travel adventures- part 2

Hey…When you have a long weekend in St. George UT what can you do?  Stitch, Hike,  Spa, Netflix and stitch some more…

THURSDAY:On our way to Zion!  Up early, bundled up in warm clothes for our 42 degree, winter hike on my first trip to Zion National Park.

I had so much fun and want to go back to do more trails…look at this rock I was at a rock shop..

FRIDAY: We stitched in the morning and had massage appointments at Red Mountian Spa…I had the best massage ever!  Ask for Trevor…he helped with my TMJ, Arms, hands and neck…It felt so amazing!  I just may have to stay there sometime!

SATURDAY: We stitched and in the afternoon we went to this trail…it was an off-road adventure for sure.

Inside that hole in the above pic…

Some deep breaths…some meditation…and some mind-clearing for what lies ahead…I know I will visit this place, again and again, this next year…I will just close my eyes and I will be there.  This is priceless.

Simple is best!

After our hike we stitched into the night while watching Bridgerton on Netflix.

SUNDAY- Another day of stitching while watching my Green Bay Packers lose the NFC playoff game…But the best team won that day…we beat ourselves.  We finished up watching the last couple of episodes of Brigerton.  I completed almost all of my projects I  took along for the trip.  I can’t wait for you to see or receive them!

MONDAY-We packed up and headed back to Las Vegas where I jumped on a plane and now I am in Minneapolis waiting to catch my last flight home….

I also want to acknowlege we had much to celebrate during this weekend…I’m so proud of you Val…two new knee surgeries and 35lbs gone.   I so happy that you are my friend….

Thanks for hanging out with me here,  I know it’s mostly rocks…but it was amazing in person…if you want to see more of my trip I did post a video of Zion in my Facebook group Stitch With Lisa Bongean.

Have a great week….Look for more videos, quilts and wool projects coming soon!

Take care of yourselves. Lisa

travel adventures- part 1-revised

Hey Everyone…just stopping in to write about my travels…I just decided it was time to get back to normal for me.  I know it’s not the time for everyone, but it is for me.  I started with going to Atlanta to the world market to look for furniture for our new build (check out the progress here) and for new home dec for our store for fall and Christmas …as it will be that time just when we are moving in!  This table and stools will be our conference table..Also thought you might want to see that companies are still decorating with antique quilts…

There was so much to choose from…three skyscrapers full of shop owners to buy for their stores.

I really loved these jingle bells!

I did manage to stitch one thing in Atlanta…This will be a pillow in my book in April, Farmhouse Urban Patchwork Gatherings.Lisa Bongean After Atlanta…it was off to see the California store…after 1 year of not coming to CA…it was time.  Dru picked me up from the airport, and we went straight to my favorite eating place.  The Goat & Vine…(I think we ate there a total of 3x out of the 5 days I was there.  Then I went to Big Bear Lake on Saturday and Sunday with my friend Roxanne.  We hiked and sewed…I make 960 HSTs.   This is the ski hill from our hiking trail.

We might have shopped and eaten a little too!  We are in the famous breakfast place in town?  Anybody know where?

Then back to the CA store to do two Social virtual sewing zoom gatherings with a combined total of 50 customers.  It was so fun to see everyone, stitch, talk about what was going on, and even saw some sewing rooms!  Thank you to all who joined it…it was a fun day, and I hope to do it again soon!

Next up was a flight to Vegas…yes, I know I thought we were going to drive, but the flight was too reasonable, and then I didn’t put anyone out too much by driving all day.  Val picked me up at the airport, and we started on our way to St. George, UT, but we had a side stop at…Sherrie McConnell’s house!!!  Sherrie is my Moda sister.  I miss all my Moda sisters, and it was fun to see one of them, at least!  Val machine quilts for Sherrie too!

Sherri showing us her sewing room!

All the quilts….in the vault.  Follow Sherri (A Quilting Life)  on Youtube, where she has a podcast with her beautiful daughter Chelsi and lots of videos on quilting!

And here we are in her podcast studio… It is part of the spare bedroom…who knew????

We set the timer for the photo. We got nicer ones…but I like this one!

Sherri made us a delicious lunch of potato soup and chicken salad croissants and then sent us back on the trail..to St. George…I’ll post more on St. George…in part 2.

Happy Saturday…Hiking again today!

