Sorry I must be so used to writing Valdani that I accidentally inserted Valdani instead of Aurifil for Day 4.
Sorry for this inconvenience this may have caused… LB
The 50wt. Aurifil threads is the best threads for our sewing machine stitching. Hands down… It’s fine…doesn’t take up room in the seam…its a 50/2 this means it 50 wt. but only wound with 2 strands of thread…most 50wts. are 3 strands….it’s clean…there will be hardly any lint residue in your bobbin case or machine… They come in three sizes…mini spools with 220 yds for $5.00…regular spools with 1422 yds on them for $13.35…and then the large cones with 6452 yds for $50.00…I use mainly the regular and cones sizes for my machine piecing and the mini spools would be for hand or machine appliqué where you would need lots of colors….
Why the big cone? It’s like getting one of the regular sizes free if you do the math? Yes, the cone seems like a lot of $$$ but it is the better bargain especially if you only stitch with 4 threads like I do…cream, black, medium tan, but mostly the dark taupe…
Now my favorite thing to mention is one the biggest mistakes people do in machine piecing… drives me crazy when I see it…and I notice it right away…Do you know what it is??? Using TOO light of thread when piecing…it sticks out like a siren blaring!!! We need to darken our threads so they blend in…I know we need to use cream when we are piecing cream on cream…but when we are piecing cream and navy together I still would use a dark thread…My all time favorite thread that is stitched into 90% of my quilt is 1140. Shown here on my machine…I know it looks dark here…but it disappears in my piecing. Have I ever led you astray? If you do not want to go this dark…the other one that would work 2372…but I really love the 1140. Shop the AURIFIL selection of threads by clicking the link. The threads we carry in the cones will have a drop down box for you to pick your selection of either cone or regular spool. If you want a fast link to my cone 1140 here that it…1140 All Aurifil Thread will be 25% off and will show up in the cart at the discounted price…
Now aren’t’ these little bobbin buddies so cute? Organization is the key here…its so nice to keep a bobbin with a thread for when you need to quick stitch something…and you don’t have to look for a matching bobbin, its right there…I love that I can now store my lonely cream thread with it matching bobbin…and when I need it…its right there! The bobbin buddies are reg. 6/$2.10 on sale for 6/$1.75. Order yours here. BOBBIN BUDDIES The discount will show up in your cart.
Fast post today…lots to do at work and for the Holidays….I stitched most of the day yesterday…on this lovely block…do you stitch everyday? If so tell, me…your daily schedule…if not…tell why NOT??? in the comment section for today…Remember, to HOLD if your holding and I have to slow down a little and enjoy this all…you do the same today!
…and to clear up the questions about the Lakehouse…We held Luke and Brooke’s wedding on August 22 this last summer….
the next day we emptied the house…on Monday Habitat for Humanity striped the house, as we donated the house to them…The next day it was down and hauled away, there is no part of the house remaining, full tear down..that is why we had to move back from the lake to 58 1/2″ at the closest. New construction is now 75 feet away…but because we were 30ft, they took an average and came up with the 58 1/2 feet…the boathouse/guest house is still standing we will remodel that…no more turd brown house with turd brown trim.…
We have ordered new souvenir rulers with Primitive Gatherings on them for shows and again for you to give as gifts to your stitching buddies…We quilters love to share our finds and I believe we just love to “give”. It makes us feel good when we give a handmade quilt to someone special. It also makes us feel good to give everyone a little something who is going to retreat with us or coming to our house to stitch. A lot of this years needful things would be fitting as well as affordable for this kind of giving. This is a great deal at $6.98 each…PG SOUVENIR RULER
One of the things that really bothered me this year was the rulers my students were using in class. Now I’m not trying to “pick” on anyone here, but just need to make a point. If you are using some of the rulers you bought 20 years ago when you first starting quilting you may want to replace them…I used someones that I could barely see the numbers…I had some that had these thick ridges for marking lines, I swear they were 1/8″ thick and so on, several classes in several places I had a difficult time using their rulers….
