40 fabrics.

The Fat Eighth (F8) bundle (I like to call them towers). Does not contain the panel…It has 29 F8ths.  The Fat Quarter (FQ) bundle includes all 29 fat quarters and the whole panel 1 yd long by 58″ wide.

This is a short but hopefully helpful explanation of the fabrics….and what they contain.

A couple of Shop Notes to share with you…

Jen Kingwell & Debbie Maddy’s May and June works shops are being rescheduled.  We will be informing you all soon when the dates will be.  If you would like us to refund your class fee we can, but we would really really really appreciate it if you would take a SHOP CREDIT at this time as any money we do not have to lose at this time is much appreciated or just keep your class sign up spot secure and do nothing.  Those of you stay signed up will have first options for the classes.  Please be patient as the details with the other destinations the designers were also visiting can be firmed up and our plan in place..we THANK YOU all so much for understanding this.

Our WI Governor has lifted some of our limitations for Arts & Craft stores…We will have someone at the store starting April 27th to help with call in orders and curbside pickups and behind the scenes work.

Our April & May Blocks of the month will be sent out at the same time to be more efficient with our resources. This will help us get back on track much faster and we again appreciate your understanding in these un-forseen circumstances.

Now back to our regular schedule Redwork Gatherings posts…If you wish to win a pre-cut of Redwork Gatherings…leave a comment and tell me what your favorite precut is and why…that may be your prize if you win!

Remember I will be picking winners at the end of the ALL the redwork posts…all at one time…so you have several chances to win some fun things on each of these posts!

Enjoy some more Red & White fun!

Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August

This Spring Quilt Market in May would have marked my 20th Spring  Quilt Market…I had some fun things planned…but as they say…Life Happens…so I will just have to have the fun right here on this Blog!!  I am going to slowly discuss/explain this fabric line and the quilts we have made with it… We have the time…I am going to enjoy it as I talk about them over the next week or two…  Twenty years is a long time…I have had a blast…I think this is really what I was meant to do…even though it wasn’t in my plans...sometimes it just happens that way.  I am grateful for everything and especially those of you who have followed me through the years… and I am not done yet…there is still so much to do…

Redwork Gatherings

…is my Moda fabric line based on my antique quilt collection.

My favorite quilts in my collection are the Red & White ones…I love red & white quilts so much that I knew I had to create fabrics inspired by these quilts. A treasured antique Redwork quilt inspired the main panel in this line and it can be used for so many things…Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

If you love slow-stitching –and you know I do- the blocks can be stitched over the top of the printed lines or they can be left as they are. The designs can also be used as the center squares of pieced blocks, or just add a feather stitch between the blocks and it will be like the inspiration quilt…the possibilities are endless.  The panel is 58″ wide with a 36″ repeat.  I do not have a real pic of the panel.  Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanCan you see how we made it look like it is stitched already?Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Our panel is made up of only flowers & birds.

Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

I also have a few small baby quilts with redwork designs on them…  There is something so sweet about redwork stitching.Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa BongeanIf you can’t wait for me to explain all the fabrics and quilts…they are already on the site for pre-order.  The pre-cuts are 20% off the kits are 10% off and the backings if purchase with the kit are 20% off.  But there will be more posts with chances for you to WIN stuff…I will pick winners at the end of all the Redwork Gatherings posts… but I will pick a winner from EACH post.  So PLEASE stick around and put up with me taking the time I usually don’t have to share the quilts and fabrics with you…

All REDWORK pre-orders will receive this cute sticker sheet that I was going to give out at Market..until we run out of them, I don’t think we will run out we have 300 of them…but if we do we will order more to cover our pre-orders…I don’t think we will have 300 pre-orders but I would be overjoyed if that would happen!  We have limited quantities left of the STITCH stickers as we did put them in the Bunny kit orders….we have already re-ordered them so please be patient as the sticker company is NOT working right now…but we will have them again soon.Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean Redwork Gatherings: the Next MODA Quilt Fabric Line Coming in August featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Here is a little about Jen Kingwell if you do not know her yet!!

JEN KINGWELL

Jen has been lucky in her life to have had two wonderful careers. Her first love was midwifery and she felt honoured to be included in life’s most precious every day miracles. She doesn’t know where her love of fabrics came from, her mother was not a sewer but she does know she has always been fascinated by colour and pattern. Like many she tried different crafts and stumbled into quilting over 30 years ago and there she has remained. An interest became an obsession which then became her career, including teaching and designing. She has owned quilt stores for 15 years and currently owns Amitie Textiles in Melbourne Australia www.amitie.com.au and Instagram @amitie_textiles. The store offers an eclectic mix of fabrics including Japanese, Liberty of London, linens from Europe, french toiles and a wide collection of patchwork fabrics of course including Moda!!

She describes herself as a traditional quilter with a modern twist. Loves scrappy quilts and the more fabrics she can use in a single project the happier she is. In her perfect world she would hand stitch everything but with today’s busy lifestyle she does machine piece as well. Hand appliqué and quilting are among her favorite pastimes.

Jen Kingwell is married to Richard and has 3 fabulous daughters Meg, Abby and Lucy who are by far her very best designs.

Sunday, May 10th Workshop – Cotter

Jen Kingwell stitching class featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Cotter

The newest edition by Jen Kingwell to the Tempters Range. Cotter has been designed to be jelly roll friendly utilizing a dominant print to highlight the geometric gradient of the finished quilt. This single block Acrylic Template set includes simple instructions on how to complete this block and can be made to any size.

Jen had made the original quilt specific to her released fabric range Remix to include all ‘lollies’ prints with a few highlights of her bold ‘hero’ prints thrown in the mix. Jen has been clever with her straight forward piecing executed in a soft incline, making this quilt eye catching in any finished size!

A great way to utilize scrappy prints in the stash or cut into a complete range to start something new.

This is a hand taught class but if you wish to machine piece, bring along your machine and rotary cutting equipment.

Monday May 11th Quilting Workshop – Psychedelic

Jen Kingwell stitching class featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean

Psychedelia

Jen Kingwell’s love of scrappy quilts and curved hand piecing come together in this wild 60’s inspired BOM program.

12 x 18” blocks designed to be cushions with the option of piecing them together for one groovy quilt, it is an ode to Beatlemania, flower power and the psychedelic art movement!

Acrylic templates and fabric, these marvelous designs will both challenge and delight the hand & machine sewers alike. A great program to be involved in for extra classes and skills to be taught to participants.

This is a hand taught class but if you wish to machine piece, bring along your machine and rotary cutting equipment.