Hogs for Heros…American Quilter’s Stitch Along/Prep

HOGS FOR HEROES checking in here…and we are stunned, and honored, by this beautiful effort to support our healing mission! We only just learned of Lisa’s generous plan and can hardly believe quilters across the nation will unite to sew their hearts out to benefit veterans’ healing. Thank you!

A little bit about us, because knowing who benefits from your labors is important to your heart. Hogs For Heroes is a small, WI nonprofit created by four family members, none of whom served. We do this volunteer work simply out of gratitude for those who served and sacrificed much on our behalf, and from a desire to provide struggling, at-risk Veterans with a healing alternative: wind therapy, as we Bikers affectionately call it. We raise funds to buy Harley-Davidson motorcycles for Veteran riders who, injured in the course of active duty, find themselves hurting–mentally, physically, emotionally–and unable to have a Bike in their life. We help them heal by gifting them a Harley that allows them to regain peace on the road, control in their life, clarity, pride, and joy…and equally important, support from the rider community and Veteran brotherhoods.

We know motorcycling isn’t everyone’s cup of tea… but if it’s your blood its roots run deep and make up an identity, culture, and community for its riders–all things similar to the military, and deeply missed as Veterans separate from service. It is estimated that 22 Veterans a day commit suicide; another compelling reason to offer alternative therapy with a “tool” that is well established in the military community and will support them for years to come. We direct 100% of every donation straight toward the next Bike and Veteran pairing. And because we do this work voluntarily on the side of jobs, family, and life…we thought we would be successful if we could raise funds to gift one Harley a year. Instead, in just a little over 4 years of gifting bikes, we wrapped up our 2020 season by returning SIXTEEN injured Veteran riders back to the road they love on beautiful Harleys. Each Recipient will tell you that our gift has truly changed their life and, in several cases, literally saved their lives. And while our gift is only given to one individual, its positive ripple effect impacts the lives of their spouses, families, friends, employers, and community as they find new outlets, opportunities, and support systems.

Thank you for reading through our nutshell-version to learn about our unique work. And thank you, for participating in this amazing project to support our veterans’ healing needs.

Like what you heard? Be sure to LIKE US on Facebook to stay on top of our activity and announcements! You can learn more about our work and the Veterans we have supported at http://www.hogsforheroeswi.org. And, if you’re so inclined, you can donate there too, but I know Lisa is raising funds as well with this stitch along and you may want to contribute to the Quilters effort.

🙂 Peace to all…. and best wishes as you each make these beautiful quilts!  Audra Thompson

If this doesn’t touch you?  I don’t know what does, It has even more impact seeing it in person. May 2019 I watched Rob Thede receive his bike…and with tears streaming down my face that is when I decided I was going to “try” and do this for another vet.  Believing you can is 90% of completing a goal.  It is now time to make that happen.  With this American Quilters Stitch Along WE are going to accomplish it. I hope you’re along for this ride...because I need y’all to do it!  I’m counting on us Quilter’s to make this happen!  Audra left the above info as a comment on my blog but I wanted you all to read it.  She sent this to me after I called her and explained what I wished to do.  We have set up a separate bank account for our funds raised, you will be able to directly donate to it.  I will let you know when that time comes.  But while you are waiting you can start getting ready…

★    Hey Everyone…

I am so excited you are going to Stitch-Along with us on this wonderful pattern. This quilt is so much fun and everyone will want it! You now have to decide if you are only going to make one, or more than one! Hopefully, we will be starting on time, but if our fabric is delayed we will have to push it back and start when it is possible!

I do have an underlying reason for this SAL and that is to raise money for Hogs for Heroes.

I hope all of you can help me do this, and we can help change lives for our military veterans. I will be posting more information about this on my blog.

HERE ARE A FEW THINGS I THINK WILL BE HELPFUL WHEN MAKING THIS QUILT

The American Gatherings Fat Quarter fabric bundle. -Each FQ tower of American Gatherings bought at Primitive Gatherings is an automatic $10 donation for Hogs for Heros.

★    4 or 6 yards of fabric, for sashing, borders, and bindings. I made one quilt with blue and the other one with cream…I will be making several more with the blocks I will be making while doing the tutorials each week. I have two sizes here just in case you want to make your quilt bigger or add matching pillowcases. The four yards is enough to complete the quilt.