Now here’s the main point. You can prepare your fabrics with starch and pre-shrink and stiffen them…you can stitch with the correct weight and best thread out there, you can have the perfect scant 1/4″ seam allowance, BUT if you cannot cut accurately it’s all a BUST! Make it easier on yourself to cut, its much more enjoyable with an easy to read ruler with fine or dashed lines to see your fabric when cutting…
I am putting all of our Creative Grid rulers on sale for 25% off. I believe they are the best rulers out there and (can only be purchased at quilt shops)with the no slip grip built in! So visit this area of our site and see all the rulers and descriptions RULERS… you can order any size or tool ruler we carry…My favorite sizes are 8 1/2″x 24 1/2″—-20 1/2″x 20 1/2″square—-6 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ and then 3 1/2″ x 12 1/2″and of course my PG 3×7 and 6×6 itty bitty eights which feature 1/8″ markings. If you want to learn more about the Itty Bitty’s click HERE…so here is your chance to get a second set or replace some of those older rulers… I also think the 6 1/2″, 9 1/2″ and 12 1/2″squares are all must haves too, I hate it when I’m at the lakehouse and I needed a 9 1/2″ ruler to square up my appliqué blocks and they were at home, so I’m making sure I have everything I need in all my stitching spots!!! All rulers except the souvenir one will be show up 25% off in your cart…The souvenir is always at an amazing price because we want you all to have one!
By now you should all know the drill about commenting and holding and whatever, I can’t wait to see who all the winners are!!! Comment and tell me today if you are all done with you holiday prep or are you still buying? or what all has to be done yet!!!
I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am doing it for you, I love reading all your comments!…It will be football and hand stitching day today…I frosted half my cookies last night and will do the rest today…Nick stinks at frosting cookies!!! So he was no help…
This was the update yesterday at the house…The lakehouse sits at the end of a private road…that grey garage behind the red trailer is ours too. We purchased the lakehouse in 2012 and have had wonderful times here with family and friends, but now its time to live here full-time …we have a irregular huge lot, that has lake frontage and channel frontage, its like a huge L …so to the left of the house is the lake…straight ahead is the channel and the lake on the other side of that too.. You can see that the lake is just now starting to freeze…it was windy and cold so I didn’t go around to take a pic of the channel view..later…but here is what happened yesterday… Most of you will “like” this…it is a small office in back of the kitchen, it goes to the mudroom and on to the doggie room…yes…Presley and Jeter will have their own room…and their OWN couches!!! Our house was custom designed to be exactly 58 1/2 feet away from the lake at every point. We were about 30 feet from the lake at the closest point before and now we have used every possible sq.foot and still be in compliance. Every one of those corners are the farthest we could go…I’ll post the back views at a different time.. but some you asked for the lay of the land…lol…Oh…I almost forgot the best part…above the garage is my sewing studio!!! Take care..
Thank you all for the kind words yesterday…I appreciate the fact that you all appreciate how hard I really work…I know I have sometimes been accused of working too much, but when you have 40+ persons relying on you for their income, its a lot of pressure…The good thing is..is that I LOVE what I do, so it’s easy for me. There were no snarky remarks yesterday so hopefully they got the hint, with your help no doubt…so I will post more about the Lakehouse….
Now back to the fabric boards…You are really going to LOVE/need this product or you will not. If you have a COLLECTION of fabric, (you never say stash by the way…) these are for you. I have used these boards for years to display my fabrics for easier accessibility, but when I ran out and reordered them the company that sold them never filled my order…I need black and it was a special order…I mean I ordered 500, just like my first order, so I don’t know why if wasn’t filled but after about 9 months of waiting…I decided we will make our own. (as you can see I did not take the time to make it look perfect on the shelves, I don’t have that obsession, so showing you them this way is just fine with me…we use these fabrics… it’s not just for show, so they are forever being picked and pulled on and off the shelves.) So that’s the back story on why we are selling fabric boards. They do not have the tabs to hold the fabric, because I didn’t use them, they made big bumps in the roll and they weren’t necessary, so why put them in our boards. They also fit better on the shelves without the tabs being used. Our boards are only half the price of the company I was buying them from. They come in black or white, and black is not a special order from us…we do not discriminate here. We see the need for both colors…If you have a special request like blue…we probably could do that too and it wouldn’t take nine months…I really, really try to support other companies and form relationships with them, but sometimes they make it impossible.
