This block is super fun!  I am sure Robin will have several, several ways for you to color your block, which I think is super cool…I do not have mad graphic design skills, so I love that she plays around with all those color options….I probably should have picked a more subtle background, but Hey…I’m not changing it! there is lots of foliage in my corner garden block..

The Moda designers are kick’n off July with another Martingale book giveaway!   On my blog we are a giving away Merry Makers Book!!!!! Christmas is coming and we will be celebrating it in July in many ways…
For a chance to win this book…..please leave me a comment…about do you like it when we celebrate Christmas in July to get jump start on our projects we want to make for decorating or giving?  Let me know your thoughts…Here is my project in the book!

Stay Cool….it’s hot in WI and I am sure it’s even more crazy hot other places as well…we are in the 90’s all week!  Happy July Everyone!

Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along- Block 18- Alternate

Here is another great Quilt Block FOR OUR QUILT ALONG PROJECT:                 Martha Washington

Moda Block Heads 3-18 Alternative/ Lisa Bognean Top US Quilt Blogger Martha Washington 4″ Block

For this alternate block I just picked on of my favorite traditional blocks.  I remember as a new quilter drooling over this block thinking…I wish I could make this block…I knew it was way over my skills at the time.  But guess what?  With stitch-alongs like Moda Block Heads 3 you can build your skills really really fast…

We are so lucky today…with how much exposure we have to all things quilting and stitching…I remember the thing I looked forward to most was my quilt guild meeting where once a month I could get all kinds of inspiration.  Now it is everywhere! I love it of course, but how many of you remember those long days in-between before you would hang out with quilting friends and the two places we had were the guild meeting and the quilt shop!  I am feeling a little down, I just received word another retreat is cancelled for me….I MISS MY RETREATS with my students/friends.

Those of you who consider yourselves beginners I want to share some key things that are going to make you a better piecer…hands down.  It is so cool to be a quilter now…we can teach you so much everyday…

must haves to be a great Block Maker

STARCH YOUR FABRICS

CUT ACCURATELY -make sure you are using great quality rulers, yes some are way better than others.  Make sure you have plenty of light when cutting.  Cutting is so important.

NICE SEWING MACHINE I could not believe the difference in my stitching on a quality machine.  Make sure you can stitch a consistant 1/4″ seam allowance that when you stitch 3 strips of 1 1/2″x 3 1/2″  starched fabric together that middle strip measures 1″ and the whole block measures 3 1/2″. Adjust until it does.  If you can do it with a 1/4″ foot, or you need to stitch up against tape, however that may look.  You do not need to spend thousand and thousands of dollars for a great machine…but make sure it’s great quality.

Nice STEAM iron.…if your fabrics are starched they are pre shrunk…and the steam will not shrink them any further while piecing a block. Flat blocks make flat straight quilts.

These are really the most important, yes, there are many others important things but not quite as important as these…and yes this is my opinion…but watch how easy it is to make a 4″ finished block…I starch, cut everything to the correct size…no trimming down here…I only cut off dog ears when it’s time…and my blocks come out pretty reasonably well!

Here I am this morning making this block…yes…cutting and piecing was probably 20 min at the most…I know the video is  fast but you get the idea…also, I know it is not how fast you can do something…but when you want to make lots of things…time matters for me.  In my groups I am getting things like…I am still working on last years projects…so TIME saving is important!

Sorry this isn’t prettier, but I did add a link so you can print this off easily.

Here is another great Quilt Block FOR OUR QUILT ALONG PROJECT: dream

Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.
Moda Block Heads 3 Block 16, designed by Sherri McConnell…pieced by Lisa Bongean

I had to do it..I had to make 4 of these little blocks to make my 4″ block…I have so many little pieces in the blocks that it only makes sense to keep the little pieces all the way…I think this block is a Lisa Bongean’s Dream block…Thank you Sherri for naming it for me!  It is ALL Half Square Triangles…I love the number 3 therefore the HST is my dream unit.

My goal here is to show you how painless it is to stitch these little blocks using Triangle Papers…also keep in mind all my fabrics have been heavily STARCHED.  I think there is a misconception that just because they are tiny that they are fussy…really they are no big deal..

I used a total of 5 blues and one cream.

I figured out I need 16 HSTs A/B of the same two fabrics.( I had two extra when using the Charm Triangle paper shown)

I need 4 HSTs of A/B of each of 4 different fabrics…I used the same cream throught

I need 2 HST of C/D of four colors each…
Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.I picked out all my triangle papers…

4″ Dream – quilt block was made with all  Indigo Gatherings Fabrics

Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt Along Project Block 16 featured by top US quilting blogger, Lisa Bongean.Layered the Triangle Papers with my fabrics…light on top, right sides together.

Stitched on all the dashed lines…with a shorter stitch length…I have put together some quick videos….lol

Watch how I cut them apart…

Pressing and sorting…

Layout the triangles to form blocks…I do not remove dog-ears at this point.

Chain piecing HSTs…I do not pin them…just match them up…

Flip seams  by finger pressing (it is easy b/c they are starched) and stitch together to form 4 patch HST units

Press and then trim all the strings and dogears…then Layout and stitch with larger HST uni… I do not pin.  Layout each block again to make sure you have the orientation right..  Press seams in opposing directions and stitch together to make the blocks…Make 4.

Press last seam in each block open.  Match up blocks and pin the center and each seam in the blocks and the ends. Stitch last block seam open as well.

I got too excited and forgot to video the last couple of seams…but here is the finished block again…

I hope you liked my quick videos…as you can see my block turned out pretty good!

Click the link below to get this week’s pattern and remember I made 4  of the blocks 2″ to make the 4″ block…the small triangles are 1/2″ and the larger are 1″.

OH! and I almost forgot…the winner of last week’s Moda Block Head Book 1 is…