★    Starch – I strongly suggest you starch your fabrics prior to cutting them. I will be posting a video on How to Starch your fabrics.  Buy Heavy Duty Faultless starch in blue or purple cans, not gold.  You will need about 2 for this project.

★    ThreadsMy suggestions for threads are any of these three, Aurifil 2309 (cream) 2620            (light/med grey) and 2785 (navy). I personally do not like stitching dark fabrics with light thread…I used the navy for stitching the blue borders on the quilt blocks.

★    Small rulers like, 3×7, 6×6, 5×15 Itty Bitty Eights rulers. All of these rulers will be so helpful for cutting these blocks.

★    12½” x 12½’ Creative Grid rulers. This ruler is so helpful in squaring up your finished quilt blocks.                                                                                                                            ★

★    Simple Folded Corner ruler. This tool is awesome…especially if you like perfect blocks.

★   Optional, but recommended…Single Hole throat plate on your machine. If you have an oblong hole on your machine where the needle goes up and down, you may want to put on a single hole throat plate. These are standard on machines that only stitch straight, but can be purchased for your machine if you do not have one. This prevents the little pieces of fabric from being sucked down into the oblong hole which is standard on machines

I may share other ideas, tips, and thoughts along the way. I will be posting the block each week on here on my Blog along with weekly giveaways, auctions and other fun…do not miss out!

Stitch with Lisa’s Facebook Group.

I encourage you to stitch along each week, share your blocks on my Stitch with Lisa’s           Facebook Group, and tag your blocks with #americanquilterssal on Instagram or other social platforms. I know lots of shops will also be hosting this as a Stitch-Along…I am hoping we can get some posts and comments from them as well as showing them all stitching together!

★   ABBREVIATIONS: I like to use the following abbreviations in the pattern to help from repeating over and over.

          SFC = Single Folded Corner

         SQ/SQ = Square in a Square

         FG = Flying Geese

         HST = Half Square Triangle

★ I will show a couple of different ways to make/stitch the blocks each week. However, you may have a preferred way and you are more than welcome to use your favorite method.

★Cutting for Blocks:

In the first week, I will give you the cutting for all the red and cream stripes. You can choose to cut one block each week OR stack and cut ALL of your blocks (20) for the whole quilt the first week.

When stacking your fabrics, pay attention to the direction of the stripes. You may want them to run the short way on some prints and/or the long way. This is certainly up to you. (But keep this in mind when you are stacking and cutting your strips.) These strips are also cut longer and will be trimmed down later. I find this much easier with this many strips involved.

★ Use a scant ¼” seam allowance and test it to make sure you are not too big or too small.

I just found out our FQ bundles will be delayed….there are so many on the order they need a little more time!.   This gives us a little extra time to gather our things and get ready….so no worries, we will start with the first block when the fabric is on it’s way to us from Dallas.   It’s a time of adaptability.  I will redo the 20 bock schedule so we have all the blocks by Memorial Day! Long Arm Quilting now at Primitive Gatherings…

We all need to get our quilts quilted.  Then they can be loved like this one is.  How happy does this little guy look, snuggled in his MiMi’s quilt…

I am super proud of all of my sons and when they want to be a part of you business and then find their niche, it’ a feeling of contentment,  and that all will be “ok”.

I can not  personally tell you why you should send Primitive Gatherings your quilts to be long- arm quilted, but if you take 10 minutes watch to watch this video, you will understand why I did not want to tell you.

Luke, Jake & Tyler (Jake’s childhood friend) let you know about themselves and about their quilting.

Click on this video below…

Most of you know these guys, they have worked the quilt show circuit for years, they’ve attended quilt markets, they’ve worked in the shop.  Hopefully, now they can help you get your quilt tops quilted!  They also will be selling long-arms and teaching classes on how to use them…They know all about them…They can set them up and take them down and make them do amazing stitching!this is another reason why I can’t wait to be in our new building…here’s some progress…Can you figure out what is what?   LB

Lisa Bongean 12 Days of Needful Things and Giveaways!