I would say you can roll from 3/4 yd to a whole bolt on these boards. When you come home from the quilt store you would fold your fabric in half, to about 11″ and then roll it on the board. (this is taking in account that your fabric is already folded from when it was cut from the bolt) We fold and and then pin the end…just like in the quilt store!!! I even label my boards with their fabric numbers. The boards are $30 for 24 of them. But for this special they will be $24 for 24 so $1 each. You order in multiples of 24. So if you order 3 in the cart you will be getting 72 boards. FABRIC BOARDS
If you didn’t notice a lot of the items this year have to do with organization. I am starting to go through and organize and purge almost 20 years of stuff in my sewing studio at our Menasha home ( there will be some give-aways, good for you…and me)…I strongly believe in spending $$$ on things to help organize…we feel better when things aren’t a mess, when we can see what we are looking for or know exactly where they should be…saves time and sanity!!!
Today’s a short post….lots to do..only 6 days til Christmas.
Please remember to leave a comment( if you are running out of things to say… tell me how long you have been quilting and why you started)…remember to add HOLD to your order comment section if you want it held!
House pic of the day…made it before dark yesterday and was greeting with this amazing site..my kitchen & living room hardwood floor is A-mazing!!! I show a better close up when I’m not getting in their way.
Remember to have a good day…I believe it 90% up to us to decide whether we are going to have good day or not!!! LB
There are always little sewing notions being developed or re colored so here are the NEW items we found this year that we think are worth having…
Super Shears Minis…These little cute scissors are adorable as well as sharp and very functional. I would consider these great for stitching, on the road and not risking bringing your “good” scissors, when you need a thread snipper. I wouldn’t want to cut out my wool shapes with them. They also make cute little gift for stitching friends and when you need little trinkets for a quilting get together…when the MODA girls came to the retreat house…they introduced these to me.
Here is the official description…Super Shears Mini. Miniature sized scissors that are fun & safe. The highest quality, sharpest little shears you will ever own. Cuts nails, cardboard, woven labels, cords & elastic. Comes with a protective sheath attachmnent which won’t get lost. I’m thinking the nails are finger nails….and thread..how about thread? that’s all I want to cut with them!!! So maybe this is the scissors you should throw in the junk drawer, so they(loved ones) don’t hunt down your good scissors…or when you have to cut those plastic thingys off of everything made now days…this can do it!!!
We are selling these in a set of three (yes, we think you need three)…as shown.. They are normally $2.79 each…now just $6.oo for the set. Super Shears
Let me tell you I LOVE this ripper…and that rubber end to pull out the loose ripped threads…AMAZING…of coarse mine doesn’t get much use as I rarely make mistakes! LOL…I hope you don’t believe that? You would think that the more years we’ve been stitching the less mistakes you would make? right? That be a No…Don’t think you are the only one who sews the wrong sides together, or messes up a block and only after you done the final press do you notice you turned something…right at the beginning??? We ALL do it…what you need to do especially when stitching with others is not make such a big deal out of it when you do something “stupid” then no one notices… The deal on the ripper reg. $6.79 is $5.44 or 2 for $10…I need at least 2 of them in each of my sewing spaces because…I’ts never where it should be!!! We will pick you a random colors, because they come in a box of like 6 of each color or something like that…if you ALL want purple what are we to do???? see our delima? So it will be a surprise which color you get!!! Order your RIPPER here. I just noticed Judi has the old pic of the rippers on the site… you will get the new colors…
Again…remember to place HOLD in the COMMENT section of your ORDER…please try not to put it in the comment section of the blog…I have to send them to the shop and I don’t want one to get missed. We need it on the order itself to make sure they are processed correctly…I know some of you are new to 12 days…and I want to make sure you are happy with our promotion.
and… Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for ordering everyday so we can get the correct numbers ordered ahead of shipping day…Jake appreciates it too as he can work on pin bowls now instead of between Christmas and New Years…
I don’t have much to share today so I’ll say a little about our house we are building…I see some of you are asking about it…First…the house will not be like my Menasha house (which we will be selling in Spring/Summer) which is warm and cozy…We will be going lighter, airier and a bit more modern…but we will still have lots of vintage and reclaimed/primitive accents…But my whole color scheme will change from reds, browns and blacks to blues, greys, white/creams, and old yellow…..think Lakeside Gatherings fabrics!!!
We are in several different stages…The wall painting just has finished up and the tile floors are starting to go in (which is super exciting than just seeing sticks and stones) as well as the reclaimed wood floor in our kitchen will be delivered today…I fought hard for a real beat up looking floor…everyone is afraid your going to call them back and say…my floor has big gaps in it..or whatever…I want that…I want my dogs to be able to scratch it up and it not be a OOOHHH NOOO…so I promised my wood floor guy he would not be hearing me complain about anything!!! There will be nothing shiny or sparkly in this house…no chandeliers or crystals things…just not my style…there will be signs that a quilter lives in it…herringbone and hex tiles…I’m making the quilted patchwork fabric to cover my window bench in the dining room…
The outside still does not have the siding up! The company who was hired I guess the main foremen quit and went on their own…now the owner is sitting with no experienced guy to run the crew…so we are waiting for a different company to fit us in their schedule…bummer cause it was sooooo nice here…now our siding guys will have to work in the snow and cold probably…and NO we do not have any snow yet…
Every night when Nick and I go out it is dark, its hard to see what the colors of paint are on the walls. So today I may sneak out of work early and go…I need to run around and pay some people $$$, for rugs and wall tiles, and extra cool knobs in some places that aren’t in the budget!! I’m beginning to dislike the word budget….When you build a sewing studio, the builder does not alway figure in the “budget” what you really want. I don’t even want to tell you how much my sewing studio put us over on our cabinet budget! But no one can even deny me what I want in that room…because we all know why!!!! I was watching some HGTV last night before bed and they were flipping kitchens for $8,000?…in CA?…now no way is that even close to what we pay here in WI for some of that stuff!!!They would flip a whole house for $40,000, so I was kinda laughing at the whole thing…here is what we saw last night…the master bath tile floor.
I somehow feel the need to share a few things that maybe you don’t know about Nick and I…we help many family and friends out…we live well below our means…We came from working class families where both parents worked very hard. Our parents knew each other back in the day…Our Dads both drove stock cars…I think my Dad won more races though…lol…sorry Nick…We met while working 12 hour swing shift in a paper mill, we both have been working since age 14 both at supper clubs washing dishes. We are both from small town which are next to each other…so we are alike…Please, I ask.. if it offends you that I am building a new house…please keep your comments to yourself…Most of you are happy for our success and want to know about the house and I’m happy to share some things with you but when you put yourself and your personal life out there, there are some who feel the need to crash your party with some ugly comments. I am writing about the Lakehouse because all of you who follow me know it is special to me…You know about the ANCHOR…you know why I need to be there all the time…so hopefully by reading this those of you who are NEW know that we are not a bunch of spoiled brats who’ve been handed everything…When we were shopping around for a builder one of them blew me off at more than one parade of homes event. I’m sure because by looking at me in my jeans and sweatshirt he didn’t think I could afford him. I can’t wait to only have to take care of 1 house instead of 2, and Nick will be able to fish everyday, like I get to stitch everyday!!! It is our time to build our forever home.