12 Needful Things….Day 12

Welcome to my 12 Days of  Needful Things!  I am grateful to know there are a lot of NEW Quilter’s & Stitchers following me here now than ever before.  I want you ALL to know that this warms my heart in a big way.  2020 has been a big year of change…change that we will look back on and talk about as a big world event…like this… Do you remember the year we all “stayed home?” and so on.  (Click on Links to find out more information)

For me, 2020 ‘s changes were very dramatic in my quilting life. Who am I kidding… my quilting life IS my life…hahaha…bear with me here before we begin the 12 Needful Things… I am not upset about 2020.  I am an optimist…I found lots to LOVE about 2020.  But  here are a few things that changed significantly for me…

No travel...I used to travel two to three times a month, teaching for guilds, vending at a shows, traveling with quilters on an adventure, buying trips, regular visits to our California store and work & personal quilting retreats…all gone for 2020.

Re-Creating how we do business.  Primitive Gatherings was a strong family business.  But what do we do if we can’t attend a quilt show and sell our products? if we don’t have a class full of students?  I guess we get on social media, start a group….(Stitch with Lisa) where I could fill the void of not being able to teach.   I started sharing little videos on stitches, how to’s and then the LIVE video’s sharing what I am working on, tutorials and sharing my home life as well.  In other words being available to those who needed some social interaction because the only place we were going was the grocery store, in fear mind you….I believe we still are in the infancy of our business transformation.  We are now on YouTube, I have become a little more comfortable in front of the camera…We are working on a better set up for video/audio and learning our new equipment.  We have big plans and in the end…we will make the best of 2020.

Personal care...being able to stay home allowed me the ability to take better care of myself… I hired an online Life Coach which helped with many issues, time management, work/personal life separation, weight loss, personal relationships, and learning how to celebrate my successes. These are just a few things that I am working on with her.  It is all still a work in progress but I feel much more confident and in control than I have ever been before.

Collaborations..when you are unsure of the future…you work harder.  I have two possibly three books coming out in 2021  with Martingale.  We have four MODA fabrics lines with supporting pattern books coming in 2021. Two are regular cotton lines, one flannel, and one homespun.   I have 2 more already in the works for 2022, this would have never happened before…to be this far ahead with my fabric lines.  I do not recall how many other collaborations we will be involved in…I know we are in American Patchwork & Quilting in early summer of 2021…and a few more Moda All-Star books too!

Why am I telling you all this?  As this year ends I want to change things for next year.  We will be moving into a new Shop & Warehouse and then our retreat house.   This will allow us to better to serve our quilting community.  For our online community I want to offer more Stitch-Alongs, tutorials, Add a “quilty”  subscription box in the alternating months we do not have a wool/stitchery box.

I do not know if we will have the Summer blocks of the weeks the same way as we have offered them for the past 15 years….and this event the 12 days of Needful Things will also change…but I promise the changes will be good and you will probably like it much better!

I can’t possibly thank you enough for your participation, loyalty, and friendship when we all needed each other this year.  As the leader of Primitive Gatherings, I promise you we all give 100% in everything we do…We care and want our customers to be happy…Stitching is our happy place…

Now onto the Needful Things...Important Info first…please READ.

There will be 12 days…starting today…some will have multiple items some only one….you can keep your items in your wish list until the end…or not…shipping is free after $100. If you are keeping them in your cart they will clear after a certain amount of days…so add them wish list and then add them to the cart when you are ready to order.   If the item is a pre-order it needs to go in a separate single order…

We have items in stock, however, we do not know if we will sell 5 or 500 so we may have to order additional items in, this takes time…so do not be in a hurry for your order…it is also the holidays….there are days we are shut down and employees are on vacation…if you wait to place your order at the end, know it will be well into January before it comes….

Please understand we are a SMALL business (do not compare us with major online shopping outlets)….we are expanding with the BUILD  (click here for weekly updates) but for now we have two or three persons working to ship…we do work more than 1 shift at times like this…but this is not a normal time and we cannot hire just anyone off the street to get your orders right…we need to train them for a long time to know threads and designers and all that knit picky stuff…

Now back to the fun stuff.

Day 12-Fabric…Ahhhh yes, we all NEED fabric and I bet for most of you, stitched a lot of fabric this year!  The fabric I would like to offer here in my next fabric release in April 2021.  For this event we are featuring 20% off our pre-cuts and 10% off our kits and book.  This will be a pre-order and only pre-orders of this fabric can be on the order with the April delivery.