I have to admit to you that I usually am working on a couple of post ahead of when they post…this is not the case right now…With all the rain we have had some water issues along with some meetings for the new house has put me back a bit…but I’ll catch up today…So I am actually writing this post today!
I am featuring this needful thing AGAIN this year because I think it is extremely needful…I know there are tons of fusible webs out there…but I think this one is the best for WOOL appliqué. For several reason…Now that they have finally figured out all the glitches it works perfectly now…The following is a step by step directions on how to use SAS2Lite…
Trace your design on the side that has the 1″ grid…-(FYI the 24″ wide now comes with a yellow grid that is not so “there” the yellow is more subtle, which I really like.)
Remove the backing paper and place your shape on the wool. Iron using lots of HEAT…you cannot over heat the SAS2Lite, and keeping the iron moving over the wool.
Cut out your shapes using a nice fine scissors…cut away the traced line as wool is fluffier than normal cotton. So the shapes grow a little. This is why I cut 3/16″ stems- when they are stitched they are a 1/4″…if i would cut 1/4″ they would look bigger than a 1/4″, like 3/8″after being stitched and sometimes this is too big. I notice this on peoples blocks that their stems are a lot chubbier than mine…again…they look at the diagram and cut 1/4″ and do not read those directions I painstakingly wrote for them and have them cut 3/16″. LOL…
Remove the paper from the back of the shape and place it on your background.
Iron with tons of heat and steam…lots of presses up and down always keeping the iron moving at all time…the steam should be giving you a facial on the side.
Once it all looks good…flip it over and steam the back side too…up and down presses, lots of steam and heat…-no worries you will not wreck the fusible with too much
Now it’s time to stitch…
I sometimes hear that stitcher’s do not care for the SAS2Lite because it gives you a gummy needle…I do not have this problem…If you do you are not steaming enough..I will help remedy this problem later…The SAS2 loves steam and heat and I say this all the time in my classes that Wool and Steam are best friends…You will not have lifting or losing parts on your project…there are no pins, glues or any thing to get in your way of stitching or messing on your beautiful wools…your appliqués are clean and neat because of the fusible web, not all fuzzy and unmanageable….When you are laying out your wool the SAS2 has a tacky back that allows you to layout a whole big block and then tweak until it perfect and then steam it all down at once…I do not like slipy slidy appliqués they are too hard to manage. So that is the story of SAS2 Lite…Please try it…you will never go back to the others.
We have ordered a ton of the sheets of the SAS2LITE so you can stock up or try it for the first time…This pack reg. $5 is on special for $4.00…BUT if you order more than 1 we will give you $25% off…so they will go down to $3.75 a package STEAM-A-SEAM2 …the cart will figure your discounts usual…and remember to HOLD if thats what you doing…we truly appreciate the HOLD as this allows us to order ahead or for Jake to make ahead, if you wait until after the event to order all at once…it will take a bit longer, it you don’t care thats fine..
So with that said…here is a peek at what If am working on ..It is ODD that I would be working on something “in season”…I have a new line of MODA fabric called Christmas Gatherings coming out in MAY 2016…So I thought we would do a book to go along with the line of Moda fabrics.
I have yet to do a book in conjunction with a fabric line so this is a first…but I want the book to be all what I do and not just fabric quilts…so the book will have cotton and wool projects..lots of them.
Here is a peek at what is currently in progress at our studio and how we go about writing and self publishing our books…This book will be made completely in house here at Primitive Gatherings…A big part of what I do is write directions…here is how this happens… I bring Teri my ideas/rough schetches…she create the quilts digitally with the fabric sku’s…I figure out yardages for all the cotton quilts…these two things go to the MODA marketing crew to prepare sell sheets for the fabric reps to help promote the fabric sales….Then I take the yardages I have figured out and write the directions for the quilts.
When my sample yardage comes Amy cuts and starches all the fabrics. Teri- our graphic designer…gets the first draft copy done and we proceed to cut the quilts, so we are working from the book right from the start and can ward off any nasty boo boos…which would devastate us.
These appliqué projects have been prepped with SAS2LITE and are waiting to be stitched by me…Amy is piecing the Flying Geese for my Christmas Rose..these big appliqué blocks…I am piecing Boxes of Candy… Jean is currently binding All wrapped up…after it came off my quilting machine…So we have one quilt done!!! If you like what you see going on here you can pre order out next book CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS BOOK
I will give you a tour on one of these posts…of the whole Primitive Gatherings. Have a great day…and Day 8 means we only have 8 more days to complete all what we need to get done…I better get going!!! LB
REMEMBER to leave a comment to WIN some SAS2Lite!!!
These little cases have changed my mind about Jelly Rolls…I love having a little bit of every fabric of a line of fabric…and precuts enable this to happen…Jelly Rolls are awesome for strip quilts, mini quilts and you can make a lot of regular size blocks out of a jelly roll…When I get a precut I starch it until its totally wet and then hang them to dry…and do you know what? It does not shrink width wise…it does a little on the length but not the width..so NOW I want to sew with Jelly rolls..I have made this quilt, LOST MITTENS earlier this year…It was made from two jelly rolls and everything has a 2 1/2″ width except the last logs…I plan on making a bunch of quilts like this with different motifs on them…
I’m will be doing a table runner out of this Lakeside Gatherings Jelly roll next its all starched and ready to sew when I am ready it is safe in its fabric box! We have purchased a bunch of Lakeside Jelly rolls from Moda at special price and we can sell them to you for only $28.oo they are reg $39.99, so that is a nice discount, If you want to order the Lakeside Jelly roll for $28 click here JELLY ROLL…it is also shown in the strip box above.
See how I get sidetracked, this happens a lot to me lately… Back to the strip box… I love how the fuzz that precuts make are contained in this case and not all over my studio or on my shirt! I also think it would be great to store 2 1/2″ squares too so not only strips…You can order 1 strip case at 20% off, for $11.20 reg.$14…but I know you have more than 1 jellyroll!!! So 2 are $21 and three are 31.50…I know some of you have more than three but I’m not going to push it…You can do that on your own!!! Click here to order STRIP CASE. The 11.99 price will show up in your shopping cart…and remember to HOLD in comments if you want us to ship at the end…I remind you because if your like me I always forget to put the savings codes in when I order online…and please leave a comment up by clicking up at the top of this post if you want win a strip case!
I so love reading your comments everyday…I find out lots of things about you…and that is important to me. Lots of you have loved ones not able to come home or that are serving and they are coming home!… I have a nephew Tyler stationed at Fort Hood and he is coming home!… but then I also have a son Lance in Heaven who is never coming home again, so we all have people we love who cannot be with us…that is why we have each other and our stitching passion.
I also find out things like the Day 10 Valdani Books suddenly disappeared from the website at about 2am this morning??? They are back on now so if you didn’t get to place your order you can now.
Just a note about DAY 11-pinbowls..
Here is a message I got regarding the magnetic pin bowls…
I was just reading your blog this morning about your sew cute magnetic bowls. You were warning people to keep them away from computerized machines. I think that is a thing of the past, at least it is for Viking. My Viking Designer Diamond machine came out in 2008 & Viking says it would have to be a magnet to lift up a Volkswagen before it might hurt the machine! Lol I suggest you tell people to check with their machines manufacturer. This might help you to sell more bowls if people knew it was safe, 🙂 LOVE your patterns & your blog!
Karen in Ohio
Jake is super excited to be making lots of pin bowls!!! he sent me this pic to post for you!
Last..I know this is a long post…sorry..I want to sign off and share some of the hand made ornies on my tree…most were made by me from as far back as high school….some from customers/friends…and the paper coiled tree Lance made in grade school…
